Both Republican Sen. Rand Paul and Democrat Martin O'Malley championed their approach to the nation’s criminal justice system to further their political aspirations. But then the Baltimore riot happened. Paul was going to reach out to black communities with his proposal to do something about the nation’s disproportionate incarceration rates. But then on the Laura Ingraham Show Tuesday, Paul showed repulsion to the constituents he was trying to reach. “I came through the train on Baltimore last night,” Paul said. “I’m glad the train didn’t stop.” If Paul’s campaign had thought it through, it would have used the unrest as a platform to further Paul’s libertarian and conservative solutions. As for O'Malley, the Democrat’s hand runs through and through the city’s politics. Politico writes it was his tough style of policing that originally destroyed the relationship between badge and citizen. He was the politician that mentored the city’s current mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Furthermore, O'Malley has been pointing to his time as Baltimore’s mayor as evidence of his leadership chops.
