The Right Opinion
The Fallacy of Redistribution
The recently discovered tape on which Barack Obama said back in 1998 that he believes in redistribution is not really news. He said the same thing to Joe the Plumber four years ago. But the surfacing of this tape may serve a useful purpose if it gets people to thinking about what the consequences of redistribution are.
Those who talk glibly about redistribution often act as if people are just inert objects that can be placed here and there, like pieces on a chess board, to carry out some grand design. But if human beings have their own responses to government policies, then we cannot blithely assume that government policies will have the effect intended.
The history of the 20th century is full of examples of countries that set out to redistribute wealth and ended up redistributing poverty. The communist nations were a classic example, but by no means the only example.
In theory, confiscating the wealth of the more successful people ought to make the rest of the society more prosperous. But when the Soviet Union confiscated the wealth of successful farmers, food became scarce. As many people died of starvation under Stalin in the 1930s as died in Hitler's Holocaust in the 1940s.
How can that be? It is not complicated. You can only confiscate the wealth that exists at a given moment. You cannot confiscate future wealth -- and that future wealth is less likely to be produced when people see that it is going to be confiscated. Farmers in the Soviet Union cut back on how much time and effort they invested in growing their crops, when they realized that the government was going to take a big part of the harvest. They slaughtered and ate young farm animals that they would normally keep tending and feeding while raising them to maturity.
People in industry are not inert objects either. Moreover, unlike farmers, industrialists are not tied to the land in a particular country.
Russian aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky could take his expertise to America and produce his planes and helicopters thousands of miles away from his native land. Financiers are even less tied down, especially today, when vast sums of money can be dispatched electronically to any part of the world.
If confiscatory policies can produce counterproductive repercussions in a dictatorship, they are even harder to carry out in a democracy. A dictatorship can suddenly swoop down and grab whatever it wants. But a democracy must first have public discussions and debates. Those who are targeted for confiscation can see the handwriting on the wall, and act accordingly.
Among the most valuable assets in any nation are the knowledge, skills and productive experience that economists call "human capital." When successful people with much human capital leave the country, either voluntarily or because of hostile governments or hostile mobs whipped up by demagogues exploiting envy, lasting damage can be done to the economy they leave behind.
Fidel Castro's confiscatory policies drove successful Cubans to flee to Florida, often leaving much of their physical wealth behind. But poverty-stricken refugees rose to prosperity again in Florida, while the wealth they left behind in Cuba did not prevent the people there from being poverty stricken under Castro. The lasting wealth the refugees took with them was their human capital.
We have all heard the old saying that giving a man a fish feeds him only for a day, while teaching him to fish feeds him for a lifetime. Redistributionists give him a fish and leave him dependent on the government for more fish in the future.
If the redistributionists were serious, what they would want to distribute is the ability to fish, or to be productive in other ways. Knowledge is one of the few things that can be distributed to people without reducing the amount held by others.
That would better serve the interests of the poor, but it would not serve the interests of politicians who want to exercise power, and to get the votes of people who are dependent on them.
Barack Obama can endlessly proclaim his slogan of "Forward," but what he is proposing is going backwards to policies that have failed repeatedly in countries around the world.
Yet, to many people who cannot be bothered to stop and think, redistribution sounds good.

I don't think I've ever heard redistributionist theory summed up so perfectly with concepts and analogies that are so easy for virtually anyone to grasp. It is a shame so many turn away or thumb their nose at such arguments. Either they are blind and ignorant to history or too full of self-importance to care.

"Yet, to many people who cannot be bothered to stop and think, redistribution sounds good." And there lies the rub. The leftist indoctrination factories (schools and colleges) and the leftist MSM shepherds ensure that the sheeple get fed a daily diet of nothing but propaganda.
If you add up the takers and the idiots you have a very steep hill to climb. From what I have seen so far, Romney doesn't seem to have necessary cojones to take on the evil facing this country. He's still spending most of his time pussyfooting around.

If we were to talk about tax policy throughout the post WWII era in terms of "redistribution", then we would have to conclude that presently we are doing the most to help the wealthiest of our nation. The Bush tax cuts, for example, essentially gave the largest break to those in the top tax brackets; 82% of the benefit goes to those with income above $1million. Lower taxes on investment income allows those who have more to keep more, while those who cannot make enough to save anything are derided and told to "take responsibility for their lives".
Republican tax cuts have resulted in redistribution that is not healthy, resulting in ever increasing income inequality and fewer opportunities for those left behind. The fact that I pay taxes at the maximum rate while millionaires like Mitt Romney pay 14% is redistribution skewed toward the wealthy. Bush tax cuts for incomes above $250,000 translates to $28billion redistributed to the wealthy.
Once you are in position to make outrageous salaries in this country, the republicans seem to be willing to reward you handsomely so that you can keep it. Pile that approach on unfunded wars and medicare drug plans that cost trillions each, and now we have a debt crisis. Blame Obama for it and here we are, talking about redistribution. Wow.

I guess you should have invested instead of consumed so that you could have the capital gains rate - it is not anyone's fault but your own.

FYI: I am a small business owner with revenues over $1million per year. I do take some benefit from the capital gains rate, but I am at the very bottom of the top tax bracket. I employ 10 people, pay for their health care, and offer benefits that I'm not required to because I believe it is my privelege. Maybe I should cut it all and tell my employees it's their own fault for not making as much money as me. I invest, consume very little, and am saving because I don't have anyone to pay for my retirement. So you guessed wrong Pete.

So vulgar. I am a health care professional, and I own my own practice. TAX CODE=redistribution. I think tax cuts to the wealthy are redistribution away from the middle, you apparently disagree. Lower revenues (tax cuts) and a depression/recession have caused this "deficit crisis", and now people like you want to take all cuts out of the poor. Heaven forbid we cut defense...even though we spend more than the next 8 countries in the world combined.

Don: Allowing someone to keep more of what is rightfully theirs is not redistribution: it is called property rights in most civilized societies. Taking something from someone who rightfully earned it and giving it to someone who didn't earn it is redistribution. You sound like you may be a student. Even if you aren't, you may understand this metaphor. If you were a straight A student, would you object to your school taking some of your rightfully earned A's and giving them to the C or D students? Would you object if the school took some of your hard-earned A's and gave them to the students who never went to class, spent all of their time getting high, and only received F's for their efforts? After all, they don't have enough A's and you clearly have more than you need. Right? Don, please think about this, the future of our country is at stake.

why weren't you all in an uproar when the upper tax brackets were at 70, 80, even 90%? Now, that it is at the lowest level of the last 70 years and the wealthy get hundreds of thousands in tax breaks, you are complaining? Get real. Is everyone better off? The upper class can't exist without a strong middle. Tax policy of the republicans is redistribution of wealth away from the middle and lower class workers. Sad.

When tax rates are to the confiscatory high levels of 70%, 80%, 90%, etc., people either stop working/producing or they put their money in legal tax shelters. This is what you fail to understand - we change our behavior based on gov. policy. We're not static robots; we're humans with the capacity for intelligent decision making.

Dude, get a clue: It is not tax "breaks". Breaks implies that these people OWE the fruit of their labor to someone else and that is called slavery. So you must be in favor of slavery. Well I suppose it could also be called theft. So you are in favor of theft of someone's property and would not mind people stealing your car. That is what is sad.

Don, I have to throw a BS flag that you own a small business. I have noticed that leftists often say they're in the military, or a cop, or business person when posting, to make they're nonsense seem plausible, and they're really one of us. This notion, parroted by idiots, jealous of those fortunate enough to attain success, that we're paying the lowest taxes in a hundred years, could only be swallowed by someone who has never run a business, cared for employees and their families, and navigated the maze of endless taxes and fees at every turn. EVERYTHING IS TAXED for us. EVERYTHING! It is the chink in the armor of the self reliant, and its called RESPONSIBILITY AND CARING. If you have those formerly admired qualities, the robber barons in government know you won't quit while they chip away at you and redistribute your just rewards to those undeserving, but with one equalizing feature: They are worth one vote also.

You're complaining about the medicare drug plan? What about the mother of all unfunded entitlements, Obamacare? As far as taxes, if one doesn't pay federal income taxes, they won't benefit by a tax rate cut. Why do you think they reduced our FICA employee taxes to 4.2%? If they wanted to make sure we had a larger net pay, why not change tax rates? By changing FICA vs. federal income tax rates, they're admitting to how many Americans don't pay federal income taxes! What people are missing when they are talking about redistribution is that it's a violation of our property rights. That is, taking our earnings (our property) & giving it to those who didn't earn it. I sure wish that we would obey the 10th commandment - Thou shall not covet.

No matter what you say about who pays the most taxes it still doesn't make it right to take moeny from those who earn it and give it to those who don't. We have a class of people in this country who have never worked, have no intrention of ever workiing, and believe the rest of us owe them a living. Ask them where the money comes from to pay for their benefits and they will tell you the government. They haven't a clue that it is the hard working people in this country who pay for their benefits. I don't owe anyone a penny of my money to take care of them because of the bad choices they have made. I owe it to my own family to take care of them first. The Republicans are no more guilty than the Democrats when it comes to taking advantage of tax breaks. Reform the tax code so it does away with those breaks and put everybody on the same level. This country can not sustain itself by having 47% of its taxpayers paying no tax but can still get a refund. Idiocy on a large scale!

Conservatives want to give everyone the opportunity to make outragous salaries/income/wealth. You propose to take from those that took the opportunity and give to those who just sat around.
If your paying taxes and the maximum rate, and a small business owner, I highly suggest either you hire or change your tax account.

"The Bush tax cuts, for example, essentially gave the largest break to those in the top tax brackets..."
That's not a statistic it's a talking point.
Democrats love to talk about "tax cuts for the rich," but are quieter about the specifics. Any reduction in taxes is going to be "for the rich" if you define "cuts" and "rich" and broadly enough. Since 47% of the population pays NO income tax, EVERY tax cut is going to benefit ONLY the richest 53% of the country. Of course, that sounds too reasonable to too many people, so instead they say that such-and-such a large percentage of the cut goes to such-and-such a small percentage of taxpayers.
But generally, that percentage of the tax revenues paid by that percentage will exceed any benefit that group of taxpayers gets from the cut. Our tax system is so heavily progressive (aside from capital gains taxes) that the top 1% of wage -earners pays 40% off all taxes. OF COURSE they will get the biggest benefit from any tax rate reduction; even if the percentage cut is less than other groups, the overall dollar amount will be higher (this wavering definition of "cuts", whether it's a dollar amount or percentage, is another way Democrats obfuscate the issue.)
What we need to do is scrap the tax code we're currently using, and replace it either with a no-deductions flat tax on every dollar above a certain minimal amount, or a consumption tax. YES, this will hit the poor as well, who now have no "skin in the game," and so have no reason to oppose government waste.
Furthermore, all benefits should be taxed as well at their value. If a single mother making $15,000 a year is being further subsidized by the government in the form of Section 8 housing, WIC, Medicaid, food stamps, etc, etc, by a total annual value of $80,000, why should she have NO tax burden, while a fully self-sufficient couple taking care of their family on an income of $70,000 does?

I can agree with the idea of your tax burden in the last paragraph. Case in point: Our newborn (now 9 months last weekend) has been on an amino acid based formula. This is a perscription only formula. Insurance had it at 60 per can (need 12 cans to get through a month,) The Peds dr tried to get throught the hospital network and that was 100 per can. Crasy thing is that the manufacturer sells it for 40 per can, limit of 4 cans per month. We tried to do WIC, but on the monthly average we made $500 per month to MUCH to qualify. So we took the black market approach, and were paying anywhere from 10 to 20 per can. Question: Why should it be this way? The child has to eat, and this is the only thing after trying 6 other formulas, that doesn't mess him up. I for one would have accepted the tax burden of WIC being applied for the assistance of feeding my child, and my wife and I pull in around $50K per year.

When you start talking about "paying for tax cuts," you are making the leftist assumption that all wealth and income are owned or derived from the government and that any final income ultimately comes from there. This assumption leads to the misleading statements made by Obozo about having to pay for these tax cuts, when in reality it's merely letting people keep more of what they have earned and what is theirs. It's similar to the left's argument that claims a budget reduction for decreasing the future increases that are already programmed. Or, to make it really simple for you, it's like taking a bucket of water out of one side of a swimming pool, then walking around to the other side, and dumping it back in.

Obama has never denied that he is a socialist. When asked he merely laughs. Somestimes he jokes while laughing at those that call him a socialist - but I have never heard him deny that he is one. In fact we often here him espousing socialist ideals and implementing socialist policy.
Obama does nothing to control real spending - yet considers "Tax cut's" to be a form of "spending" that needs to be curtailed. This guy is so wrong on so many important things that it is astounding to realize that so many Americans are stupid enough to support him.

Those who are targeted for confiscation can see the handwriting on the wall, and act accordingly.
Like in California, Illinois, and New York, where they flee the confiscatory failing states for greener pastures of freedom like Texas and Indiana. The useful idiots left behind now wonder in bankrupcy where the State will get the money for their survival. I have news for them, you are going to starve, just like in Stalins Russia, because we who have worked are sick of your sloth, and you can rot in your failed states you have created by voting for Democrats. The Bush Tax Cuts no longer exist. They expired in 2010. The extension of the present rates was passed in the lame duck post-election House under former Speaker Pelosi (how I do like that term former Speaker) in response to the "shellacking" at the ballot box in November. Then they were passed by Senate Majority Leader Reid and signed into law by President Barack Obama. The GOP held minorities in both chambers and could not stop it, even though they didn't want to. The present tax rates are the Obama-Reid-Pelosi tax rates, period. And extending the present rates are not CUTS, they are simply maintaining the status quo. So whenever you hear about the "tax cuts for the rich", remember who passed those so-called cuts and the fact that he LIES about who enacted the present rates. Feel free to pass along to your friends.
