The bloodshed perpetrated by Muslim extremists in Paris, France, renewed calls by Islamic sympathizers for universal deference and a plea for moderate Muslim leaders to denounce terrorism. So “why don’t moderate Muslims speak up?” That question is the thesis of a thought-provoking piece by American Enterprise Institute fellow Michael Rubin, who points out that many moderates have taken a stand against ruthless attacks only to find themselves behind bars. “Take the case of Ayatollah Kazemeini Boroujerdi,” writes Rubin. “Against the backdrop of growing Iranian government extremism, Boroujerdi called for a return to traditional Islam. The Iranian regime’s storm troopers responded by surrounding Boroujerdi’s house, overcoming his supporters, and dragging the religious leader off to Iran’s notorious Evin Prison.” That’s not to say Boroujerdi is the rule and not the exception. But the deafening response given by those who supposedly encourage rebellious behavior against the fallacious teachings of Sharia law to those who walk the talk demonstrates the Left’s bizarre philosophy – a philosophy geared not so much toward Liberty as appeasement.
