Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan wrote to the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to ask to become a “citizen” of the caliphate. In 2009, Hasan killed 13 soldiers (and an unborn child) and injured 30 more at the Texas base. “I formally and humbly request to be made a citizen of the Islamic State,” Hasan wrote from death row. “It would be an honor for any believer to be an obedient citizen soldier to a people and its leader who don’t compromise the religion of All-Mighty Allah to get along with the disbelievers.” Can the Department of Defense stop calling Hasan’s actions “workplace violence”?
