The Right Opinion
The Problem With Santorum
Even when I agree with Rick Santorum, listening to him argue the point almost makes me change my mind.
I also wonder why he's running for president, rather than governor, when the issues closest to his heart are family-oriented matters about which the federal government can, and should, do very little.
It's strange that Santorum doesn't seem to understand the crucial state-federal divide bequeathed to us by the framers of our Constitution, inasmuch as it is precisely that difference that underlies his own point that states could ban contraception.
Of course they can. States could outlaw purple hats or Gummi bears under our Constitution!
State constitutions, laws, judicial rulings or the people themselves, voting democratically, tend to prevent such silly state bans from arising. But the Constitution written by James Madison, et al, does not prevent a state's elected representatives from enacting them.
The Constitution mostly places limits on what the federal government can do. Only in a few instances does it restrict what states can do.
A state cannot, for example, infringe on the people's right to bear arms or to engage in the free exercise of religion. A state can't send a senator to the U.S. Congress if he is under 30 years old. But with rare exceptions, the Constitution leaves states free to govern themselves as they see fit.
In New York City, they can have live sex clubs and abortion on demand, but no salt or smoking sections. In Tennessee, they can ban abortion, but have salt, creches and 80 mph highways. At least that's how it's supposed to work.
And yet when Santorum tried to explain why states could ban contraception to Bill O'Reilly back in January, not once did he use the words "Constitution," "constitutionally," "federalism," their synonyms or derivatives. Lawyers who are well familiar with the Constitution had no idea what Santorum was talking about.
He genuinely does not seem to understand the Constitution's federalist framework, except as a brief talking point on the way to saying states can ban contraception. Otherwise, he wouldn't keep claiming, falsely, that Obamacare is the same as Romneycare.
Rick! We're conservatives! We believe the states can establish a religion -- and the federal government can't.
If he truly believed in the Constitution, Santorum wouldn't be promoting big social programs out of the federal government, such as tripling the child tax credit exemption and voting for "No Child Left Behind."
No federalist can support this man.
Most recently, Santorum assailed Obama for saying everyone should go to college by responding: "What a snob!"
No! No! No!
Santorum's response merely reinforces the insane liberal worldview that going to college is the preserve of our betters, a hoity-toity proof of social class, a desirable consumer product like a Louis Vuitton bag.
This isn't the '20s, when only the upper classes went to college. These days, every idiot who can scratch an "X" on his checkbook assumes hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to make himself less employable by taking college courses in -- for example -- "Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame" (University of South Carolina, Columbia), "GaGa for Gaga: Sex, Gender and Identity" (University of Virginia), "Arguing With Judge Judy: Popular 'Logic' on TV Judge Shows" (University of California, Berkeley), "The Phallus" (Occidental College), "Zombies" (University of Baltimore), "Comics" (Oregon State University), "Harry Potter: Finding Your Patronus" (Oregon State University), and "Underwater Basket Weaving" (University of California at San Diego).
My fellow Americans, Meghan McCain has a bachelor's degree.
It's not snobbery that compels liberals to promote college for all; it's a scam to manufacture more Democratic voters, much like their immigration policies.
Is a Valley Girl who takes courses in Self-Esteem at Cal State Fresno (an actual course at an actual college) a finer class of person than a skilled plumber with approximately 1,000 times the earning capacity and social worth of the airhead?
No. But she is more likely to vote Democratic.
Encouraging everyone to go to college creates an all-new class of people entirely dependent on the government, which is to say: reliable Democratic voters.
First, the taxpayer subsidizes the wasted human space teaching these moronic courses (at prices far outpacing inflation), and then the taxpayer pays the incomes of the graduates who are resigned to filling ever-growing no-show, self-paced and self-evaluated government jobs.
Who else would employ a graduate with a degree in Women's Studies, Early Childhood Education, Physical Education , Sociology or Queer Studies but the government?
Santorum can't be the one arguing for our side.
Even when he's asked to defend his own blindingly obvious point, Santorum manages to blow it. A few weeks ago, George Snuffalupagus asked Santorum about a perfectly reasonable quote from his book "It Takes a Family," where he suggested "that a lot of women feel pressure to work outside the home because of radical feminism."
Santorum disavowed the quote and gallantly blamed it on his wife: "Well, that section of the book was co-written, if you want to be honest about it, by my wife, who is a nurse and a lawyer."
Mrs. Santorum is neither listed as a co-author nor thanked in the acknowledgments of the book. (Rick should read his book! It's probably chock full of interesting quotes like that.)
Then, when asked about another criticism of radical feminists from his own book, he said: "I don't know -- that's a new quote for me."
My imaginary beagle could have defended Santorum's book better.
(The only worse quote in the campaign so far was from Newt Gingrich explaining why he denounced the Paul Ryan plan on Social Security as "right-wing social engineering." Newt went on Fox News and said: "Let me say, on the record: Any ad which quotes what I said on Sunday is a falsehood.")
It was the same thing with Santorum on gays serving openly in the military. Again, Santorum is right -- but he still manages to lose the argument.
Back in October, when Chris Wallace was interviewing Santorum on "Fox News Sunday," he fell into a trap a 14-year-old high-school debater wouldn't have walked into, by agreeing with a quote -- without knowing who said it.
Wallace asked Santorum if he agreed with the following quote: "The Army is not a sociological laboratory. Experimenting with Army policy, especially in time of war, would pose a danger to efficiency, discipline and morale and would result in ultimate defeat."
To no avail, I screamed at the TV: "NO! DON'T AGREE! IT'S PROBABLY A HITLER QUOTE! SAY YOU'LL USE YOUR OWN WORDS!"
Santorum agreed with the blind quote only to be informed that it was a quote from someone arguing in 1941 against blacks in the military. (I didn't catch the segregationist's full name ... Franklin Delano something.)
He still could have recovered by demanding to know if Wallace was suggesting, therefore, that the Army IS a sociological laboratory and a splendid place for social experimentation in time of war, but Santorum just shrugged sheepishly and mumbled something about how that was different.
The problem is not Santorum's conservative positions, it's that he can't defend them.

Ann,We love ya, and yes, we know you're in the bag for Mittens, but how about putting things in perpective. I'll give you two guesses on who the political genius is that uttered this glittering jewel of conservatism:“This feels good being back in Michigan. You know, the trees are the right height, the streets are just right. I like the fact that most of the cars I see are Detroit-made automobiles. I drive a Mustang and a Chevy pickup truck. Ann drives a couple of Cadillacs.”I like it better when you beat up on deserving liberals. Say, is Al Franken still a Senator? Surely he or Schumer have said something more worthy of your derision than Rick. Sic'em Ann!

Ms. Coulter, you are so far off base it is pitiful. We are faced with a federal government that has usurped the powers and authorities of the states and of the people that if we don't elect someone soon that has the vision to begin the restoration of our "Republic" we will soon be an oligarchy of the rich and mighty "progressives."My own personal belief is that only 3 of the current candidates have the vision and the passion to start the process of restoration. Your preference in candidates does not, in my opinion Ms. Coulter, you are so far off base it is pitiful. I will support Senator Santorum and Speaker Gingrich.

Coulter back to being the chief Mit-Wit cheerleader. Agrees with Santorum but then claims he can't defend his message? Ann, have you gone off the deep end? How about this gem, Romney claiming Santorum is responsible for Obamacare because he supported then Republican traitor Spector. Romneycare only differs from Obamacare in the number of pages. I don't want State or Federal Governments telling me what I have to buy! It was a virtual tie in Michigan, Romney near lost his home state! The media would love to have the loser to McCain run against the Chairman. I will have to support Romney if he is the eventual nominee, as I would vote for a turnip over a marxist statist traitor. It ain't over yet, and until it is I would continue to support Santorum, who has steadily maintained his values over the flip flopping slick talking which way is the wind blowing today Romney.

Coulter makes no secret of being a Mitt water carrier. It's amusing for her to critique Santorum for not articulating arguments well when it seems that Romney learned conservative rhetoric as a second language using Rosetta Stone. Romney more often spouts cliches and platitudes than cogent arguments. Romney supports programs and spending that is not authorized in the Constitution, so all of Coulter's snarky preaching and pie-throwing on federalism splashes on her man as well. That said, Coulter is right about Santorum's lack of resort to the Constitution. That is, when asked some trick diversionary question about his book, his religious faith or his views on contraception, etc., Santorum should ALWAYS (every time) respond that, as president, his personal views on diversion X are irrelevant. The only thing that matters would be Santorum's commitment to his OATH of OFFICE and the Constitution -- and diversion X is not within the proper purview or authority of the President under the Constitution.Ron Paul can and does do that. Credibly. Santorum's problem would be his long track record of supporting legislation, spending and programs that are NOT authorized by the Constitution. Santorum voted repeatedly to raise the debt limit, he supported No Child Left Behind, etc., etc., when clearly the federal government should NOT meddle in education. Newt is also saddled with a long track record that does NOT match his reformist/constitutionalist rhetoric.

The problem with Ann!!!Admittededly, I did not read a SINGLE WORD of Ann's latest sellout screed. And, I never will again! But, I don't NEED to read anymore. She has taken an indefensible and unprincipled stand WITH the Mitt-iocrity; against a proven leader of the conservative movement.Any of us who remember the politics of the last 20 years KNOW that Rick Santorum has always been with US in the fights. Mitt Romney has been absent. And, now he has the GALL to claim that HE'S the real conservative. AND, for some inexplicable reason, Ann Coulter - erstwhile defender of all things conservative - has chosen to shill for this ULTIMATE establishment candidate. My suggestion: Stop reading anything Coulter writes, or watching anything she says, in whatever forum it occurs. She is an untrustworthy "lawyer".Go away, Ann!!!

The problem with Ann is the fact that she is a very intelligent, highly opinionated female. They`re the worst kind. They are, in their own mind, never wrong, and there is no reasoning with them. I have pretty much stopped paying any attention to her writing. It`s sad. I used to admire her editorials.Richard RyanLamar,Missouri - Birthplace of Harry S Truman

It is so evident that the Dems. and media want Santorum to be the GOP nominee! They know that they can eat his lunch against Obama! The CNN anchors could hardly contain themselves when Mitt started to catch up and defeat Santorum in Michigan! Who cares about Romney's stance on the auto bail out? Those union lap dogs would never vote for a Republican candidate regardless!! The Blacks have the highest rate of unemploment in the country, but yet, of course, they will all line up behind the Prez. because he has done so much for them. How sad!! I am delighted that Gov. Romney has the intelligence and business acumen to accumulate his wealth! Perhaps he can help dig us out of this 16 trillion debt!!

Hello America,One of my top conservative Valkyries is taking major hits for her stand on former Gov. Romney. I have been following Ms. Coulter long enough to know she knows from where she speaks. She is to right-on to be terribly wrong about Romney. I also know that though I am not crazy about any of the candidates, a head of cabbage would do better in the White House than B. Hussein. This guy is Hell driven to destroy what God inspired.Church and state and the separation there of is a no brainer. Our founders would literally be up in arms about what has come of the the ESTABLISHMENT clause and FREEDOM OF RELIGION clause in thconstitution. Since they were real 'freedom fighters' and not liberal proclaimed freedom fighter fundamentalist Muslim psychotics we are pitted against, they would take a stern approach toward our liberal problem, starting in the White House. The founders literally wrotes volumes regard their belief in 'Divine Providence' and the roll HE played in our foundational events and documents. They belived that if a nation believes in and depends on God Jehovah to see us through, our leaders would base all law and the interpretation of the law on those beliefs. The further we got away from our forefathers belief and dependence on God, the more enlightened humanist Illuminati we allowed to infiltrate and adultrate our social system that includes the economy.Although I like Rick Stantorum in spite of him being a politician, his lack of ability to stay on message, and off the cuff wild tangents regard his Christian beliefs dissapoints me. The founders purposely made church and state two separate entities on purpose. Separating them conclusively was foreign to their way of thinking. As many of them wrote for the historical record, God and government were inextricably linked. Until the late 20th century we prospered both societally and as a power to be reckoned with. It was at that time that progressive minds began to infiltrate the system and undermine our God inspired way of life, leaving in its wake this wasting disease that threatens to weaken us to death called 'humanist Marxism' or 'progressivism'.If Romney gets the nomination there better be a monumental cacophany of prayer going to God that he win. That it is not to late for God to make a difference. I'm not worried that he will bring his Momonism into office with him. The American public would draw the line at that.As I said. Ms. Coulter knows from whence she speaks so let's get behind the guy that is the most winnable as she has and if he wins we will soon find out what he is made of. As for me . . . I'm sick of lukewarm liberal Rino's calling themselves conservative, and Coulter is one of them...she's a pompous, arrogant, idiotic self-exalted intellect, who thinks she's an expert political pundit who knows everything about nothing. She fits into the same bucket of rino dung as Bill O'Reilly. It's these idiots that have destroyed the Republican party...for years they managed to convience enough Republicans that they had to move more to the middle to win and now they think they control the party. We proved them wrong in 2010 and will continue moving them out until we retake our party and restore the Republic and the Constitution that they've helped usurp. They may buy this nomination for Romney,I might have to swallow, hold my nose and vote for him. and they'll do the same damage they did in '08....they'll throw the election to Obama.... because there's enough true conservatives that won't vote for Romney anymore than they would vote for McCain. The Liberals gave the Democratic party to the far left progressives and socialists who are now kicking the "liberals" out. Now that they don't have a party they're trying to take over the Republicans. They do the same damage as a 3rd party...but they won't run on that, because "they'll" be blamed for throwing it to the far left progressives, this way they can blame conservatives for not voting. They know how to give all the right "speeches" to sway enough voters in our party and how to get enough crony big corporate money to pay for political ads full of distortion and lies about every conservative running against them. Well conservatives are awake now and we are saying no more!! we're not going to give our Republic form of Government, our Liberty and Freedom over to you!! America is not a Democracy...thank God our Founding Fathers had suffered enough under a Democratic form of government in the Countries they fled, and the wisdom and intelligence to establish a Republic form of government for America. So if you consider yourself a Patriot...take your liberal views and take back your own Democratic party from the Socialist that took it away from you. You might give us another four years of Obama... but we will hold the House, we will take Senate control away from the Socialist Harry Reid..and we will impeach Obama. We may not win our battle in this election...but we will remain as persistent as our Founders and we will prevail!
