Former President Bill Clinton apparently called Donald Trump shortly before the New York real estate billionaire jumped into the GOP presidential race.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Mr. Clinton shared his thoughts on the state of American politics and encouraged him to get more involved in the Republican party.

The conversation came ahead of Mr. Trump’s June announcement that he was running for the GOP presidential nomination.

Mr. Trump is the front-runner in national polls and will take center stage tonight in the 9 p.m. GOP debate in Cleveland.
