The Senate passed the Ryan-Murray budget compromise 64-36, staving off yet another “crisis” before Christmas. Nine Republicans voted for the deal; three more switched to “no” votes after voting “yes” on cloture. Most Republicans voted “no” on the bill in order to say they opposed modifying the sequester, but in reality this deal benefits the GOP. As Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), who voted “no,” put it, “Republicans kind of look at this election as probably the best opportunity we’ve ever had at taking control” of the Senate. Indeed, that will be necessary to derail some of Obama’s agenda for his final two years in office, and in order to win that election, the GOP must focus on reminding voters what a disaster ObamaCare is – not budget fights that the minority party cannot yet win.
