Mark DeMoss, a public relations executive with strong ties to the evangelical community, resigned from Liberty University’s board because he, unlike Jerry Falwell Jr., does have principles and moral values.
In other words, he didn’t agree with Falwell’s endorsement of Darth Vader Donald Trump.
For many years DeMoss was chief of staff to Jerry Falwell Sr., the founder of the university.
“I hope we have not ‘fallen out’ over this matter,” DeMoss said. “I am a Liberty graduate and have been associated with the school for nearly 40 years. Despite our differences on this endorsement, Jerry and I share a love for Liberty University.”
DeMoss told The Washington Post two months ago that Trump’s campaign, filled with insults, has been in direct opposition to the values Falwell Sr. upheld and Liberty condones.
Members of Liberty’s executive committee voted or personally “asked” (there’s some disagreement on that point) DeMoss to resign after that interview because they just couldn’t accept that he took his religion seriously and spoke out against an immoral man while Liberty’s Great Leader had endorsed him. Hysterically, these board members accused DeMoss of playing political games: he supposedly made the comments because he supported a different candidate. DeMoss explains:
While the decision to leave the committee I chaired was not mine, the decision to step down from the board was mine. The president/chancellor and the board chair and new executive committee chair were suggesting my motive for speaking to the Post was entirely political [that I was a political pawn of rival campaigns], rather than a genuine concern for the reputation of the university we trustees have a fiduciary responsibility to protect. I concluded if they could not accept the reasons I gave them there was not sufficient trust to continue serving together.
In other words, Jerry Falwell Jr. can endorse the devil himself if he wants to (which he basically did), but no other board member should dare speak out against it.
And there I was thinking that Liberty University was a Christian institution led by godly men. Apparently I was wrong: Falwell Jr. and co. aren’t comparable to the old Christians willing to be persecuted and even die for their faith, but to the Pharisees who betrayed their religion (and therefore God) for power and wealth.
