Sustaining the war effort

· Friday, July 19, 2002

Sensing that the American people have grown simultaneously distracted and fatigued from our ongoing war against Jihadistan, the Leftists have opened a domestic political front they hope will taint President George Bush with charges of corporate corruption. So far, the attempts have not stuck, but....

Despite the recent stock market tumble, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan offered a carefully optimistic evaluation of the economy, noting "the fundamentals are in place for a return to sustained healthy growth." Greenspan echoed President Bush's evaluation of the market frenzy of the late 1990's as being largely smoke and mirrors spurred by greed: "An infectious greed seemed to grip much of our business community. Too many corporate executives sought ways to harvest some of these stock market gains. It's not that humans have become any more greedy. It is that the avenues to express greed had grown so enormously."

Greenspan agreed with President Bush's endorsement of congressional measures to strengthen penalties related to corporate fraud. But the Bush administration has strongly objected to congressional efforts to further regulate the "free market," including Sen. Paul Sarbanes' (D-MD) legislation to regulate accounting principles -- essentially creating a whole new area for trial lawyer exploitation.

The partisan-inspired attacks on the Bush-Cheney corporate honcho links have further distracted our countrymen at almost the precise moment requiring a renewal of our resolve to fight -- and defeat -- the Jihadis dead set on attacking us again. The congressional panel investigating events and decisions leading up to 9-11 released some conclusions about shortcomings that may have contributed to the failures and lapses. Investigators stated the obvious, a failure of intelligence at all the relevant agencies, but then lapsed, themselves, into a soft-pedaled statement that the attacks most likely could not have been prevented.

Hindsight being what it is, we concur with this assessment, but given FBI agent Colleen Rowley's recently testimony about how fears of being tagged for "racial profiling" kept the bureau from opening computer files of Zacarias Moussaoui -- which held clear pointers toward the impending attacks -- the PC police certainly facilitated the success of the 9-11 attack. Moussaoui admitted yesterday that he was a member of al-Qa'ida, saying, "I want to Have a plea of guilty, because this will ensure to save my life ... even if I plead guilty I will be able to prove I have certain knowledge of September 11. I know exactly who done it." Judge Leonie Brinkema stopped him, warning that any confessions could be used against him in future court actions.

In other al-Qa'ida plea news, John Walker Lindh confessed to aiding the terrorist Taliban and carrying weapons in those acts, which will earn him around 20 years in a federal prison. His father Frank Lindh, a homosexual who abandoned little Johnny as a child, commented: "I told John when he came back from Afghanistan, when I first met him, that Nelson Mandela served 26 years in prison. He's a good man, like John. ...[A]nyone who knew John, would be proud to have him as a son. He's a really good kid." He's a really good "traitor"!

Meanwhile, in another looming court front in the war against Jihadistan, anonymous plaintiffs linked to terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah are suing President Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell, to force them to bring Israeli leaders up on charges of "war crimes." (The suit also names U.S. arms manufacturers and religious groups for complicity.) Appearing to announce the lawsuit to "challenge the [U.S.] system" was Abdurahman Alamoudi, a founder and longtime leader of the American Muslim Council: "We've been doing it politically and now we're going to do it legally."

And recovery efforts sifting through 9-11 World Trade Center debris ended officially Monday. We again invite our readers to join us in prayers for both the family members of our murdered countrymen and the recovery workers who toiled over the wrenching task of returning the victims' earthly remains to their heart-broken families.
