The Right Opinion
What's Behind Hatred of Obama?
What drives Barack Obama's "doubters and haters"?
So asks Obama biographer David Maraniss in a recent op-ed article for the Washington Post. By doubters and haters he means the people who think Obama wasn't born in the U.S., that he's a secret Muslim or that he's a closet socialist.
He has an answer: "Some of it can be attributed to the give-and-take of today's harsh ideological divide. Some of it can be explained by the way misinformation spreads virally to millions of like-minded people, reinforcing preconceptions. And some of it, I believe, arises out of fears of demographic changes in this country, and out of racism."
True enough! Some people are no doubt driven by such motivations and anxieties; "some" is a gloriously accommodating word.
But that hardly settles things. For an essay titled "What Drives the Obama Doubters and Haters," Maraniss offers no explanation until the last paragraph (the quote above). And even then he offers no evidence, just assertions.
I think Maraniss is a great reporter, and I don't believe for a moment he is in on a cover-up of Obama's "real" place of birth or his secret Muslim faith. (Nor do I think either allegation is true.)
As to Obama's closet socialism, I've never found it unreasonable (never mind racist or paranoid) to think Obama's more comfortable with European-style social democracy (aka socialism).
Still, let me add two culprits to Maraniss' list: The first is Barack Obama. The second is the journalistic establishment that worked so hard to get him elected.
As Maraniss demonstrates quite effectively in his book, "Barack Obama: The Story," Obama's identity has long been a cultivated political project. Much of the poetic license -- to use a kind phrase -- Obama deploys to tell his own story is plausible only to those eager to take him at his word.
Maraniss couldn't authenticate Obama's tales of racial hardship as a young man. His grandfather being tortured by the British, the bigotry of his high school basketball coach? Untrue.
Moreover, Obama's explanations about the aspects of his past that have managed to become controversies have always seemed insufficient to people not disposed to root for him. Bill Ayers -- a former domestic terrorist -- was "just a guy living in my neighborhood." Obama's word that he wasn't a member of the radical New Party was enough for the press corps to stop digging for evidence that he was (as reported by my National Review Online colleague Stanley Kurtz). Jeremiah Wright? Only right-wing crazies care about him.
Even Obama's more recent embellishments about, for instance, being outspent and outgunned in his previous political races strike many people as the sorts of fibs that would create journalistic frenzies if uttered by a Republican.
And then there's the huge divergence between the president Obama said he would be and the president he's actually been. In 2008, Obama insisted that he was a unifier, a pragmatist and a non-ideologue. You don't have to be a birther or a secret-Muslim conspiracy theorist to feel like that was all a big con job. That's politics and not deceit (a subtle distinction!), but dismay at how Obama has governed doesn't amount to racial panic either. And blame for the widespread feeling that we were sold a bill of goods by a cheering press does, in fact, belong to the press.
Yes, Obama also signaled to his base that he intended to be a "transformative" president, a progressive Ronald Reagan. But that message was intended only for his base. Whenever conservatives picked up on those notes -- when he said he wanted to "spread the wealth around," etc. -- the immediate response from the Sunday talk show crowd was that conservatives were being paranoid for misreading Obama, the pragmatist.
It's fine to beat up on conspiracy theorists, but journalistic muckety-mucks who are mystified by their ever-shrinking credibility -- and profitability -- might wonder what they've done to fuel a climate of distrust. There's a reason why ABC's Jake Tapper is one of the few nonconservative reporters respected on the right: He's stayed as skeptical of Obama as he was of George W. Bush.
Meanwhile, it's fascinating how much attention the conspiracy theorists get. It's almost as if some journalists want to use them as bogeymen to discredit all criticism of Obama. That's some journalists, not all.

obama is a pragmatist - he'll lie/obfuscate/deny about anything to get what he wants.
Case in point: the recent ad showing him "donating" $5k to his own campaign fund while rambling on about how "he doesn't get the big money like the other guys". Really? What about all those $25-50k a plate dinners in Hollywood? What about all that money from Soros and the Moveon crowd?
obama lied his way into office, through 3+ years in office and is attempting to lie his way into a second term. Natural born citizen, muslim, marxist, whatever - one thing we know for sure is he is a LIAR!

Most comments here are irrational and fact free, mountains from molehills, straining at gnats while swallowing camels. You sound like ill mannered children.
Here are some facts for you. Today's joint Quinnipiak, CBS News, N.Y. Times polls for critical swing states Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania show the president has increased his lead over Mitt Romney. The key issue among likely voters is raising taxes on the wealthy. They're for it.
Mitt continues to impress crowds wherever he goes. He likes socialist Israel's national healthcare too. That health plan requires insurance as does Romneycare and Obamacare.

Facts? Ever hear the saying "Figures don't lie but liars figure."? Your quoted poll has been torn to shreds by many sources. It is oblablah and company who are "irrational and fact free, mountains from molehills, straining at gnats while swallowing camels." who "sound like ill mannered children". Let's see---from WA State, land of liberals, tree huggers, union thugs, and high taxes...sure, we really care what you think----NOT!

What we KNOW above all else is the he is a lousy, stinking President!!! Only the dyed in the wool, Kool-Aid drinking marxist/socialist/fascist think he has any of the qualities or accomplishments of even a mediocre President. He is an empty shirt, charlatan phony, and the sooner he is out of office the sooner this country can begin to rebuild and turn around. The uncertainty, fear and confusion he has engendered, in the American mind and spirit, is beyond anything that has existed during my 67 years on the planet. My prediction: The day after he is defeated, the economy begins to turn around; people begin to buy homes and land again; and our future as a nation brightens immensely. RJA

Mr. Goldberg, you have exceeded your own standard of pussywhipped, but you did make one profound observation in this ridiculous article:
"Nor do I think either allegation is true." YOU THINK YOU THINK. Try writing about something you know for once. I witnessed your participation at CPAC, or some other gathering of notable conservatives, and I changed my long held opinion that you know not on which side of the fence is the greenest grass. You obviously have tendencies toward political schizophrenia, or the grass in your pipe isn't all that green anymore. How do you decide which face to wear each day? Like mine, your opinions and thoughts are meaningless. The difference is, I suppose, that you make a living presenting your platform. Which poses the question of who is the most sinister confidence man, you or Obama? Since you believe the Obama story, it must be he. You are just gullible. It is too bad that you and the vast majority of socalled conservative pundits are void of intuition.

Holmes, I call people who won't commit, as you pointed out perfectly, cowards. People who will not firmly stand for something will fall for anything. This article was disjointed and a difficult read. WTH is he really trying to say? Who knows, who cares?

I don't "doubt" Obamao, I can see the damage done and the intent behind it. Facts trump emotional drivel, and I see that Obamao has an agenda that would destroy the Republic, embrace Marsist Statist Ideology, and bow to Islam. I hate that agenda and all traitors that would embrace it.

Amen, Mac. It appears Jonah has been overcome by his ever-emerging liberal streak. I'm not sure why he writes as a conservative because you certainly can't tell it from this article. Obama not a socialist? What proof does Jonah need (FORWARD., indeed)? And where is the proof that all can accept that he is a citizen? Obama is indeed a liar, and I'm thinking Jonah has bought into it all.

What would make Jonah believe? The Obamas tell you in their own words (verbal and written) that Obama is a muslim and that he was Kenyan born. Add to this his Connecticut social security number, his refusal to release college records and his selective service card and you ask yourself what Sherlock would conclude.

Mr. Goldberg, thank you for an opportunity to share ideas, and otherwise clarify personal thoughts. To begin with, I deeply resent being called a "birther", when all that I intend is determination of eligibility. In this regard, I believe it is rediculous to try and determine eligibility based on a single document, especially a birth certificate. Quite simply, there's much more to it. In the second instance, every American has a right to know how past officials assessed the President's citizenship. In particular, there is need to see personal records, all being kept secret, which will reflect whether or not the President was ever categorized as a "foreign student". Of course such awareness would further allow determination as to whether or not the President is a U.S. citizen of any type, having renounced citizenship (as per domicile in Indonesia). In conclusion, it seems rediculous for any President to swear upon a Bible, which clearly designates that Christians should avoid "children of the bondwoman"---that being those Islamists who claim to be heirs of Abraham through Ishmael. This conclusion derives from the President's well documented endorsement of Islam.

"... personal records ..." Like his college transcripts? I'm just wondering if those transcripts show him as a foreign born student. Then again it might be nothing more embarrassing than Obama flunking lunch and PE.

My intense hatred of him comes from the fact he against everything I risked my ass for while serving for 20 years in the US NAVY. I served so that the American citizen could live as they wanted, free from government interference. Now I see that some of the ones I risked for were unworthy of mine and so many other good peoples' efforts. Everytime he opens his gob I want to puke. I rant at my TV on all of his adds, and my wife thinks I'm really against him ( WELL NO SH*T)! He's looking to enslave us all and the dimbulbs out in America can't see it. They are too concerned with Facebook, clothes, stuffing their heads with food, does this dress make my butt look fat, let's go shopping, we need to take away all the guns as they kill people, were is my cell phone, where can I get a newer cell phone, I need an I-pod, I need bigger boobs, I need liposuction, AND EVERY OTHER SHALLOW REASON IN THE WORLD! American's are stupid, it isn't hard to see you just have to look at what goes on in everyday life around you.
Luckily my parents grew up during the Great Depression so I was instilled with the correct patriotic values. But today's kids I don't think really care who is in office, at LEAST they don't pay attention to issues. They just by into some jive the Candidate throws out and all is right with their world. And female voters are the worst, because they are buying into Obutthead's schtick he's throwing out there now ... "the war on women".
This turd is a Class A Prevaricator in Chief, and if he wins re-election we are done for as a nation of freemen. If he wins I do see Civil War Part Deux on the horizon, because trust me folks - He's gonna come after the remainder of our rights and strip them from us. We MUST defeat this guy, the fate of our nation hangs in the balance, and for the sake of all our forefathers' and the blood they shed for us to live free - we must do the same. Do I dispise this guy - YES!

Socialism by definition is govt ownership or control of property, the means of production (business) and the monetary system (Fed). If O is not a socialist, then I'm as mistaken about that as I am about my own plumbing!
The thing is, Jonah, is that the socialist O was telling the truth to his socialist (or ignorant idiot) base all along and being covered by the socialists in the media (which is almost all of them) whose job it was to demagogue anybody who came close to the truth. Those of us that think critically new all along what this man is. And we who value truth, the constitution, and don't care about being demagogued by liars will continue to, in the socialists own words, "speak truth to power", and remove this blight from office in November!

Jonah,
Do you live in a bubble from real people? It's simply the other side of the coin -- same things that drove the hatred of W -- the media and the country's socialists, marxists, commies, the elite of our elected class, drove the hatred of W and now they're trying to do it to Romney. This time around, we the real people, are driving the fear and loathing of Oblahblah, because he's the real deal to fear and loathe. And, we recognize that he's simply the most un-American person that ever occupied the Oval office.

The mother's milk of politics is money, cut the money trail off, if a corporation donates to him do not use their products and let them know why, if a media supports him cut them off turn the channel, use a different server, phone company or fuel supplier, out them to all your friends, associates and the general public, and the Congress needs to follow the money, all these federal guarantees to various companies that seem to spend it and then go broke losing it all for us sure seem to be nothing but a pocket liner for certain friends of Obama who I am sure "helped" him out.

Hatred toward G.W. Bush? 4 trillion borrowed dollars for wars that weren't necessary makes me very angry but not hateful. Then there's that Orwellian named Patriot Act...talk about eroding the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
The reason we have a Democrat in the White House is due to the fact that GWB was a disaster on nearly every issue. One reason Barack is in the White House instead of Hillary is that he voted no on the Iraq war.
Now 30 million people will be paying for medical insurance instead of showing up at emergency rooms. What's wrong with that?

Mary Colin, So you don't have any answers, just name calling?
If Mitt Romney could gain even a few net votes by invoking G.W. Bush he would do it immediately.
Mitt is no G.W. Bush if his governorship in Massachusetts is a guide, but he's no Ronald Reagan either. He's been on both sides of every issue for 20 years. What he might do if he gets elected is anyone's guess.
