Chinese-American foreign relations are rocky. It is reported that President Xi Jinping and his officials despise working with Team Biden. But President Joe Biden isn’t taking “no” for an answer. He has sent diplomat after diplomat to China this summer in an attempt to open back up channels of communication.

How have the Chinese responded?

They have gone on the offensive. Just as Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) pointed out earlier this summer: “Biden administration officials should stop chasing after their Chinese communist counterparts like lovestruck teenagers. It’s embarrassing, and it’s pathetic. In fact, it projects weakness to China, it encourages them to do things like buzz our aircraft, or come within a few hundred yards of our ships, encourages them to send spy balloons floating all across America. Reducing those tariffs would send the same message.”

The Chinese have sent spy balloons and actual spies, and now cyberattacks have been made known to the public.

Starting in May, but undiscovered until mid June, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s emails were hacked by the Chinese. According to a Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency official: “The targeting was intentional. This was an attack that was limited in scope and was not an attempt to compromise a broad array of organizations or accounts, as we have seen in other types of campaigns.”

Raimondo is one of the few members of Team Biden who reportedly had a “good” relationship with her counterpart. However, the hacking didn’t stop with Raimondo.

The State Department also had two of its diplomats’ emails hacked. Those officials were Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia Daniel Kritenbrink. This was all done ahead of John Kerry’s fruitless visit to China to potentially convince the Chinese to become more “green” in their energy use. The emails that were hacked could have given the Chinese advanced warning of strategy to be employed for the talks.

Hacking emails isn’t the sort of “communication” President Biden and his team have been angling for. These are not the actions of a nation that is willing to play ball. These are the actions of a nation that is gearing up for conflict. China is gathering information on its enemy and attempting to undermine it at every turn. What else is the administration going to allow the Chinese to do?
