The suggestions for alternate words in the thesaurus are usually unhelpful. But when it comes to the word “obstructionist” at Thesaurus.com, the entries are downright uncalled for. Look up, and Rogets 21st Century Thesaurus spits out words like “right-winger,” “conserver,” “redneck” – even “moderate” and “middle-of-the-roader.” And aren’t the antonyms rosy, with “left-winger,” “progressive” and “liberal” suggested to mean the opposite of the word that means the “deliberate interference with the progress or business especially of a legislative body,” as defined by Merriam-Webster. Yes, by definition conservatism means a skepticism to the departure of the way things were. But it’s ridiculous to name everyone not on board the happy liberal party boat, bumping up the creek where you always lose your paddle, as obstructionist.
