The Right Opinion
Time to Start Playing Offense
Recently, I wrote a piece in which I pleaded with Mitt Romney to toss away his copy of the Marquis of Queensbury rules and to stop playing defense in his battle with Obama and his gang of dirty tricksters. We saw what happened to John McCain when he tried to remain above the fray and prohibit his supporters from even mentioning Obama's ties to Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, William Ayers, Valerie Jarrett and Van Jones, and we don't need a repeat of his patty cake campaign.
I'm not suggesting that Mr. Romney play dirty, but that he constantly keep Harry Truman's words in mind. In the 1948 presidential race, Truman pretty much ignored his GOP rival, Tom Dewey, and ran, as Obama will try to, against what he called a do-nothing Congress. When people urged Truman to keep giving the Republicans hell, he said he merely tells the truth, and they think it's hell.
But it's not just Romney who is reluctant to recognize that all's fair in love and war, and this election is about as close to existential for America as anything since World War II. If Obama wins, it's not just that the economy will be forever destroyed, but Israel will be left to the unmerciful mercy of Islam and our own Supreme Court will be skewed so far to the Left that FDR's attempt to pack the Court will look amateurish.
It's Republicans in general who insist on bringing a water pistol to a gun fight.
I realize that the Left has a great many more megaphones than we conservatives have, but we still have our blogs; a few people, such as Bret Baier, Steve Hayes, Charles Krauthammer, Bernie Goldberg, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and Brit Hume, at Fox. Plus, we pretty much control talk radio, which is why the other side is constantly trying to find ways to get the FCC to nullify the First Amendment when it comes to our freedom of speech.
But why do we stand by while the Left demonizes decent rich people like Frank Vandersloot, the Koch brothers and Mitt Romney? Why aren't we ridiculing wealthy left-wing hypocrites like Rosie O'Donnell, George Clooney, Jeffrey Immelt, Oprah Winfrey, Jay Rockefeller, Barbara Boxer and Barack Obama? And let us not forget George Soros, the man who's so easy to demonize because his face, his voice and his personal history, are exactly what I have in mind when I try to visualize Satan.
When those on the Left strong arm sponsors into deserting people like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, why aren't we doing the same to those companies sponsoring the likes of Bill Maher, Chris Matthews, Al Sharpton and the rest of that creepy crew at MSNBC? For one thing, a lot of those lefties are college kids, the unemployed and folks on welfare. Who do you think sponsors are more likely to take seriously, millions of Republican adults with money to spend or the young, grungy hooligans who make up the Occupy Wall Street movement?
For that matter, when union thugs and Team Obama force a recall election on Wisconsin's Scott Walker, why aren't we doing the same to California's Jerry Brown or North Carolina's Bev Perdue? Governor Brown first told us we had a six billion dollar deficit, but, recently, while demanding a billion dollar tax hike, he has now decided the deficit is twice as large as he had first thought.
Governor Perdue recently said that, thanks to the 61% of North Carolinians who voted to ensure that marriage be limited to one man and one women, not only was she personally embarrassed, but that the entire country was so traumatized that we had begun to confuse North Carolina with Mississippi.
That's a patent lie. Mississippi, after all, was wise enough to elect a Republican governor, Phil Bryant, whereas North Carolinians decided a few years earlier to elect its first female governor, a bonehead named Perdue, who made it one of her first orders of business to veto a law making it mandatory to show a photo I.D. when voting.
That leads me to wonder if perhaps it's high time that we stopped using elections as a way in which to conduct social engineering. North Carolinians decided they would feel good about themselves if they elected their first female governor. At about the same time, Americans decided they would feel good about themselves if they elected their first black president.
All I can say is that not since Dr. Frankenstein pulled that unfortunate switch in his cellar have experiments gone this haywire.

Well said Burt. Right on point, and with a grin as always. It is time to play hardball. No time for "compromise" which always means doing it the way the deomocrats want.We are in a battle of political philosophy in which there can be no more compromise. If you try to combine Democrat socialism/fascism with some selected free market competition you end up with economic disaster, government dependency, and limited economic growth and opportunity. Forget Obama..as bad as he is with his executive over-reach, we must look at the last six years of congressional control by Pelosi and Reid. We must retake the senate and restore economic sanity -- maybe even "pass a budget". Not with the new "post-stimulus Obama baseline", but with real cuts to actual spending - and not just cuts to the rate of growth in spending. This is it folks. We are done if we do not fight now. Unfortunately, if we lose the political fight, it is just a matter of time before the thin veneer of civilization wears off - right here in the United States- and we will be fighting in the streets for our lives and our families. No compromise. Support conservative candidates now.

I agree, Dr. Timms. Because geography plays such a major role in elections, everyone doesn't have the same opportunity to elect conservatives as folks in, say, Texas, Utah and Oklahoma. But we should all keep William F. Buckley's sage advice in mind: Vote for the most conservative candidate who can win. And never forget that when it comes to counting noses in the House and Senate to determine which party controls the agenda, every nose counts...Scott Brown's just as much as John Kyl's.Burt

Another fine piece Burt. I hope that Romney will take off the kid gloves and go after Obama. When the Liberals cry fould, and "racist" he can tell the American people "Its not about race, its about ideology and the economy real numbers don't lie."He could seriously damage Obama now if he'd go after Obama's claim of "spending less that any American President." With Obama I still keep remembering the Communist mantra of "After the lies come the bullets in the back of the neck."

Burt, it seems that as each day brings us nearer to the convention and actual nomination, the Romney Republican message brings more and more unrealistic expectations and fewer and fewer of the principles of our founding. I fear that instead of a firebrand for our Constitution, it is much more likely that we are going to get Mormon milque-toast. Each day, men and women in our own government, sworn to secure our rights, instead take from us more and more of our liberties, our earnings, our individual freedoms, and our property. I hear the message of the economy. I long to hear the message of freedom.

Burt, Truman had the advantage of a "thinking" opposition, whereas Romney, if he even knows the truth, will never have his words heard by Obama's energizer base over the roar of cheap airconditioners, the chomping of moonpies, and the slurping of RoCs at the corner 7/11. Members of the Republican "establishment" have their lives and livelihoods tied to the criminal corruption of a political system that has evolved, no metamorphosed, into a private club of folks with no integrity and honor, whose raison d'etre is unmitigated power. I don't admire stealth, tenacity and audacity at the expense of a government originally designed to protect its citizens and provide them individual freedom to persue their own interests. d.w. hudson has the solution, but it seems no one these days knows what freedom is.What we have been witnessing over the past three plus years, is a well organized group of highly educated, wealthy, influential people, who care only for the freedom afforded them by power and riches through control of taxpayer funds and US assets, systematically orchestrating a political coup through malicious subversion and flagrant circumvention of the Constitution. What is their endgame? I don't know, unless control of 300+ million people and the richest country in the world isn't sufficient salve for their sociopathic egos. The founders made the protocols for amending the Constitution egregious to protect freedom from usurpers, like "the gentlemen" on the other side. These political pseudo-intellectual social engineers could at present never convince a majority of Americans to relinquish constitutional protections and benefits in favor of collective socialism by voicing their desires truthfully at a Constitutional Convention. Hence, their use of unethical and criminal platforms to achieve the desired ends. America will not survive trying to be the savior of and haven to diversity and multiculturism, as European nations are now finding out. Obama will continue the strategy employed by Susie against Tommy, a well organized, popular kid, for President of the 1st Grade Class. Tommy printed up posters, made speeches, and shook hands. Susie promised everyone who voted for her ice cream for a month.Romney must come up with something better than ice cream to win and fullfil the "dreams of his father." I don't see a salesman of "sweet freedom" when I look at Romney. When viewed against the "maverick" and "American Hero" who began the 2008 presidential race, I see McCain Lite. Now McCain has become an inconsequential everyman, and Romney would be well advised to take a different course.Unfortunately, Burt, the conservative individuals mentioned above have for three years shirked their journalistic responsibilities in exposing the reality of the character and intentions of Barack Obama. They have no credibility with me. That train has left the station.Romney may win regardless of the politically correct tactics that he and his "experts" are employing, but in the end America will lose if Romney does not break out and away from the dictates and constraints of the global socialists and become a true American, a defender of our history and our Constitutional freedom.

"...I sincerely wish that it may be as clearly foreseen by every good citizen, that whenever the dissolution of the Union arrives, America will have reason to exclaim, in the words of the poet: 'Farewell! A long farewell to all my greatness.'Publius." - John Jay Federalist No. 2I will sadly once again hold my nose and vote for the lesser of two evils. That said, I pray that perhaps should Romney win, he can at least slow down the slide until a truer conservative voice can be placed in the W.H.

"...patty cake campaign." I love that, Burt. And it is exactly what Romney is running, from my perspective. I have to agree with Holmes Simons argument. While we might hold our nose and vote for Romney, what, in reality are we going to get beside rid of Obama? As Holmes argues, the Republicans have been complicit in all the questionable tactics through the last 40 years or so. If the Republicans are our saviours from Obama, what can we expect from them? I have no idea, other than daily sound bites, many from a defensive posture. Which brings me back to your premise and a question it raises...will Romney come through for conservatives? Because without them he hasn't a snowball's chance...Texas is finally getting to vote in the primary next Tuesday, and my focus will be on who is going to represent Texas in Congress, because that's where the real power lies.

This latest joke about spending is classic politico of any ilk. It´s funny, though, the Hussein supports are so desperate they will grasp any straw.Hussein claimed he slowed the rate of spending. He didn´t do anything but the RATE of spending necessarily decreased by virtue of mathematics.Say we have a debt of x dollars. Hussein borrows x dollars more or a new debt-to-existing balance of 100%. Now the debt is 2x. Next year he borrows another x but now the new debt-to-existing balance is only 50%. That RATE will continue to decrease while that ol´ debt balance cntinues to rise by the same amount each year. He has not cut SPENDING but he can say with a straight face (perhaps of ignorance) that he cut the spending rate of increase.

Dear Burt, Again I left you for last so I could have a smile. For a while I haven't been sure about the PACs but now think Romney should let them be free to express themselves. After all, they have the right to free speech and there is supposed to be no coordination or control from the candidate. McCain's insisting that some subjects were taboo was interfering with the PAC's free speech rights. And while he was a "hold your nose" candidate to start with, he might have scored a little better if there'd been an actual campaign.Romney's PACs have so much ammunition they'd only have to show Obama "in his own words" with the Mitt voice over at the end -- "I'm Mitt Romney and I approved this ad." I know it's not original -- think I heard that on Rush.Gotta go with mac. Sure hope Romney's guys are listening/reading you. You're telling them what the Constitutional conservative American wants to hear and believe in their elected officials.;-)

mac: I'm Burt Prelutsky and I approve your message. I'm afraid, though, that Romney's team has decided they can win without my help. I certainly hope they're right.DaneChile: I hope you didn't do yourself any permanent injury trying to explain the math. The fact is, Team Obama lied, and the response to a lie should be, "You lie like a rug. The deficit was about $10 trillion and today it's about $16 trillion. Now start packing your bags...and, no, I wasn't really referring to Michelle." Burt

@Dane -- You're absolutely right about the decrease in spending as a PERCENTAGE. The big problem is the baseline budgeting BS that was enacted around 1974. And that's the trick "O" is using in this latest line. The $800B+ Stimulus Bill was supposed to have been a ONE TIME expenditure -- never to be repeated and, therefore, not to be included in the budget. Big surprise, that's not how the Dems figured it. It has been added to increase the budgets of all departments. As a result, a 3% increase in a dept. budget is NOT 3% of the budget it had BEFORE the Stimulus was passed but 3% of the amount INCLUDING the Stimulus increase.I'm all for going back to a "$0" baseline. It's what all families have to do. It would take some time but could be done. Big "IF" Congress has the guts. Could start by DECREASING the budget 3%/yr. Yeah, I know, it'll never happen at 3%, but there have been legitimate proposals out there to cut 1%.

@BNgranny,Bingo! We have got to return to a Zero baseline. The math is clear. Liberty will be lost if we do not act responsibly - and the Democrats, as well as some Rhinos - have made it clear they are willing to go along to get along, taking us right off the cliff. To Burt's point - it is time for Romney to get tough with lying SOB's that have put us is this situation. Obama is not " a nice guy ". He is a lying socialist, racist, narcissist who has no understanding of American Exceptionalism, because he is not part of it. Obama is trying to blame Bush, and ignoring the fact that the Democrat Congress took over in 2006 and unleashed spending (not to mention the ongoing support of the community Re-investment Act which caused the housing crisis) and began the decline. The political choice before us is stark.Big government socialism and limited opportunity, or Constitutionaly limited Government with conservative free market economic expansion. Romney must call Obama out - educate America on the two opposing political philosophies and why we cannot compromise and meet in the middle. We must reject the Big Government model and support the conservative candidate that will win or, prepare for the consequences.

Mac, I certainly hope you are right about the Tea Party, but they seem eerily quiet right now. I hope they're lurking out there, waiting to send the socialist back to Chicago where he belongs. But the campaign Romney is running (or Reince Preibus, or whoever) can't be encouraging to the Tea Party or anyone else. It's a weak-kneed approach even from a middle-of-the-road perspective. And remember, Bush beat Kerry by continually slamming him on his Viet Nam exaggerations. Romney definitely needs to toughen up. Burt could help, but Romney is too spineless for Burt"s help.

Dr. Timms: With the convention still three months off, Romney doesn't have to go into full campaign mode yet. But I wish he would handle media questions the way the Democrats do, by ignoring them and simply stating whatever he chooses to say.

Burt - two corrections. 1. To expect the God Owful Party to come out swinging is pie in the sky. Proof, another candidate that is following in the footsteps of McRino.2. Barry is not the first black President. His mother is half white and his father is 1/4 black the other 3/4 Arab/Muslim. So to use the words of the New York Slimes (oops Times) in the Zimmerman case, he is a White Black. That means his ancestors were probably slave traders and not slaves. So Blacks voting for Barry is like Jews voting for Adolph (thanks Hank Williams Jr.)And I am not hanging by my thumbs waiting for Republican Big Shots (you can't call them leaders) to come to the defense of Sheriff Arpaio.Mac - there is hope that Hatch may join Lugar.
