People with NPD, as you mentioned, are in desperate need of validation. They seek associations with people who will accept them, and those people are seldom the "in" crowd. They migrate to groups of minority opinions and adopt those opinions in order to be accepted.
Conservative groups tend to be far better at spotting people afflicted with NPD, even as early in life as grade school, and avoid welcoming NPD cases to the fold because they are aware of the problems that will be caused downline.
