The Right Opinion
Media Bias and the 47 Percent
The narrative of the Romney campaign as portrayed by most major media last week has been one of a tone-deaf, elitist candidate. In a presidential race as tight as this one -- the Gallup daily tracking poll Thursday showed the candidates tied at 47 percent -- the media potentially can tip the balance for or against a candidate in a decisive way.
Most outlets ran with the stories suggesting Romney was describing 47 percent of American voters as government-dependent slackers who pay no taxes. In fact, Romney suggested nothing of the sort. The videotape of Romney's remarks received publicity after James Earl Carter IV -- grandson of former president Jimmy Carter -- promoted the tape through the left-wing magazine Mother Jones. It turns out, the version of the tape available via Mother Jones was edited, with important sections left out.
But even the edited version didn't justify the media feeding frenzy it provoked. Romney did not say 47 percent of Americans were freeloaders. What he did say was: "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what." His words were simply a statement of fact. The electorate is polarized, with each party winning the loyal support of nearly half of the voters.
But the most controversial parts of his comments had to do with who makes up the 47 percent who are unconditionally in Obama's camp. It's important to note the context in which the statements were made. Romney was answering a direct question, which asked: "For the last three years, all everybody's been told is, 'Don't worry, we'll take care of you.' How are you going to do it, in two months before the elections, to convince everybody you've got to take care of yourself?"
His reply listed among the 47 percent who won't vote for him those "who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what."
But Democrats have been encouraging Americans to believe just that since the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson. And President Obama reiterates it every time he has the chance. So why is Romney's repeating the Democratic mantra controversial? Isn't it logical to assume that those who support President Obama agree with him about the role of government in providing health care, housing, food stamps -- you name it?
Romney has said his statement could have been made more elegantly. But inelegant or not, he was right; we are becoming a nation of people who depend on government. Nearly half of Americans pay no income tax -- Romney suggested it was 47 percent, coincidentally the same percentage that support Obama. But even though many of these people contribute payroll taxes, income taxes are what pay for government spending outside Social Security and Medicare.
All Americans share the benefits of national security and other necessary government programs, but nearly half of them contribute little or nothing to pay for those programs. Democrats believe this is as it should be -- we should just tax the rich more. But what does it say about a nation when half its population contributes so little to the protection and services they enjoy?
Of course not all those dependent on government subsidies are Democrats or Obama supporters. Seniors make up the biggest share of dependents. Most seniors feel that they've "earned" their Social Security checks and Medicare benefits. In fact, the majority of recipients will receive substantially more in benefits over their lifetimes than they contributed.
But Romney's larger point was that it's harder for candidates who want to talk about personal responsibility and smaller government to make headway when an increasing share of the population become recipients of government largesse. And it's harder still when the media distort what the candidates actually say and the context in which they say it. Romney summed up his answer by saying, "what I have to do is convince the 5 to 10 percent in the center ... " He wasn't writing off half the country but outlining a strategy to win the election.
The media's attempt to twist Romney's statement moves them from being journalists to partisans. And in an election this close, media bias just could be the deciding factor.

If the government had not confiscated 6% (or more) of my wages and I had had the opportunity to invest it at a more respectable rate of return, I would not NEED nor require an SS check when I have attained the appropriate age. I would love it if I were not "entitled" to receive my "stolen" monies back. My wife and I were fortunate enough to have investments and pensions from our employers from the past, which are greater than the SS we receive. The government says I can receive them so I keep them.

Self employed pay both halves...
How unfair is that?
I don't give me that nonsense about folks getting back more than they put in. For some who contributed little, perhaps, but for a self-employed young person, having 15% of their income confiscated, with out the ability to invest it, there is no way in the world they wouldn't do far better under their own financial guidance.

Lets face it! The lamestream media will do anything to get Obama reelected. Whatever Romney or Ryan says it will always be taken out of context and spun to make them look bad. They are not just running against Obama and Biden they are also running against those who don't feel any remorse in taking from those who work hard. That mentality that the government owes them has been fostered by the Demorats from FDR up until Obama. Lyndon Johnson really kicked it in to high gear with his Great Society programs. It never occurs to them that the people who fund these programs just might be tired of providing a living for deadbeats. God help us if Obama gets another four years!

"Gallup is out this morning with a new poll that contains a damning indictment of the mainstream media. 60% of Americans, an all-time high, do not trust the mass media to accurately or fairly report the news. Mind you, that isn't 60% of Republicans or conservatives, but Americans, of all political persuasions." Breitbart News
This says it all. The media is playing a traitorous game. They are promoting socialism with regard for no one who disagrees.

Unfortunately your excerpt from Romney's statement is just that - a carefully snipped-out segment that avoids the full context of what he said. Your version:
"Romney did not say 47 percent of Americans were freeloaders. What he did say was: 'There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what.'"
The actual transcript:
"All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them."
Apparently the media is to blame for reporting accurately on what someone said. The only "victims" seem to be those in positions of power or dominance who don't like fair play.

The other problem that no one addresses is that to get assistance isn't "fair play" either. My wife and I tried to get onto WIC for an amino acid based formula for our youngest (9 months this month) and were denied because we make $500 more per month than the program allows. The formula on our insurance is 50 per can, which is about 500 per month. My wife and I pull down combined less than 50K per year. and the formula would have been 6K of that. Where is the "fair play" in that John?

Thats the problem with most government "benifits" -- they are "income based" so anybody that works for living can't get them. That's OK with me, except that the takers complain about all the tax benifits for the rich --- there are none! The more you make the more you pay -- if you ionvest it and make money you get to pay again, and when you die your kids have to pay again to get whats left. If Obama wins I am joining the 47%, I will not continue to bust my arse to support freeloaders. (ie., those who have never worked to earn benifits and are sucking the system dry)

What is fair about taking money from those who work and giving it those who don't or won't? The reason you said goodbye is because you are just like the snooty liberal press who believe anyone who disagrees with them has to be uneducated. Someday when your freedoms have been taken away by the abuse of Constitutional law then who are you going to blame? Certainly not idiots like yourself who keep voting these imbeciles into elected office. You can't handle the truth about your Messiah!

Secretly taping people and then using it months later is subversive and,in most states, illegal. But,thats the Dems way.Dem rules are for other people.Dem people should pay for my housing, phone, edumacation, healthcare, etc. The 47% is the number of people that the Republicans figure will vote Dem.The true fact of the matter is there are millions of people in this country who don't belong here.Just ask Obama's Aunt Zoonie. SAhe was on tv saying that "This country owes me.It's not their country it's Gods country". Typical Liberal gimme, gimme attitude. Why doesn't that Fascist in the WH take care of his own aunt? Why is she sucking off of MY STATE tax dollars? FU Obama!

Explain to me the difference between; 'There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what.' and "All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. Yes Linda; our Treasury is depleted, egregiously, and completely,by about half of the United States population, that's about 150 million citizens, who whine to their pagan politicians, "I want,I want,--- gimme, gimme!" How can we set these people free, from their idolatry to Uncle "Sugar Daddy?" ANSWER---"Let Conservative principles, set forth by our Founding Fathers, lead them to full maturity, and Godly knowledge, on ballot box day!" My prayer for the 47%. Reread the US Constitution, leftie journalists!!!
