Liberty and 'Collective Action'
The Foundation
"Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm." --James Madison
Editorial Exegesis
The Obama Inauguration"Monday's inaugural address included a big dollop of 'give capitalism its due.' But it was just a spoonful of sugar to help Americans swallow their collectivist medicine. ... According to this president, 'being true to our founding documents ... does not mean we all define liberty in exactly the same way.' ... This is what we are to have in mind as we swallow the 'ask not what your country' line of Obama's address: 'preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action.' In other words, there is no real liberty without big government. ... Americans, Obama said, possess 'an endless capacity for risk' and 'we have never relinquished our skepticism of central authority, nor have we succumbed to the fiction that all society's ills can be cured through government alone. Our celebration of initiative and enterprise, our insistence on hard work and personal responsibility -- these are constants in our character.' It's all terrific lip service to the principles of economic freedom. But it was followed by the declaration that 'we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future.' Translation: We can have our fiscal cake and eat it too. Forget $16.5 trillion in national debt. Forget trillion-dollar deficits. Forget government hyper-spending's toll on the private sector. ... [Margaret] Thatcher warned that socialists 'always run out of other people's money.' The president has made it clear he is nowhere near to being finished pursuing collectivism in the name of individual freedom." --Investor's Business Daily
Upright
"'We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries,' President Obama said ... in his second inaugural address. 'We must claim its promise. That is how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure -- our forests and waterways; our croplands and snowcapped peaks. That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God.' ... The new 'green energy economy' that Obama has repeatedly spoken of ... has always been among the most optimistic features of his vision for America. But given that it is an economically impossible pipe dream, it is also one of the biggest flops of his presidency. ... Obama rejected calls to lower the debt, ignored unemployment and basically assumed the economy was well on the road to recovery. It's not. Economic growth is slowing, and our nation's unemployment rate is stuck at 7.8 percent. A new push by Obama's Environmental Protection Agency to regulate carbon is exactly what the economy, and America, does not need right now." --The Washington Examiner
"[T]his is the worst recovery in modern history going back to 1947, just barely running at 2% growth. [Obama] never mentioned growth. He never mentioned jobs. He never mentioned unemployment. ... What I heard Mr. Obama basically imply [Monday] is that the pursuit of happiness is the pursuit of equality of result. Not the equality of opportunity, but the equality of result. And that he would do what he could to use the government to make everybody more equal, in terms of their income and their life's work. And that is exactly wrong. We should be rewarding success; we should be promoting entrepreneurship; we should be promoting individual effort and opportunity, and I didn't hear that. I didn't hear an opportunity speech. I heard an income leveling speech." --economist Larry Kudlow
"President Barack Obama set a new standard ... for stupidly exploitative White House events by appearing onstage with children to unveil his gun control proposals. ... News flash: Kids don't want bad things to happen. This would be a genuinely useful insight ... if we could write public policy in crayon. The White House event smacked of the old unilateral disarmament campaigns of the 1980s when we were supposed to get rid of our nuclear weapons because they scared youngsters. We can safely assume that the kids onstage with Obama don't have a fine-grained sense of the limits of gun control or a proper regard for the Second Amendment. That's OK, though -- neither does he." --columnist Rich Lowry
"The central question as to whether gun control laws save lives or cost lives has generated many factual studies over the years. But these studies have been like the proverbial tree that falls in an empty forest, and has been heard by no one -- certainly not by zealots who have made up their minds and don't want to be confused by the facts. Most factual studies show no reduction in gun crimes, including murder, under gun control laws. A significant number of studies show higher rates of murder and other gun crimes under gun control laws." --economist Thomas Sowell
Insight
"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom; it is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves." --British Prime Minister William Pitt (1759-1806)
"The right of the citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against the tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible." --Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey (1911-1978)

Inaugural clippings: "[W]e have always understood that when times change, so must we; that fidelity to our founding principles requires new responses to new challenges; that preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action. ... We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires and crippling drought and more powerful storms. ... Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law -- for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. ... Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia, to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for and cherished and always safe from harm. ... [T]he oath I have sworn before you today, like the one recited by others who serve in this Capitol, was an oath to God and country, not party or faction. And we must faithfully execute that pledge during the duration of our service." --Barack Obama
Bitterly clinging: "Do not patronize the passionate supporters of your opponents by looking down your nose at them. ... A lot of these people ... all they've got is their hunting and their fishing. Or they're living in a place where they don't have much police presence. Or they've been listening to this stuff for so long that they believe it all." --Bill Clinton on why Democrats should be careful with gun control
"I think those of us in the pro-gun safety movement should accept the Heller decision and say there's a constitutional right to arms, and it's no less important than the right to free speech, the right against search and seizure. But Heller also said that there should be reasonable limitations. They're allowed reasonable limitations. I don't think that [anyone] needs an assault weapon. I don't think [anyone] needs a hundred round clip [sic]." --Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
Not done raising taxes: "We Democrats have always intended to do a budget this year. We're going to do a budget this year and it's going to have revenues in it. And our Republican colleagues better get used to that fact." --Chuck Schumer
That's racist: "I worry a bit about 2014, when we don't have the president at the top of the ticket. We have a disproportionately number of older white guys, and frankly, being one of those types, we're the most insecure component of our society as far as I'm concerned; we're much the problem with these kinds of things." --Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA)
Great idea: "We must make gun trafficking a federal crime." --Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) (Let's start with Fast and Furious.)
Flattery: "This man has already done an absolutely remarkable job. I want you to know something else about this guy Barack Obama -- he's just getting started." --Joe Biden (Which is what we're afraid of.)
Joe being Joe: "I'm proud to be president of the United States." --Vice President Joe Biden at the Iowa State Society inauguration ball

Dezinformatsia
Nuts on guns: "I think [the Second Amendment] was limited to muskets myself, but the Supreme Court differs on this." --Politico's Evan Thomas
"The only civilians who 'need' an AR-15 assault rifle are those who want to commit mass murder. That's what they do." --CNN's Piers Morgan
Horrible analogy: "[W]hat happened in Newtown was probably the worst day in this country's history since 9/11. We found Osama bin Laden. We tracked him down. We changed the way that we dealt with that problem. Surely, finding Osama bin Laden; surely, passing civil rights legislation, as Lyndon Johnson was able to do; and before that, surely, defeating the Nazis, was a much more formidable task than taking on the gun lobby." --CBS's Bob Schieffer
The same, only the opposite: "[The current gun debate] reminds me a lot of what happened in the South in the 1960s during the civil rights movement. ... And now a lot of people who I know who grew up during that time have deep regrets about not speaking out." --Ex-NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw (Except this time, he's advocating taking away Liberty.)
More abortion: "[O]n the state level, there is this consistent erosion in terms of access to abortion, in terms of abortion rights, and I think young people if, you know, polls are to be believed and they voted for Democrats and they believe that abortion should be legal, I think feminist groups and pro-abortion groups have to find a way to engage them and educate them because they're going to be the ones that are on these grassroots levels and at the state levels." --Washington Post's Nia-Malika Henderson on Sanctity of Life Day

Clueless -- or evil: "I've been duck hunting since I was 10-years-old. I love to hunt and I love to be able to share that joy with my kids. But for the life of me, I don't know why the hell people have to have an assault weapon." --Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta
Distraction: "There is nothing the president proposed ... that would result, if enacted, in anyone -- any law-abiding citizen in America losing a gun. The president made clear ... his full support for the Second Amendment and the Second Amendment rights of American citizens. He also made clear that we have an obligation, and American citizens, including our most vulnerable, youngest American citizens, have rights, too. And we have an obligation to uphold those rights, including the rights of seven-year-olds to live without the fear of being gunned down in their own school." --White House Press Secretary Jay Carney
Getting it backwards: "I don't know if you know the genesis of the right to bear arms. The Second Amendment comes from the right to protect themselves from slave revolts, and from uprisings by Native Americans." --actor Danny Glover (Actually, that's the genesis of gun control.)
See Ben Franklin's warning about this: "I think the nation is very divided on gun control, but I think the majority of us feel strongly -- even the majority of gun owners feel strongly -- that we need to make some sacrifice to our freedoms, if that's the way to put it. We need to make some sacrifices to what we might want to have, in order to safeguard our children. I think there's a limit to how much -- I think the founding fathers wanted us to be able to arm ourselves, but I don't think that they would have agreed that we should have the capacity to do the damage that we do have." --singer-songwriter James Taylor

I love the name calling . I know some will say he is or I am. yet if you want respect and to be taken seriously, listen to the other side as distasteful as it is. Show respect and be informed by viewing all sides of the issue. the Gov of Ms says "Everyone has healthcare" I'm willing to be some of you don't. this is the point, we call names and it makes us feel good. Why does it make you feel good?
Joe Redneck in Maine
Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 6:49 PM
What makes you think it makes us feel good to call people names?? There are only two sides to every issue. The RIGHT side and the LEFT side. The RIGHT side is overwhelmingly based in Freedom of the individual and the Left side is based on subjugation by the government. If you can't see that, I feel sorry for you. And us because people like you probably vote, LEFTly.

Then don't call names and there is more than one side. I mentioned the HLSA, This is a right sided issue. I mentioned the gv of MS saying there is no one w/o healthcare. that is a people issue. You sold your freedom for President Bush said to sell your freedom or you weren't a patriot. You walked off the cliff and this is a freedom issue, not a left or right issue. You want freedom, I don't think so for if you did you would demand a recall of the right back homeland security act. I know, you want the government to come in and take you weapons. Bush signed it, not Obama.

Because Colonial riflemen were so accurate with their skills at targeting British officers at extended ranges, Parliament tried to ban the Pennsylvania (Kentucky) long rifle as being "ungentlemanly' and "unsporting."
Parliament tried to impose the penalty of hanging on any colonist apprehended with a Pennsylvania long rifle.
What isn't generally known -- or discussed -- is James Madison's comment on the occasion of his presenting of the Second Amendment for adoption. Congress, he said, must be "kept in fear of an armed and aroused populace." Hence the prime reason for the Second Amendment.
Can you imagine what reactions we'd hear from Obama, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Durbin, Napolitano, Schumer, Sibelius, Feinstein, et. al, if Mr. Madison were alive and made that statement?
Before nightfall, he'd be under arrest by Homeland Security, ATFE, FBI.
Oh, by the way, there was a time in our history when fines were imposed upon colonists who didn't carry their rifles to church. Were those times less dangerous?

the Supreme Court of the U.S., the Most Conservative Court in recent history turned down the question without comment. this means it has no merit. It past the Constitutional muster Test the question has been settled. Some of you are so worried about his heritage, I question some of yours. what you should be concerted about is the expansion of the Homeland Security Act. this is taken away all of your freedoms and who brought it into being? G.W. Bush/Cheney. they brought in communism/Nazism for everyone was afraid of their own shadows. In Germany (Pre world war 2) it was called the Juden Laws. Look it up. Fine, ditch Obama, the VP now becomes president. Is this what you want?

Be specific RK. What Freedoms were taken away? Homeland Security did not want to take our guns. Wire taping was for those that were non-citizens (Ie visit visa, or illegal alien) and only if certain words were used that matched them to Al-Qaeda/ Muslim Brotherhood (delete that one now, POTUS seems to be a supporter)/ or others that fit the intel. I do not agree with FEMA being under DHS, but not my call. DHS legislatiion was introduce by Democrats and RINOs in late 1990s. Hence the reason it was set up so quick. GWB is not a conservative. He is a RINO. He would have know not to bail out busines, but let capitalism take care of the problem.

Oh, yes, President Obama will leave a legacy, but not the one, I think, that he wanted to. His legacy will not be that of a great President (greater than all but two or three of his predecessors), but a crushing debt that will haunt this country for years, if not decades, trillions of dollars of massive government spending and Obamacare being but two egregious parts of that debt creation.

"There is nothing the president proposed ... that would result, if enacted, in anyone -- any law-abiding citizen in America losing a gun." After being in 5 different countries, short term mission trips, Haiti, Trinadad, Scotland, and Chile,I've had first hand experience with socialistic as well as communistic ideas of government power and social medcine. What an education! First,no one is happy about it. Secend, it's even moreexpensive than most U.S. citizens think,ex. Scotland's taxes 8 yrs ago were at 43%! And thirdly,I'm giving a thumbnail view, the areas I've visited, average persons are sickly, die of diseases that could be easily cured, and die early, God help anyone who gets in an accident. In my experience, Romania did the smatest thing, stormed the corrupt dictator's headquaters, chased him down tried him& his wife and sentenced them to die, and followed through. FYI, I was there1 yr after this happened and had the privalage to sing Amazing Grace in the largest communist meeting hall in what was the old USSR, along beside former communist gaurds! I find it incredible that Obama calls for unity. Never has there been a more divisive president. His bull-headed leadership has created an enormous rift that separates and discourages. His speech the other day points only to more of the same liberal ideology that he has used to choke this country during his first term.
It's going to be a rough road for everyone in the coming years, especially those who so enthusiastically voted for him but who are going to find the same new taxes, the same new medical insurance increases, the same shortage of doctors, etc., as those of us who declined to fall for his spin and rhetoric the first time. Having the chance to defeat him the second time around but failing to do so is unforgivable. But lthe crushing realities that will eventually settle upon the masses who voted for him will hopefully serve to create more responsible and informed voters in the future so that no one remotely close to the damaging ideology possessed by this president will ever reside again at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

I care about what happens to all fellow man. I know that evil is everywhere and everyone has the responsibility to protect their life, liberty and property to include those that cannot defend themselves. That means good people must be prepared to do bad things to combat evil, part of being prepared is having the correct tools to do those things. The minute either is not available the only outcome is for evil to prevail. I and others like me want to be able to have all the tools available to live up to that responsibility. My question is if you are not prepared to do what it takes to combat evil why do you and people like you want to remove the tools we need to protect innocent people from evil?

My greatest fear is that the Citizens of this Country are not informed enough to fully understand the end result of giving in to this Gun Ban, Everyone on the Anti side are claiming it is for the Children, that has always been their calling card because it tugs at the heart of every citizen, but in fact there is not, nor has there ever been a Law on their Books anywhere in this Country that has Stopped the Criminal from doing wrong. We as Citizens must force the Elected Officials of this Country from Dog Catcher to President to live up to the Oath of Office of Resign the Position, I have personally always felt they the Violation of the Oath of Office should be punishable as any other crime, but I fear I am of the only one of this view! The People in the Government are by and largely hired by us the Citizen to do a specific job, but they are under the impression wow we are here and now I can get rich, the only person ever elected to the Office of President that left with out being a Multi Millionaire was Harry Truman, but I digress. Getting back to the Arms Issue people are always asking why we need this or that, and the answer is very simple, the Founding Fathers knew from personal experience that in the Days of the King's of England, when battles were to be fought with an invading army the King would go to the People and Promise them that if they would help in the Fight they would be given arms and they would have the spoils of war. If the fight was a success there was a great celebration of the victory, during which the arms were collected and the Spoils put into the King's Treasury, the people were forced out of the Castle Grounds and told to go home defenseless what choice did they have.
We must never be put into that situation and this is but one reason the Founders refused to Ratify the Constitution with out the Bill of Rights expressly added to prevent the Government from doing as the Kings of old had done, if you disbelieve this read the History Books, not the Trash they are teaching out Students but the true History of the Days of old.
The weapon of use and the capacity is to be comparable to the Arms of our Military as if needed and called to service we, as the Militia of this Country will answer the call to arms. If you remember the Japanese Officer when asked why he did not attack the US his answer was very simple "Because behind every blade of grass there would be a Rifle"!

" I have personally always felt they the Violation of the Oath of Office should be punishable as any other crime, but I fear I am of the only one of this view! " You are not alone, Kelly! Unfortunately, all of us with the same view are not in office. We must take back our house from the career politicians, because they will never term limit themselves. A lot of districts vote for their guy, because it is the "name you know". I have also heard "If I vote for a different guy - we lose our seniority for our district." So they vote their pocketbook. I've also noticed the older the voter the more likely they are to vote the incumbent, talk to your parents, neighbors and anyone who will listen. So we must take an active interest, talk up the guy who has been trying to win the primary, and get his name on the ballot. It's been done before, and it can be done again. I'm in TX 11 and I hope Chris Younts will give it one more try to defeat Mike Conaway as our Representative.

Right you are Kelly!
