Despite the gridlock on Capitol Hill, senators can agree on one thing: Taxes on gas must be raised. A bipartisan bill (yup, it’s been a while since we typed that phrase) seeks to raise the tax on gas by 12 cents a gallon to funnel more money into infrastructure upgrades. Sen. Chris Murphy, said, “For too long, Congress has shied away from taking serious action to update our country’s aging infrastructure. We’re currently facing a transportation crisis that will only get worse if we don’t take bold action to fund the Highway Trust Fund.” It’s been 20 years since the gas tax was raised. In an ideal world, the United States would have a clear tax law, perhaps using consumption taxes. But this law, combined with the web of other taxes, is just another burden from a tax-happy government. More…
