Liberty v the Fatal Cycle of Democracy
The Path from Freedom to Bondage
"Honor, justice, and humanity, forbid us tamely to surrender that freedom which we received from our gallant ancestors, and which our innocent posterity have a right to receive from us. We cannot endure the infamy and guilt of resigning succeeding generations to that wretchedness which inevitably awaits them if we basely entail hereditary bondage on them." --Thomas Jefferson

December 15th marks the anniversary of the 1791 ratification of the Bill of Rights, the common name for the first 10 amendments to our Constitution. The purpose of the Bill was, and remains, to assert the enumeration of limitations on the national government in order to protect our natural rights to Liberty and property as "endowed by our Creator."
There was much debate among our Founders about the need to enumerate rights that are inherently endowed, especially as amendments rather than in the corpus of our Constitution. Alexander Hamilton argued this point in Federalist No. 84: "I ... affirm that bills of rights ... are not only unnecessary in the proposed Constitution, but would even be dangerous. ... For why declare that things shall not be done which there is no power to do?"
But a majority of our Founders, led by James Madison and George Mason, prevailed, and the state legislatures concurred with the addition of enumerated limitations on the central government, as outlined by the Bill of Rights Preamble: "The Conventions of a number of the States having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added..."
Thus, it is a fitting day to pause and take account of the principles of Essential Liberty embodied in our Constitution, the sustenance for which generations of Patriots have expended much treasure, blood and life.
As a vigilant student of American history, I can't state too emphatically that we are at a tipping point between Liberty and tyranny. I also argue that this juncture is like no other since the Tenth Amendment challenge that was waged and lost in the War Between the States.
For those who choose to read such words as hyperbole, Samuel Adams said it best: "If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands, which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."
But it is the inherent nature of genuine Patriots to stand ever ready to defend Liberty, convicted that, in the words of George Washington, "Our cause is noble; it is the cause of mankind."
It is in that spirit that I offer this observation about this precarious position we now inhabit between freedom and bondage.
Do you believe our nation is at a critical juncture? Post your opinion.
To fully understand the state of our Republic, one must consider it in the context of history to avoid repetition. As 20th-century philosopher George Santayana concluded in his treatise, "The Life of Reason": "Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
In 1764, as historian Edward Gibbon "sat musing amidst the ruins" of Rome, he was inspired to write about the failure of republics. The original text of his seminal work, "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," was published in 1776, as our Patriot ancestors were declaring our natural right to Liberty. Gibbon outlined in detail how opulence and entitlement led to the incremental loss of civic virtue.
The 18th/19th century Scotsman Alexander Fraser Tytler, a lawyer and professor of history, summarized this link as follows: "[Patriotism], like all other affections and passions, it operates with the greatest force where it meets with the greatest difficulties ... but in a state of ease and safety, as if wanting its appropriate nourishment, it languishes and decays. ... It is a law of nature to which no experience has ever furnished an exception, that the rising grandeur and opulence of a nation must be balanced by the decline of its heroic virtues."
Tytler's assertion about the relationship between opulence and decadence reflected his astute understanding of human nature.
This contiguous rise and decline has been characterized as a fatal "Cycle of Democracy" (often misattributed to Tytler as its source). The cycle follows this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to Liberty (Rule of Law); From Liberty to abundance; From abundance to complacency; From complacency to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage (rule of men).
So, at what stage of this rise and decline do we now find ourselves? In his recent book, "After America," Mark Steyn gives us a clue.
With their average 8th grade education, the Greatest Generation built the strongest and most innovative economy in history. However, "In the space of one generation," writes Steyn, "a nation of savers became the world's largest debtors, and a nation of makers and doers became a cheap service economy." Indeed, our country now hosts the most over-educated and under-productive generation in history, and has institutionalized a social subculture demanding government subsidies to compensate for their lack of initiative.
"Big government makes small citizens," Steyn concludes. "A great power can survive a lot of things, but not a mediocrity of spirit. A wealthy nation living on the accumulated cultural capital of a glorious past can dodge its rendezvous with fate, but only for so long."
It is my observation that since WWII, we have transitioned from abundance to complacency, from complacency to apathy and from apathy to dependence.
At what stage of the cycle of democracy is our nation, and why? Post your opinion.
The rise of populist Socialism spawned by Barack Hussein Obama and his Leftist cadres, has resulted in a surge of dependence upon the state.
The manifestation of this dependence spilled onto the streets this year in the form of the "Occupy Movement."
In fact, Time Magazine, that erstwhile advocate of statism, just named its 2011 Person of the Year, "The Protester." Its cover story category, "Prelude to the Revolutions," lists in order of significance, first Tunisians protesting dictatorial tyranny, second Egyptians protesting dictatorial tyranny, and third, "Occupy Wall Street and its millions of supporters." (To be fair, a few paragraphs later Time did richly understate, "The stakes are very different in different places. In North America and most of Europe, there are no dictators, and dissidents don't get tortured.")
As for the gap between dependence and bondage, philosopher and author of "Atlas Shrugged," Ayn Rand, wrote, "The difference between a welfare state and a totalitarian state is a matter of time."
The most pressing question now is this: Are we irrevocably locked into the Cycle of Democracy where totalitarian rule of men is inevitable, or is there still time to restore republican Rule of Law?
The answer, I believe, is no and yes, respectively. But time is short.
The prospect for restoring Liberty as enshrined in our Constitution continues to improve as the number of Americans joining the debate over the proper role of government authorized by our Constitution grows strong. There is a resurgence of Patriotism underway, and together we can sustain the sunrise on Liberty.
We can and must circumvent the Cycle of Democracy to avoid the terminus of Democratic Socialism which is bondage. Together, we can maintain the momentum of our mission and charge. Thank you Patriots for locking and loading on the frontlines of Liberty.

Why don't we, patriots all, march on Washington D.C. and THROW THE BUMS OUT? What are we waiting for? Do we really think the situation will solve itself? For all the downside, OWS did start with the right idea, they just went after those who profited by what's going on, not those who caused the situation in the first place. And then, of course, they proceeded to make fools of themselves by voiding in public, raping each other, robbing each other, and the biggie, refusing to share their free food with the truly destitute. They became that which they despise. Which begs the question: if we march on D.C., and force the bums to listen to the voice of the people, how do we get them to continue after we leave? Do we hold a gun to their head til the end of time? How then, are we any better than any other totalitarinist?

I believe we are at a cross road in maintaining our constitutional republic form of government. As the noted French political philosopher, De Montesquieu (1689-1755)said: "The deterioration of every government begins with the decay of the principles on which it was founded." This nation was founded on the Judeao Christian principle and through the actions of the courts and the left we are seeing it being eroded in the name of progressiveism.

Unless Freedom-Loving Patriots stand up, this leftist/socialist government led by BO, will destroy free speech, the right to vote freely without outside foreign infiltration, or inside (DOJ/Black Panther, etc.) coercion, the right to have one's own property, the right to be free from oppressive and excessive search and seizure, the right to arm ones' self and protect ones' self and property from those who would lay illegal claim on either. I am deeply concerned that the tipping point has been reached, and the once Brightly Lit American Republic, will dim, to the point of meaninglessness. WE MUST STAND UP AND BE COUNTED! As Benjamin Franklin once said, "We must hang together or we shall all HANG separately..."

It really scares me sometimes to see what is presently happening in this country. With the Occupy groups do what they are doing, and our present government not doing anything about it is very worrysome to me. It leads one to believe that the present government invites the protest group. It almost looks like some of the things that went on before the Russian revolution and also as Hitler took power in Germany. There are suttle differences, but the results could be the same!

I, too, believe we stand at the precipice-four more years of Barack Obama will spell the end of liberties and freedoms as we know them-from our right to bear arms to numerous other rights and liberties. The scariest thought is the fact that we have become such a hand-out society that if 50%, + or -, of the population pays no federal income tax, and a good portion of this population will, without so much as a thought, vote Obama back into office so they can stay on the gravy train.

What stage? you ask. Probably at the cusp of rapid decline and the advent of a tyranny unseen in this country since its beginning. The Democrats are acting to divide the nation and bring it into anarchistic class warfare, particularly the president, who is probably the most un-presidential of any man who has served in that office. The people seem to only want to be entertained [FaceBook, texting, IPods, IPads, reality shows, all pablum for the masses], rather than focus on issues relating to good government, preservation of private enterprise and maintenance of common sense. Rather a ward of the state, than an individual with freedoms that make a man whole. Rather the state control every aspect of one's life, than one controlling his or her individual life. The idea of patriotism has fallen short and nearly does not exist. Greed, envy and the desire to only keep in one's "space" are dominant traits. Understanding of geography and history is at a low point. The meaning of life as an individual steeped in knowledge of America both historically and as a united people is foreign and distant to most folks. Only when this is lost will the general population finally realize what it had. Or, maybe it will not.

Yes, we are at that juncture. We are a bunch of lemmings, marching aimlessly in lock-step with the wishes of a corrupt government. Government used to be the Sheep Dog, watching over the Flock to keep the Wolves at bay; not to dictate, but to serve and protect. Now the Wolves are watching over us, and the Sheep Dog is complacent and self-serving. Are we at the juncture? One contributor has said that we may be past that point. Only God knows whether that is true or not. He is my Shepherd, and our destiny is in His hands.

Mark, thanks for an excellent essay. I must take issue though with the suggestion that we are at a "tipping point". In fact we're way past that.I began my involvement with the Tea Party movement studying history and government which led directly to discovering the amazing links between government and the banks. I know now that the reign of fiat currencies around the world is nearing its end. The global bankers will keep the game going as long as possible at any cost while the populations who are dependent on "entitlements" will not give them up peacefully. Likely, it matters little whom we elect next November because the global financial house of cards is in the process of collapsing even now. And there is not one individual running for office who dares speak the truth about what it will take to avoid the coming calamity. And Ron Paul isn't even close though he may be the most honest voice in the fieldBuckle your chin strap Marine 'cause this is going to get ugly.

The problems we face have their root in the sinfulness of each and every human heart. JEREMIAH 17:9 states "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" but ROMANS 6:23 gives us hope, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." National Revival will also result in enduring political renewal.

Yes, I believe our liberties are rapidly going down the tubes. I say that because, among other reasons, I have a difficult time accepting the fact that any judge has the authority to deny a citizen of this nation any of their civil/constitutional rights. I base that upon a condition where one Federal Court Judge James Whale in the Spokane, WA federal court ordered all of the other federal judges in the state of Washington to disallow me to file any lawsuits in this state. I suppose part of his reasoning is because I had to do it as a pro se plaintiff because the local bar associations have informed the attorney's I hired to "back off from representing this issue in court, or face the loss of your license to practice law."

Yes, America is at a critical juncture. Shadowy international forces of long standing have conspired to create a world government which will eliminate our liberty and sovereignty, both individual and national. It is commonly known as the New World Order. Now, a world government has much to recommend itself. I would be delighted if national borders were someday eliminated so that I didn’t have to go through Customs when traveling. I would be delighted if I didn’t have to exchange currencies because there was a unified monetary system for the planet. I would be delighted if I didn’t have to go through the postal system’s rates and fees when mailing outside the U.S. And I would be profoundly grateful if the world didn’t waste trillions of dollars on armies and military might, so that wars between nations and ethnic groups and religious groups were a thing of the past, and differences between belligerent groups were settled peacefully, rationally and justly in a forum such as the United Nations or a World Court. All that is part of the age-old global dream of peace and prosperity and true community/brotherhood on Earth. So why am I against the New World Order? Because it is a scam. Because it is a counterfeit—a total prostitution of that age-old dream. Because it is a deliberate but covert and stealthy attempt to impose an ideology called socialism, a bankrupt philosophy which has failed everywhere because the centralized power it requires inevitably leads to tyranny. Moreover, any element of high-mindedness on the part of the principals involved is secondary to their primary motivation, which is to remake the world in their own image. That motivation is the hallmark of Satan, of arrogant self-centeredness and inflated egotism which leads directly to totalitarianism, collectivism and the abrogation of every civil liberty and human right which humanity, with America at the vanguard, has worked and fought and died for over centuries. The result of the New World Order will be political, economic and social slavery—period. Note that the hallmark of the New World Order is essentially a rejection of God and His plan for human salvation via enlightened living—that is, living in accordance with the ideals, principles and values which are the essence of the American Spirit. Heaven on earth results from living in a God-centered manner; hell on earth results from living in a self-centered manner. We have the free will to choose either. The architects of the New World Order have chosen the latter, and then delude themselves that they are doing good. Their model, although they are not really conscious of it, is Satan as depicted in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. There, Satan defies God and declares “Non serviam,” I will not serve. “I would rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven,” Satan says, and then sets about trying to remake the universe in his own image. That is precisely the mindset of the architects of the New World Order.Note also that the characteristics of the New World Order conspirators are secrecy, deception and lies. “By their fruits ye shall know them” says the Bible, and it is still the truest test of character and intent. Last of all, note that the people who make the best slaves are people who (1) are unaware they are slaves, (2) love their masters and (3) wear golden shackles in the form of government welfare and subsidies which chain them to the state, relieving them of the responsibility to think for themselves and to support themselves via honest labor. The “dumbing down of America” has placed mental and moral blinders of people while glamorizing politicians to make them attractive celebrities rather than genuine servants of the people. We the people of America are facing a clear choice about our future and the human future: Enslavement or enlightenment? Do we want a secret society or a sacred society—governance by a hidden satanic elite or an openly God-centered people? I am in favor of a true world community but not a New World Order. The United States of the World is the community I espouse. (From my forthcoming book America, Freedom and Enlightenment)

RE: Cary Garman above. He said it best. Now why are Conservative pushing it? Power corrupts and Conservatives are turning to communism Look at the communistic state of Mich. No Conservative post will comment on that one. Why? Conservative Congress no knock warrant. Congress under GOP passed a law saying they can without senate or president decline any law of the land. Indefinite detention w/o rights, another conservative Congress bill. I've always said, quit blaming the other side and look at yourself. The question isn't if we passed it, the question is why under the banner of Conversation did you allow it to happen? Look in the mirror. Just because FOX News says give up your rights, (Kelly, O'Reilly, Hannity)doesn't make it right. We pushed and now we have to pay the Piper. Why not comment on no judges, no police force, no sheriff, no elected officials and say its for your own good. Sounds Stalinish to me. Go live in Mich. Again, go look in the mirror.
