Scott Brown's victory was electric! When you walked into the Brown headquarters in Plymouth, you knew instantly thatsomething big was going on. All day, every day, the place was filled withenergetic people calling potential voters and asking for their support on January 19.Who were these volunteers? Men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Sure, therewere Republicans, but there were also union carpenters, an iron worker, an SEIU memberwho refused the union's directive to vote for Coakley, Independent voters, disaffectedDemocrats, and many people who had never before been involved in a political campaign.A real cross section of the Massachusetts electorate. Why were they there working so hard for this relatively unknown candidate for the U.S.Senate? Here's a sampling: "We're losing our freedom!" "Things have gone too far!""This government is out of control and we've got to stop it!" "We have friends out ofwork and they're losing hope!" "They're giving terrorists our rights...are they crazy?""Our health care problems can be fixed with a little common sense." "What are our kidsgoing to do if they keep spending, spending, spending?" "A bankrupt country can't helpanybody!" "We've got to stop these arrogant fools in Washington before they reallywreck our country!" These feelings were shared across this state and throughout thiscountry.Clearly, these are deep seated reactions to the policies of the Obama Administration andthe Democrat controlled Congress. Scott Brown, and his 200,000 mile pick-up, becamethe vehicles for change. He and his team brilliantly translated the pent up emotions of millions into compellingmessages and action.Last Sunday in Boston, the President misread the power of the message when hedimissed Scott and his symbolic pick-up truck. Mr. President, that's not a pick-up,it's a steamroller and its heading your way.I don't know about you, but I slept a little better last night. When I woke up that greattune from Oklahoma was playing in my head..."Oh, What A Beautiful Morning."This morning, the anniversary of his first year in office, Barack Obama awakened to adifferent sound...the smooth running engine of Scott Brown's pick-up truck.Happy Anniversary Mr. President!Lloyd Thompson 1/20/10 blog
