There are many parallels between today and 1776: taxes, regulations restricting trade, and arrogant representatives who do not represent our interests. They openly ignore them as they represent a new “standing army” of armed regulators. The list is long and goes on. Our constitutional guarantees and Bill of Rights have been and are being ignored. Worse, some are being denied.

Just as King George and parliament ignored us in the 18th Century, we have reverted to the denied freedoms of the colonial days. It’s time for the Sons of Liberty to rise again.

I have been writing columns for the Fairfield (CA) Daily Republic for more than 25 years, primarily about local matters and concerns of seniors. In my opinion pieces I have been emphasizing that it is our responsibility as individuals to make changes happen. Pack the City Council, County Supervisor an School Board meetings. Insist on the changes that will begin to restore our God given rights and responsibilities. At the school boards, for example, reaffirm that it is NOT the responsibility of the School Board, Administration or teachers to teach about sex ,and tacitly approve immoral behavior by issuing medications to prevent pregnancy. Nor is it their responsibility to authorize abortions without the knowledge or consent of parents. It is the parent’s responsibility. It is not the responsibility of the school to feed our children. That’s our responsibility, and, our right. Demand the schools get out of the business of sex education. They are teaching and approving sexual activity and deviancy, too. Insist they fulfill their responsibility for providing fundamental skills to our children. That is an absolute must. Make that the prime responsibility of the School Board. In many districts, board involvement in anything involving instruction has become a no-no. Require performance of the administration. If they do not perform, find new administrators. Find what works and use it. Use success based programs rather than esoteric “research ” based programs that do not work. Demand transparency. The point? If enough parents in enough places demand a return to parental responsibility and school performance, those changes will be made.

Our country is at a place in its life where history is repeating itself. The people who are supposed to represent us do not. They are ignoring us and representing themselves and King Barack instead. Many acts or failure to act are grounds for impeachment. But because we have partisan “establishment” legislators, who support the impeachable acts or failure to act, there is no possibility of impeachment. The legislature itself is failing to fulfill its responsibilities dictated by the Constitution. Open purses and continuing resolutions. We cannot expect them to support a return to original intent and the rule of law. They are a major part of our problem. Some states might support a restoration of our God given rights. But many of the state governments and bureaucracies are as corrupt as is the Federal system. What it boils down to is this. It is up to you and I to make governments change. It is up to us to bring about the restoration of our Republic. I should confess at this point that I am an old guy (84) who has no position to protect and have very little to lose. So it doesn’t take a lot of courage to call for a New Declaration of Independence. That’s what I’m doing. I am no John Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison, Jay or Franklin. But, I am assembling a list of offenses by Obama against the people and a bill of indictment against him and the legislature. While there are plenty of sources for those things, it is hard to sort out the facts from opinion. If anyone out there would like to help me, I would welcome it. I have no illusions about the new Declaration" being anything official. I do believe something like that well crafted and widely distributed might begin a movement among the people to restore our founding principles.

In the meantime, we should not abandon the vote. The same masses of citizens who fill meetings locally can do the same with congressmen and women. Intimidate them and make them feel threatened. Find good opposition candidates and vote the establishment out. These experiences can be both exciting and fun. The Central Solano Citizen/Taxpayer Group challenged the city on an illegal transfer of funds from a utility to the general fund. They did it creatively. Airplanes towed banners saying, “ H— No No on measure H.” And we won, saving the citizens about $2.5 million a year. It was great fun and a great bonding experience. Is that kind of fun and bonding possible on a national scale? Yes, I think so.

In 1776, 56 men pledged to each other “our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.” I wonder how many good men and women out there are willing to do the same today. I’m willing because I have little to lose. Only my life of which there is little remaining anyway. Right now I need the ideas of folks brighter than I am to create the document which will be the new Declaration of Independence. Any takers?
