“Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 217,000 in May, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.3 percent,” the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Most of those jobs were low-wage positions. The fuller measure of unemployment, known as U-6, fell slightly to 12.2% – the lowest since October 2008. Yet in March 2007, the U-6 rate was 8%. At the current rate of job growth, it will take years to create the seven million jobs needed just to return to employment levels of seven years ago.
