Buried deep within a Washington Post report is this alarming statistic: “About one-quarter of people expected to qualify for premium subsidies, who earn between the federal poverty level and up to 400 percent FPL, don’t have bank accounts, according to Jackson Hewitt.” Remember, though the White House touts eight million enrollees, they won’t reveal how many have actually paid their first month’s premium. This is crucial, because that’s the number who are actually insured. Simply singing up through the exchange doesn’t count. And if the above statistic is any indication, an uncomfortable percentage of supposed enrollees don’t even have the ability to pay their premiums. CVS Caremark is trying to alleviate this problem by offering premium bill pay at its 7,600 locations.
