Dr. Sowell, I've been reading your columns and books for almost a decade, and I marvel at how well you're able to explain economics and social matters. What gifts you have! I don't know if it's possible to have an economist as a hero, but you're certainly one of my favorite authors and thinkers. Thank you for sharing your reflections on Milton Friedman.

I agree! We miss Friedman less because we have Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams. Long may they prosper!

Tom, you beat me to it...

Dr. Sowell, Milton Friedman's "genious and common sense" live on in you! Thank you for sharing both of them with us.

Dr. Sowell, Thank you for this fine essay. With Greenspan and Bernanke prominent in the recent past I had allowed Milton Friedman to be pushed to a far corner of my mind. You were very tactful to not mention Paul Krugman as die hard Keynsian-In-Chief.

"Societies that seek equality before liberty, will get neither, but societies that seek liberty before equality, will get a high degree of both." Milton Friedman. And "If the fed. government were in charge of the Sahara Dessert's sand, in five years, there would be a shortage of sand." Another Friedman quote. The gold standard, for growth (private sector), is the Reagan-Friedman years. Good blog, DR. SOWELL.

Dr. Sowell, I envy the fact that you were able to study under the supervision of the likes of Milton Friedman and you are certainly correct that there was never a time when he was more needed. Keynesian economic policy is killing our economy, just as it has in every place it is followed.

And yes, converts make the best apologists, whether in economics or religion.

"As a professor, he did not attempt to convert students to his political views. I made no secret of the fact that I was a Marxist when I was a student in Professor Friedman's course, but he made no effort to change my views. He once said that anybody who was easily converted was not worth converting.

"I was still a Marxist after taking Professor Friedman's class. Working as an economist in the government converted me."

LOL... Wow. I am astounded by these two paragraphs.

As a lifetime conservative, I just do not understand how any logical thinker can not see through the Marxist government we have in this country with OBAMA leading the charge! If we elect him again, this country will not survive as a free Capitalist country! May GOD help us! Dan4th
