This recovery is marked by high and tenacious unemployment. A study produced by Rutgers University found that 30 million workers were laid off during the last five years. That means since the Obama administration declared the recession over in 2009, one in five workers lost their job and had to search for another. And that search was not easy because 40% of those workers said it took them over seven months to find a new job. The study went on to say that unemployment took those people’s finances and relationships through the ringer. “While the unemployment rate for the short-term unemployed – people out of work for six months or less – has returned to pre-recession level,” the study said, “the levels of unemployment for workers who remain jobless for more than six months is among the most persistent, negative effects of the Great Recession.” Not exactly a desirable campaign theme for Democrats.
