The Right Opinion
The Moral Infrastructure
The "Occupy" movement, which the Obama administration and much of the media have embraced, has implications that reach far beyond the passing sensation it has created.
The unwillingness of authorities to put a stop to their organized disruptions of other people's lives, their trespassing, vandalism and violence is a de facto suspension, if not repeal, of the 14th Amendment's requirement that the government provide "equal protection of the laws" to all its citizens.
How did the "Occupy" movement acquire such immunity from the laws that the rest of us are expected to obey? Simply by shouting politically correct slogans and calling themselves representatives of the 99 percent against the 1 percent.
But just when did the 99 percent elect them as their representatives? If in fact 99 percent of the people in the country were like these "Occupy" mobs, we would not have a country. We would have anarchy.
Democracy does not mean mob rule. It means majority rule. If the "Occupy" movement, or any other mob, actually represents a majority, then they already have the votes to accomplish legally whatever they are trying to accomplish by illegal means.
Mob rule means imposing what the mob wants, regardless of what the majority of voters want. It is the antithesis of democracy.
In San Francisco, when the mob smashed the plate-glass window of a small business shop, the owner put up some plywood to replace the glass, and the mob wrote graffiti on his plywood. The consequences? None for the mob, but a citation for the shop owner for not removing the graffiti.
When trespassers blocking other people at the University of California, Davis refused to disperse, and locked their arms with one another to prevent the police from being able to physically remove them, the police finally resorted to pepper spray to break up this human logjam.
The result? The police have been strongly criticized for enforcing the law. Apparently pepper spray is unpleasant, and people who break the law are not supposed to have unpleasant things done to them. Which is to say, we need to take the "enforcement" out of "law enforcement."
Everybody is not given these exemptions from paying the consequences of their own illegal acts. Only people who are currently in vogue with the elites of the left -- in the media, in politics and in academia.
The 14th Amendment? What is the Constitution or the laws when it comes to ideological soul mates, especially young soul mates who remind the aging 1960s radicals of their youth?
Neither in this or any other issue can the Constitution protect us if we don't protect the Constitution. When all is said and done, the Constitution is a document, a piece of paper.
If we don't vote out of office, or impeach, those who violate the Constitution, or who refuse to enforce the law, the steady erosion of Constitutional protections will ultimately render it meaningless. Everything will just become a question of whose ox is gored and what is the political expediency of the moment.
There has been much concern, rightly expressed, about the rusting of bridges around the country, and the crumbling and corrosion of other parts of the physical infrastructure. But the crumbling of the moral infrastructure is no less deadly.
The police cannot maintain law and order, even if the political authorities do not tie their hands in advance or undermine them with second-guessing after the fact.
The police are the last line of defense against barbarism, but they are equipped only to handle that minority who are not stopped by the first lines of defense, beginning with the moral principles taught at home and upheld by families, schools, and communities.
But if everyone takes the path of least resistance -- if politicians pander to particular constituencies and judges give only wrist slaps to particular groups or mobs who are currently in vogue, and educators indoctrinate their students with "non-judgmental" attitudes -- then the moral infrastructure corrodes and crumbles.
The moral infrastructure is one of the intangibles, without which the tangibles don't work. Like the physical infrastructure, its neglect in the short run invites disaster in the long run.

"Moral" means "conforming to the rules of right conduct (opposed to immoral)." So, what is "right conduct." Well, for many centuries in the West, it has been conduct as prescribed in the bible, based on the teachings of Jehovah through His many scribes. Today, it is pretty much "whatever seems right to you." Thus does morality essentially disappear, and as Dr. Sowell says, we have no country, or civilization for that matter.

Mr. Sowell,I greatly enjoy reading your essays. Always a breath of fresh air and reason in a world largely gone mad.I have one small quibble however. I think there is little difference between majority rule and mob rule when either contravenes the Constitution which is supposed to protect our liberties. Unfortunately the majority of the citizens of this country have become so ignorant of the clear meaning of the Constitution and so morally unmoored that they can't vote on any issue with clarity. As you're well aware, the Founders didn't intend for the United States to be a Democracy, but that is what we have become. Undoing over a hundred years of "Progressive" damage to our country in time to save ourselves from Democracy seems an unlikely prospect. History and human nature suggest that hard times lie ahead.

Unfortunately the 99% crowd embraces Socialism/Communism to one degree or another. Plus their crapping on Police cars, and trying to kill Police officers kinda puts them right out of the moral category. As for the shop owner in San Fran who was cited for not cleaning the plywood - what did you expect from the Peoples Socialist Republic of Kalifornia. I mean they got Dianne Feinswine, Babs Boxer, Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown, Maxine Waters and a few other moronic Democratic Socialists from there. Too much smoking the sacred Ganja, and snorting fairy dust to think rationally.

@Son of Liberty It looks now that Illinois and California are more a threat to the Republic than Mexico. We might need to secure some other borders as well.

This present administration made it clear from the very beginning that crimes committed by minorities or leftists of any color would be ignored, if not outright encouraged. There's a quote from Eric Holder: “When you compare what people endured in the South in the 60s to try to get the right to vote for African-Americans, and to compare what people were subjected to there to what happened in Philadelphia–which was inappropriate, certainly that—to describe it in those terms I think does a great disservice to people who put their lives on the line, who risked all, for MY people.”—-U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, testifying in a Congressional hearing regarding allegations of race-based enforcement in the Justice Department, and taking issue with Rep. John Culberson, who was questioning Holder about the New Black Panther Party voter-intimidation case. Culberson quoted a Democratic activist who called the incident the most serious act of voter intimidation he had witnessed in his career, prompting Holder’s statement.Who is Holder referring to when he says "MY PEOPLE"? His sworn oath is to enforce the laws and the Constitution, regardless of race. This open act of voter intimidation and threats, which was very clearly caught on video and audio, was ignored by Holder, even though the NBPP had already been charged. If those had been KKK members instead of the NBPP, I wonder if Mr. Holder would simply ignore the charges that had already been levelled and called the crime simply "inappropriate"? Holder's previous words were "It's not going to do us any good to arrest any of them" (minorities). He has stayed true to his word, ignoring scores of crimes committed by minorities, and making a great deal of noise while arresting possible crimes committed by Caucasians, or in the case of Mr. Zimmerman, a so-called white-hispanic, whose mother is Peruvian and whose grandmother was black. What matters most to Mr. Holder is that Zimmerman is partly white, and he killed a "black" person. Holder forced his minions down to Florida to make sure that Zimmerman went to jail, even though the Sanford Police Department already had reports and eyewitness testimony which showed that Mr. Zimmerman was simply defending himself. The media has been complicit from the start, with NBC editing the 911 call to make it sound like Mr. Zimmerman was a racist, and repeatedly showing pictures of an innocent-looking 12-year old, not the 6'1" teenager who was on Tweeter as a Gangsta. Holder couldn't resist this opportunity to crucify a person who is one-quarter white. This, in concert with his actions in feeding guns and money to Mexican drug gangs, has shown that Holder should immediately step down, or be fired from his position. In any honest, Constitutional world, he would be prosecuted for corruption and for breaking the very laws he is being paid to enforce, while refusing to enforce the law regarding crimes committed by illegal immigrants and other "minorities".

Mr Sowell, I have just discovered your writings and have only one thing to say: THOMAS SOWELL FOR PRESIDENT!

They (the Administration) are pushing the issue for sure. Siding with the 99%'ers(?) because its a way to "never let a crisis go to waste". People are really dorked up anymore. I surely hope that the American people get smart enought to vote him out in November, because if they don't the only way we'll ever start to regain our freedom is with Rule .243 subsection 30-06.Sic semper tyrannis.

Occupation is an illegal act - trespass. The rights to march and demonstrate do not include the right to occupy, not in the least. The occupiers are law-breakers, and those politicians who protect them from the police are law-breakers. These are leftists, many (most?) are overt Marxists. They disdain the law and much about our nation. They have a long, barely coherent list of demands for even more free goodies, more socialism, and for removing the rights of their political and business opponents. Occupy Wall Street is a criminal movement, and so are the Democrats who protect them from the law. Arrest OWS, and arrest the politicians who protect them from prosecution.

Let's not swallow the kool-ade when OWS says that they represent the 99%. There is absolutely no way that they could possibly represent 99% of anything unless they all were locked in a room together. Even then, I don't think they can obtain 99%. That fiction has to be destroyed as they probably represent about 25% (freeloaders and reliance on the government rather than personal responsibility and effort).

Its time the real 99% stand up against the 1% communists occupy movement and make a stand against them and our illegal, uncostitutional federal government. We must prepare, organize, and solidify the ranks line in preparation for November 2012. It may soon be time to stand up for liberty, freedom and our constitution! Stand ready patriots to defend our liberties. The time is nearing quickly for action, and we may hear the call to duty very soon!!!

As much as I agree with Thomas Sowell on just about everything, I think he was limiting his thinking when he said, "The police are the last line of defense." I submit the armed citizen (me) is the last line of defense.

@AndyYou are a lucky guy! Read everything Dr. Sowell has written. You will love it. Your local library will probably have his books. And there's always Amazon.Walter Williams is also excellent.

The morality war can't be won in battles for the constitution or laws but in THE battle for THE foundation of law and order. the source of goodness, peace and justice - God. And as Mr Sowell, whose work I love and who knows this truth, dare not dig beneath the constitution to expound on how God has been eradicated from the public square is perhaps evidence that that key battle is lost and that all that is left for the troops to do is to fall back and defend as best we can the last hollow vestiges of a once great ideal. But has God been eradicated? If not let us rejoin that battle for upon God stands all that makes America great.

Your thought process is right on. Lets face it we are on the slide morally and as a country. Only the heart of the people can change things. That change will only start with good, strong, moral leadership. We The People must make that choice. Our current leadership has made its choice and been given that right By The People. Some time lessons are hard learned but future choices in the voting booth will be far more importantin the future as we will have an example to look back on.
