During a down hall this week, Donald Trump admitted that, if he loses the nomination, he intends to break the loyalty pledge he made to the GOP and the eventual presidential nominee. “I have been treated very unfairly,” he said.

The South Carolina Republican Party used that as an opportunity to take a jab at the boorish Republican frontrunner, for the piece of paper Trump signed at the behest of GOP Chairman Reince Priebus wasn’t the only loyalty pledge the TV personality made. In order to get on the South Carolina ballot, Trump had to agree to stand by the eventual GOP nominee, win or lose.

On Feb. 1, South Carolina voters handed Trump 50 delegates after he won the Republican primary with 33% of the vote. But since he made his comments, does that mean the South Carolina GOP can strip those 50 delegates — which he needs to cinch the nomination — from Trump?

SC GOP Party Chair Matt Moore told TIME Magazine, “Breaking South Carolina’s presidential-primary-ballot pledge raises some unanswered legal questions that no one person can answer. However, a court or national convention Committee on Contests could resolve them. It could put delegates in jeopardy.”

Hot Air’s Allahpundit says a potential legal challenge raises even more questions. What if Trump makes one of his infamous flip-flops, saying he’s once again standing by his word?

Moore later downplayed the issue, writing in a Tweet Mar. 31, “Regarding delegate questions today: to be clear, no one is seeking to unbind ANY of South Carolina’s national delegates.” It seems the party only wanted to check its frontrunner, warning him about hijacking the party, because an already ugly primary season can become uglier.
