How to Beat Obama
With President Obama's approval rating hovering at 49 percent according to the latest Rasmussen tracking poll, it is becoming increasingly clear that he is a formidable threat for re-election. Gas prices are through the roof; the economy remains in shambles; the situation in the Middle East has never been so tenuous. And yet nearly half of all Americans think Obama's doing a decent job. Which shows that nearly half of Americans are either dependent on the government or devoid of common sense or both.
It gets worse for conservatives. Obama's lead in Virginia has been growing, not shrinking. The latest Quinnipiac poll has Obama beating Romney 50 to 42 percent. In Ohio, it's no better -- the most recent polls have Obama up by 12 points. In Florida, Obama leads Romney by a 46-43 margin.
It's still early. But Republicans had better figure out some new strategies or they will be left in the dust by the highly-organized, beautifully-tuned Obama campaign.
Conventional conservative wisdom says that the Republican nominee will be fine come November. The economy is bad, say the pundits, and therefore Obama will lose as a matter of course. There's only one problem: That's never happened before. Bad economies help Democrats. That's because the unemployed typically want more government care, and the currently-employed tend not to think the economy's all that bad.
Triangulation is also troublesome. Seizing the middle in this election cycle will be difficult, since Obama has staked out a record of not raising taxes, leaving Guantanamo Bay open, and "cracking down" on Wall Street. Even if we recognize that Obama's record is deeply leftist -- his spending, his appeasement-oriented foreign policy, his dislike for traditional American values -- we will have to convince the American public that he is radical. That's an uphill battle in the face of a heavy media assault.
The biggest problem of all is that Americans seem to like President Obama personally. He can be charming; his family is certainly beautiful. He is also vain, rude, arrogant and nasty, of course -- but the media has covered up those characteristics. Despite his political approval ratings varying widely over the last several years, Obama's personal approval rating has never dropped -- it has remained high throughout.
Therein lies the problem.
It's a problem that can be laid at the feet of John McCain, who refused to define for the American public just who Barack Obama was, preferring instead to attack his arguments. That's a mistake in a presidential election, where you have to define the personality of your opponent before attacking him on policy.
Conservatives cannot make the same mistake in this election cycle. They must define for the American public just who Barack Obama is. Who is he? He's a man who never met a radical he didn't like. He's a fellow who thinks that American society is irreparably racist, irrationally bigoted and immoral beyond measure. He believes that fundamental change is necessary because America is a fundamentally nasty place.
When we seek to vet this president, we must look at all of him: not just the pretty pictures and not just the obvious policy failures. We must figure out what makes Barack Obama tick. It's only once we do that that the American people will know their commander-in-chief fully enough to lose faith in him. And he richly deserves that loss of faith.

Are you the same Ben Shapiro who stated on Tuesday that as the new CEO of Breitbart.com you would not probe the issue of Obama's eligibility? Are you the same Ben Shapiro who belittled anyone who thinks such a probe is relevant? Who in hell is Ben Shapiro? You had better figure yourself out before declaring yourself competent to consult for the Republican Party, most of whom are a bunch of cowards who are complicit in the Obama game of "Let's all pretend that I'm the President, or yuz guys are all racists". One day, and I expect it will be soon, you will discover that in order to grasp reality you first have to grasp that you are the creator thereof. Perception is not reality. Your perception is your reality. Good luck.

For the reasons you stated, Ben, gullible Americans will once again reelect the socialist. "He has such a nice smile. He speaks so beautifully. He's so handsome." And on and on. From what I can tell, 49% of Americans (at least) are dumb as fence posts and will vote for the traitor once again. Will they ask the questions you pose, Ben? No.

"They must define for the American public just who Barack Obama is." How do you say COMMUNIST? Nuff said!

Howard,The problem is about 49% of the American public does not consider “Communist” as being a bad word. Matter of fact, many of them consider it a badge of courage and a compliment. Just look at the pedestal they place Hollywood’s blacklisted Ten.

@Tex,I think this perfectly coincides with Mark Alexander's essay on women. Not that women are dumb (not at all), they just vote with a different appeal.I've never thought the presidency as a popularity contest, but sadly, it is. I HATE the "likeability" poll. What the hell does that matter? I couldn't care less if the president is a crumudgeon and has no friends, as long as he/she cuts the central state in half!!!"Oh, but he must be likeable!!!" Bull spit.

@Holmes Simons:I totally agree with your post! Too many people, such as our "congress," and people like Shapiro who are in a position to do something talk a good game. But when it's time to "start engines," they back off. Let's call a spade a spade (I must be a racist), and actually let people know what's going on. Unfortunately, the people who need to know these things don't read these columns.

@Holmes and JAC,This wasn't done in 2008, and with him having 4 yrs in the White House, I don't think it'll matter. Too little too late. No matter who impliments Shapiro's plan, they'll be labeled a racist. And, after all, would it matter now anyway? With everything that Breitbart.com is doing, it's not even raising a stink in the media.I agree with you guys, but I don't think this stuff is gaining any traction.

@Joe:I agree, and that's the sad part of all this. I do think it's too late. Columnists like Burt Prelutsky are confident the American voters will do the right thing, but I just can't make myself have the same confidence he does. I think we're f**cked.

Howard, Bravo! At last someone has said it: COMMUNIST!! Everyone's been pussy-footing around the truth with words like Liberal, Radical, Socialist etc. since the Pretender took office. Most Conservatives call the POTUS stupid. He's anything but stupid. He's a deliberate Marxist who knows exactly what he's doing. Every move he's made since he became the matinee idol of the lunatic fringe was carefully laid out for him by Marx, Lenin and Trotsky long before Obozo was born.... And Ben, Socialist is too mild a description. Most Americans have only a vague idea of what that word means. He may not carry the card but BO is a Commie in his heart!

"Which shows that nearly half of Americans are either dependent on the government or devoid of common sense or both."Right. And insulting and belittling the intelligence of the voters because they don't buy into your ideological point of view is SUCH an effective strategy for winning elections.I mean, look how well it worked for liberals for all those years.

I am leary of republican chances to take back the WH. Naturally as a person who has America in my heart and in my mind I hope for and try to help the republican cause.95% of blacks will vote for Obama again. They need to fill their empty bucket of self esteem vicariously through a black President. They don`t care if he ruins the country, most of them hate america anyway. 65% of Hispanics will vote for him and 100% of the white liberals will vote for him. That his approval rating is 49% after what he has done to America is a really bad indicator for Americas future. If he is reelected it may be time to consider a declaration of independence from liberal America. One and done. Nobama 2012, vote republican. Thank you.

Yes it has "happened before." The bad economy certainly did not help the peanut farmer. Perhaps Ben forgot since he is too young to have been around then.In many ways this louse is just President Jimmy writ larger and darker and from the north. Jimmy "inherited" a bad economy and made it worse. Jimmy screwed the pooch in the Middle East. Jimmy saw gas prices soar. Ditto, ditto, ditto. This guy doesn't have a brother Billy but he has surrounded himself with a whole cast of clowns.Remember who was elected then? If only we can get someone 1/2 as good ...
