Narcissism and Tyranny -- The Consequence of Executive Egocentrism

Self Service Masquerading as Public Service

By Mark Alexander · May 31, 2012
“He that falls in love with himself will have no rivals.” –Benjamin Franklin, 1758

Paraphrasing the ancient Chinese warrior Sun Tzu: To defeat your opponent you must know your opponent and know yourself.

If our generation of Patriots is to succeed in our mandate to extend the blessings of American Liberty to our posterity, then we must both know the depth of our devotion to Liberty and understand its enemies. Indeed, we must fully comprehend those adversaries beyond topical categorization by political and other affiliations.

Our nation was founded by Patriots who devoted their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to Liberty for all. They truly understood the nature of “public service” as opposed to “self service,” the former defined as the giving of oneself for the greater good as opposed to the latter defined as the taking for oneself to the detriment of anyone or anything else.

In our Republican context of governance, the spirit of public service was and remains essential for the advancement of Liberty, while the consequence of self-service has always been irrevocably linked to tyranny.

Our generation of Patriots understands this distinction, and we are steadfast in our fidelity to the higher calling of Liberty. However, this fraternity of dedicated Patriots has always been, and will likely always be, in the minority – which is to say we must each resolve to give our all. As often noted, Samuel Adams wrote, “It does not take a majority to prevail … but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.”

In the generations since our founding, Liberty has suffered excessive insult by the rise of men who, under the banner of “public service,” are motivated principally by self service – and the greater the drive toward self service, the greater the threat to Liberty.

Recent history records the ascension of politicians who were incontrovertibly motivated by self service masquerading as public service – Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Albert Gore, John Kerry and John Edwards, to name a few. All of these men share tragic family histories, which indelibly imprinted them from birth. Each also has a common diagnosis for his behavior: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).

Post Your Opinion: Why is NPD epidemic among Leftists?

Understanding this pathology is key to defeating our opponents who manifest it.

By definition, narcissists are deeply insecure and, consequently, have an unrelenting need to be admired by others. Their low self-esteem is often imprinted from early childhood, and for many it is associated with ineffective fathering or worse, parental abandonment. Narcissists have a grandiose sense of self and of entitlement, and they have an excessive dependence upon others for self-definition and self-esteem regulation. Though they may project an image of great confidence, it is nothing more than arrogance pretending to be confidence in a cover-up of their insecurity.

I certainly would not suggest that all children with tragic family histories are destined to develop NPD. But executive offices in both the private and public sector are frequently occupied by those driven by narcissistic pathology, those whose motivation to achieve is characterized by a lust for power and avarice, rooted in broken self esteem and the resulting obsessive need to be accepted by others.

The most malignant form of narcissism is accompanied by intelligence and charisma, which enables the deception of others in order to secure positions of power and influence.

No executive in American history has provided a more textbook archetypal case study of Narcissistic Personality Disorder than Barack Hussein Obama, who embodied the pathology of the Left and successfully deceived the masses with his intelligence and charisma. Notably, he unwittingly outlined this deception in his second autobiographical book, “The Audacity of Hope,” writing, “I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views.”

Like all narcissists, however, Obama’s life is a lie.

To confirm that assertion, one needs look no further than his official White House biography, which begins, “His story is the American story – values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family…” There is no doubt that Obama wanted, and indeed deserved, that upbringing, but to assert that he had it could not be further from the truth.

And to further confirm the audacity of Obama’s narcissism, we need only examine his adulteration of the official White House Historical Association biographies of prior presidents, where Obama has inserted his name and some related “achievement” into the historic narratives of presidents dating back to Calvin Coolidge.

For example, the “Did You Know?” section at the end of Coolidge’s bio has been altered to read, “On Feb. 22, 1924 Calvin Coolidge became the first president to make a public radio address to the American people. President Coolidge later helped create the Federal Radio Commission, which has now evolved to become the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). President Obama became the first president to hold virtual gatherings and town halls using Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, etc.”

See if you can spot the impostor in these other presidential bios:

“On August 14, 1935, President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. Today the Obama Administration continues to protect seniors and ensure Social Security will be there for future generations.”

“President John F. Kennedy famously suggested the American people: ‘Ask what you can do for your country.’ In 1961, the Peace Corps was created, facilitating service among citizens working toward peace in developing countries. In 2011, President Obama celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps with a Presidential Proclamation.”

“In 1973, Richard Nixon created The President’s Export Council, which was expanded and reconstituted under President Jimmy Carter in 1979. Today the PEC continues to work towards reaching President Obama’s goal of doubling the nation’s exports by 2014’s end.”

“President Reagan designated Martin Luther King Jr. Day a national holiday; today the Obama Administration honors this tradition, with the First and Second Families participating in service projects on this day. In a June 28, 1985 speech Reagan called for a fairer tax code, one where a multi-millionaire did not have a lower tax rate than his secretary. Today, President Obama is calling for the same with the Buffett Rule.”

“In 2002, President George W. Bush’s State of the Union was the first to be live broadcast on the Internet. In 2011 and 2012, President Obama’s State of the Union speeches were available in an enhanced live stream version that featured infographics, charts and data side-by-side in real time with the President’s speech.”

Of this audacious adulteration, Ronald Reagan’s former Attorney General, Ed Meese, concludes, “What they have done is to spoil the integrity of the historical narrative.”

Post Your Opinion: How can Romney challenge Obama’s NPD?

In advance of the 2012 election, Obama has framed his tenure in office as “public service.” But he is pathologically incapable of serving the public ahead of himself. In order to spoil the integrity of his narrative, we must fully understand his unmitigated narcissism and thoroughly expose the grave threat that his self-interest poses to Essential Liberty.

Have you ever noticed the symbol Obama uses? The big blue "O", with the red and white stripes down at the bottom of it. It looks to me like the American flag is falling to the ground in from of the Big "O" (Obama). That's what I see everytime it see that emblem - it matches everything he stands for and is the perfect symbol for what he is trying to do - bring down the Untied States "for good". All I can say is, "God help us if he wins another term" - that's if we do actually have another election, which I'm tending to think is not as certain as most people think. This guy is desperate and intends to use desperate measures to stay in the White House - even at the risk of something like a massive national uprising stirred up and fueled by him and his minions.

Romney needs to stay on point about jobs, the economy, doing away with the evil tool that the IRS has become and downsizing government by closing outdated and unnecessary offices.

He should not let the Democrats and the so called press side track him by dictating the policies addressed. He needs to stay on point that are at the heart of the survival of the USA. Feed Obama's own words back at him. Let Obama bury himself.

It is because that is all they have. They can't discuss facts because no facts justify their silly beliefs about government 'creating prosperity" and that the government can somehow borrow and spend its way into prosperity.
The main reason, however, is that they just can't be very smart to fall for the Leftist line, after watching every Socialist scheme in the last centuty fail so miserably. Making people dependent on governmant handouts may get votes but it can only ceate prosperity in the weak minds of Leftists.
It is very similar to "arrogance" in that only the insecure, weak, and phony people will ever be arrogant. The truly great people with good character are always humble, because they are smart enough to know how limited all human being are and they are much more likely to be grateful for their gifts and forgiving of other people's faults.

Why is NPD epidemic among Leftists? I think, essentially, this is a issue of the heart--of spirituality and worldview--regarding a person's belief about the source of his or her value as a person. Does a person determine his or her own self-bestowed worth? If so, they draw from a finite and imperfect well, and therefore, can never reach maximum potential. And they know this inherently in their hearts, even if they never acknowledge it as truth. If, on the other hand, a person believes their value derives from a Creator God who fashions them in His own image, then they understand their value is God-bestowed and is drawn from God's inexhaustible resources, making their value limitless, and it is empowering to accept this as truth.

The problem is that most Leftists have nullified the idea of God as Creator--or have negated the idea of His very existence!--and are thus left to their own pitiful abilities and woefully inadequate resources to try and validate their own self-worth. Hence, the reason narcissists are deeply insecure, suffer from low self-esteem, and desperately need the admiration of others. No Leftist will understand this, let alone admit it, though

Well said! Sandra, you expressed it so much better than I did. NPD is a spiritual sickness. "Those who oppose [the Lord's servant] he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentence leading to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will" (2 Timothy 2:25-26)

How can Romney challenge Obama's NPD? Good question with not much of the ability to be answered. Candidates from the left seem to have the problem with NPD regardless of party affiliation. With Romney running to prove he is a better man than his Father by hoping to become President, he obviously drinks the same left wing Kool Aid as obama. But then by being a liberal member of the republican party he is leftist in his own right and seems to be suffering from the same condition. The fact that we have only the choice of liberal "A" or liberal "B" shows how far down the tubes we have dropped . If Romney is the best we have to offer then America is doomed. If we had a section on the ballot labeled "None of the Above" we might never fill the office of the President.

Gary, I agree with you. I just voted in the Texas primary election this past Tuesday. My state has the dubious honor of putting Romney over the top regarding the number of delegates he need for the nomination. On my ballot, I selected "Uncommitted" as my vote for presidential nominee. I'm not going to vote for Romney until I have to, which I suppose will be in November ... if elections are held as scheduled.

How can Romney challenge Obama's NPD? How can one with NPD challenge another with NPD? The left seems afflicted no matter their party affiliation. With Romney running to prove he is a better man by becoming President coupled with the fact that he has No Core Values and will say anything to gain the objective of being President he seems to suffer the same NPD as obama. It is truely a sad day when the best we have to offer is a choice between these two front runners.

Equating Romney with Obamao is pure delusion. If you see them as equals, your vision should be checked, and maybe you are too uninformed to vote.

Sir, you really do need to do more research on NPD before making such a blanket statement. Mr. Romney shows none of the outward signs that are so blatant of those with NPD. Had the media not had such "tingling legs" during 2008 campaign, they would have/could have seen zero-man has ALL the classic NPD characteristics. It really doesn't take a psychologist/psychiatrist to recognize NPD.........just an alert observer.

Dealing with Obama is quite simple, don't get distracted over personal attacks, because it is a fact that Team Obama does not want to talk the lack of accomplishments and especially about the religion. I still can't understand some people and the Mormon faith of Romney, Without getting personal regarding Obama, just say, we have a decision to make do you feel more comfortable with a Mormon in the Oval Office or a President who gets daily.advice from the Muslim Brotherhood or the old standby, are you better off now than you were four years ago. Of course with the Obama constituency you are dealing with severely mental challenged people.

Some version of socialism or of interventionist tyranny is the natural philosophy of narcissists. They are extremely egocentric, thinking themselves irrational while anyone not like themselves is either too stupid or irrational to know what is good for themselves. Therefore the intelligent elite like themselves must run lesser people's lives. However, in a democracy, the elite must convince those they regard as lesser people that it is being done in the interest of the people. So the narcissists pretend to be serving the 'little guy'.
