Breaking the Tyler Cycle
Someone sent me something called the Tyler Cycle. Alexander Tyler, a Scottish historian (1747-1813), allegedly discovered that democratic societies, such as the one that existed in ancient Athens, are doomed to repeat a vicious circle that begins in Bondage, then proceeds through Spiritual Faith, Courage, Liberty, Abundance, Selfishness, Complacency, Apathy and Dependence, before inevitably arriving back at Bondage.
Well, it seems that there was a Scottish historian named Alexander Tyler, but like so many of those things on the Internet that are attributed to the likes of Andy Rooney, Al Capone and Robin Williams, Mr. Tyler had no hand in creating the cycle that now bears his name. For the life of me, I do not understand why people insist on putting words in other people's mouths, but, then, I have no idea why the person, who saw to it that my quote about the three female California politicians being reminiscent of the witches in "MacBeth" went viral, decided to identify me as an L.A. Times columnist, which is something I haven't been for 34 years.
Even if Tyler had nothing to do with identifying the cycle, there is still a great deal to be said for it. That is especially the case if we take a moment to check out what is happening in America these days. Selfishness? Complacency? Apathy? Dependence? Sound familiar? How else would you describe the Occupy Wall Street movement? What other words would you use to define those fans of Obama, who are constantly demanding that the taxpayer pick up the tab for their birth control pills, health care, abortions, school meals, food stamps and college tuition?
So far as I can see, the only chance America has of breaking the cycle is to send Obama packing. Which is what I expect will happen just as soon as people begin comparing him to Romney. Maybe I'm a cockeyed optimist, but once most Americans see these two on stage together and ask themselves which of the two men best represents them, their values and their vision for our future, I sincerely believe that the majority will favor the Mormon over the Marxist.
But to help bring that about, I don't want Romney to stand around waiting for the debates. For openers, I want him to stop responding to the Democrats. It's foolish to waste his time reacting to every idiocy voiced by Obama, David Axelrod and Howard Dean. It is also a waste of time for him to answer every question put to him by Obama's hand maidens in the lame stream media. They are not looking for answers, but merely looking to make him look bad by editing his responses down to inane and embarrassing sound bites.
Instead, it's time for Romney to go into attack mode. Let him start demanding that Obama answer questions. If I were running, I would make it a practice to put forth an Obama question every other day. For instance, I'd ask him why he hasn't demanded that Harry Reid present a single federal budget during the past three years. I'd ask him why Eric Holder is still his attorney general after Operation Fast & Furious and his refusal to indict the Black Panthers for voter intimidation. I would demand to know why he, himself, stood idly by while those same Black Panthers placed a dead-or-alive bounty on George Zimmerman's head.
I would demand that Obama, who describes himself as the best friend Israel has ever had in the White House -- which might be true only if he were comparing himself to Jimmy Carter and Yasser Arafat -- explain why he treats Prime Minister Netanyahu the way Jews treat pork chops, and why he thought Israel should refrain from building homes in Jerusalem. I would also ask Obama if when he suggested that Israel move back to its 1967 borders, he regarded that as a prelude to Israel's disappearing altogether.
I would even ask him why he makes a bigger deal out of celebrating Islamic holidays than he does those dedicated to Christian and Jewish holy days?
I would demand to know why he keeps describing his energy policy as "all of the above" when he has done everything in his power to destroy the coal and oil industries, up to and including vetoing the Keystone pipeline. I would also demand that he defend squandering all those tax dollars, providing sweetheart deals to solar panel companies owned by his major bundlers, and, for good measure, I would name names.
I would also bring up the fact that he granted Washington unions the power to prevent Boeing from moving its plant to South Carolina.
I would rain on his victory lap by demanding to know if, as rumor has it, he was told as early as 2010 where Osama bin Laden was hiding out, but held off doing anything about it until a few generals told him that if he didn't give the order, they would. So much for making the gutsiest call in human history, as I believe Joe Biden referred to the no-brainer. But, then, that would be an even better description of the vice-president than the decision.
In short, it's time that Romney started scoring points, and not just playing defense 24/7. Obama, after all, is the guy with a presidential record. It's time someone put his feet to the fire and made him defend 40 long months of failure, incompetence, cronyism and corruption.
And in return for all this free advice, I will ask only one thing of President Romney and his Republican Congress. I want lame duck sessions done away with. Why on earth should there be a two-and-a-half-month lag time between elections and inaugurations? Why should someone who has been expelled get to remain in office, making trouble, for 75 days?
After all, it doesn't take that much time to take the pictures off the wall, pack up the kids and the dog, and hit the road. And in Obama's case, the sooner, the better.

Burt, this is magnificent advice. "Take it" to con-man and carney-barker Obama. Anybody listening in the Romney camp?? Go on the attack! Let him have it with no mercy. And hold the kiss-a$$ media sycophants' feet to the fire while you're at it. Please, no McCain re-dux. No Mr-Nice-Guy Clark Kent calling bHo "a nice guy." He ISN"T a nice guy! Mitt has got to be the Man of Steel (backbone . . . etc.), deflecting the pathetic lies and turning them back on Lex Obama and his Cloward-Piven-Alinskyite cohorts.
If I could send this article directly to Mitt's desk, I would. Great style and content, Burt. You never disappoint.

Burt, your clearly articulated strategy is likely to place you at the top of Goober's "kill list." Why haven't the other elected public servants and elder statesmen been asking these questions for the past four years? I can only assume that they and Mitt are fearful of appearing to do that which might offend the 45% of the electorate that are going to vote for Goober anyhow. They are all a part of the "Buffoon Conspiracy", a bunch of pussyfooters with no feet.
Mitt was able to get some sun over Memorial Day and is sporting a pretty good tan. Rumor has it that Goober is going to mandate the Presidential Debates be televised only in black & white. He thinks this will give him an advantage in convincing voters that, in fact, he is the black candidate.

Excellent essay, Burt. Please see that Romney's handlers get a copy. Otherwise, we could see a repeat of McPain's nice guy campaign. If he does not point out the many failures, high crimes, and misdemeanors of the Obamanation, no one else will.

Mac: I'll get to work on the handshake asap.
Holmes: Are you taking orders for those drone shelters? Come to think of it, I can use a drone shelter every time I hear Obama giving one of his boring canned speeches.
Greg: I have tried to offer my services to Team Romney so many times that by now they probably regard me as a stalker. But even without me, I believe they will win fairly easily in November.

The grand old party doesn't hold the demomarxists feet to the fire because they're very nearly alike and the scumbag commie left has enough on the gop to extort their silence. I tar them all with the same brush since we got where we are with both parties. It's time for at the least the Tea Party platform, at best with real Constitutionality brought back. I have little faith there will be any "REAL" changes even if Mitt is elected and has a GOP House and Senate. It's what they do, it's who they are. Anything short of them being deathly afraid of us will not get our freedom back.

Burt, I think an ice pick in each ear is the only chance for shelter from Goober's reading. I've tried moaning, but that just makes my neighbors call 911. Maybe I can pick up a moaning after pill or two before Obamacare bites the dust. I have found one trick that works pretty well - eye-gouging seems to keep vomiting to a minimum when he appears on TV. My vet says the ice pick in the eye is a permanent solution to the nausea, but I want to read MooMoo's new organic cookbook before I try it.
And, no, I only build custom, but thanks for the inquiry.

BJ & mac - the God Owful Party has been taken over by the RINO's. The Tea Party is just trying to get the RINO's out. The RINO's were thrown out once before. In 64 the head RINO, Nelson Rockefeller went nuts when he did not get the nomination. Remember him giving the crowd at the convention the one finger salute? I was thinking of voting Whig Party, but I understand they became irrelevant and no longer exist. Could this be a foretelling for the Republicrats if they keep nominating RINO's? There could be some hope, Lugar went down and Hatch may be next.

PRELUTSKY FOR PRESIDENT!!! The time for making nice, a fatal flaw of the GOP, is over! We US citizens have been repeatedly punched & stomped in the gut & the head by the Traitor in Chief''s administration & the UN. Enough already. Time for a donnybrook to them from the GOP! Thanks, Burt, I would love to vote for you. Will you accept?

Leah, Burt's way too smart to let himself be sucked into such an uncomfortable position. However, he'd sure be a helluva campaign strategist for Mitt.

Leah: As I have made clear, I wouldn't mind being the dictator, but I haven't the patience to be president. As president, you actually have to meet with and talk to people as stupid as Harry Reid, Patty Murray, Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi and the various members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Why would I want to do that?
mac: Thanks for taking care of BJ for me. Is there anything more tiresome than someone who parrots the line about Democrats and Republicans being the same? The question that comes to mind is if they're the same, why are they always running against each other? They could save a lot of money if they'd just cut that out. And, by the way, I happen to believe you're right about Romney being at least as conservative as Reagan was, and probably more so. I think you have earned the right to capitalize the "m" in mac.

Burt and mac - I hope you are correct about Romney, but I would not bet the farm on it. I judge a person by their action as words are cheap.

Burt, there are a few things that need to be done to break the Tyler cycle.
1 - Get rid of choom boy Obummer.
2 - Clean out Congress (both houses) and put in Constitutionalist followers only.
3 - Round up all Liberals and give them all lobotomies. Too harsh? Okay just ship them all to North Korea and let them receive some of Dear Leader's tender mercies.
4 - Get government's fat fingers out of the education system, the economy, healthcare, social security should be repealed and everyone who invested in it should receive a refund of their money. That would only happen when pigs fly as the government has already spent it.
That would be a huge start to breaking it.

SoL Liberal lobotomies. Too late. Apparently, from their remarks, and a complete inability to perceive the disastrous results of all that they propose, that's already been done.

@Son: Thanks for the glimmer of hope that when "pigs fly" there may be positive change. Well, my friend, the "Pigs" have been flying for almost four years to Spain, Indonesia, Kenya, Martha's Vineyard, Hawaii, Aspen, Mexico, Chicago, and most recently to every Beyonce concert on earth. No one has noticed because they have since birth cloaked themselves as lovable little nappy-headed COCKROACHES. It truly is amazing what Chicago barbers can accomplish with just a few perks.

son - you are 100% correct about Joe Stalin's best friend FDR's scheme. I challenge anyone to show which section of the Constitution authorizes social security. The problem is how to make whole all our citizens who had their funds stolen over these many years. Yes stolen, what else would you call it when something is taken from you under duress, don't pay your FICA and see what happens? If every program, agency, department, bureau, rule, regulation, law, etc. not authorized by the Constitution was abolished or repealed, the budget would be balanced immediately as it is better than 90% of the budget. This would give enough funds to make our citizens whole. BTW, I am 67 and getting back a very small portion of my stolen funds. I was self employed and had my own retirement plan. I put away approx. the same amount as FICA. I am now getting a return an order of magnitude greater than SS. Remember when John Corzine the crook (how did the assets in his fund mysteriously disappear?) from NJ was a senator? He did not want people to invest their SS funds in the market. So I assume when he was head of Goldman Saks, he told his clients to put their money under the mattress.
Burt - I found the best way to judge a politician, is by their position on guns. If they are anti-gun they are always no good. If they are pro-gun by their actions, they are ok. Don't judge by their words as politicians are almost always liars.

Good article, Burt, and I like your enthusiasm. I hope it bears fruit. Like others here, I'd like to see some offense from Romney, not the continual defense.
I am one who shared the Alexander Tyler story in this forum, and regardless of whether he really said those things, the words carry a lot of power. I firmly believe we are in the "Apathy and Dependence" stage. The next stage? Socialist dictatorship. Perhaps we can slow that trend by electing Romney.

Howard: I guess their position on guns is one way to tell good pols from bad ones. But I think it's even easier if you merely see which ones have an (R) after their names and which ones have (D). While it's true that not every Republican is equally good and not every Democrat is equally vile, the choice in a general election is always one or the other, and the choice seems self-evident to me.
Son of Liberty: Those huge letters do not help when it comes to communication. It is the equivalent of screaming...and screaming only helps when you are trying to get a liberal's attention.
