The Right Opinion
American Idea
Americans are harder workers, more philanthropic, individualistic, self-reliant, anti-government than people in most other countries. We’ve turned what was an 18th-century Third World nation into the freest and most prosperous nation in mankind’s entire history. Throughout our history, United States has been a magnet for immigrants around the world. What accounts for what some have called American exceptionalism?
We Americans, as human beings, are no different from any other people, including Germans, Russians, Chinese, Africans and other people who have produced tyrannical regimes such as those of Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Idi Amin. As such we are just as capable of committing acts of gross evil that have been a part of mankind throughout his history. We’ve not been a perfect nation but we’ve never approached the level of hideousness seen in other nations. That’s despite the fact that our population consists of people who have for centuries been trying to slaughter one another in their home countries, whether it’s between the French and Germans, English and Irish, Japanese and Chinese, or Palestinians and Jews, Igbos and the Hausa of Nigeria. Thrown into the American mosaic are religions that have been in conflict for centuries such as Catholic and Protestant, and Christian and Muslim. The question is: Why is the United States an exception and will it remain so?
At the heart of the American idea is the deep distrust and suspicion the founders of our nation had for government, distrust and suspicion not shared as much by today’s Americans. Some of the founders’ distrust is seen in our Constitution’s language such as Congress shall not: abridge, infringe, deny, disparage, violate and deny. If the founders did not believe Congress would abuse our God-given rights, they would not have provided those protections. After all, one would not expect to find a Bill of Rights in Heaven; it would be an affront to God. Other founder distrust for government is found in the Constitution’s separation of powers, checks and balances and the several anti-majoritarian provisions such as the Electoral College and the requirement that three-quarters of state legislatures ratify changes in the Constitution.
The three branches of our federal government are no longer bound by the Constitution as the framers envisioned and what is worse is American ignorance and acceptance of such rogue behavior. Look at the current debate over government involvement in health, business bailouts and stimulus packages. The debate centers around questions as whether such involvement is a good idea or a bad idea and whether one program is more costly than another. Those questions are entirely irrelevant to what should be debated, namely: Is such government involvement in our lives permissible under the U.S. Constitution?
That question is not part of the debate. The American people, along with our elected representatives, whether they’re Republicans or Democrats, care less about what is and what is not permissible under our Constitution. They think Congress has the right to do anything upon which they can secure a majority vote, whether they have the constitutional or moral authority to do so or not. What Congress does have is the brute force to enforce compliance with their unconstitutional acts. You say, "What do you mean, Williams?" Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution grants Congress the power to tax and spend for the enumerated activities therein. Every American is duty bound to pay his share. Congress has neither constitution nor moral authority to take the earnings of one American for the benefit of another American. What do you think will happen to you if don’t comply, say with Congress' demand that part of your earnings be taken to bail out a failing business? You’ll see all the brute force that you want to see and if you resist too much, death is not off the table.
We are losing what’s made our country great. Instead of moving toward greater liberty, we’re moving toward greater government control of our lives.

The reason for this intolerable situation is that we have been scammed by the DEM/GOP/MSM propaganda machines into always voting the lesser of two evils, somehow believing that we will not get more evil. Einstein said it when he explained that doing the same thing and expecting a different result is insane. All the die hards out there who believe in supporting either of the two corrupt major parties never seem to understand that. Therefore, today we find ourselves enslaved to the "INCUMBENT PARTY", which gets re-elected at an unbelievable 94% rate! The time has come to break this lock on power, restore Constitutional self government, and reclaim our stolen inheritance. The way to do it is to RUN FOR OFFICE ourselves. A campaign for the House in your local district is quite doable, and there is a website that will help you. It is called GOOOH.com (Get Out Of Our House). Check it out, why not? Are we really going to continue to entrust the future of freedom to these corrupt elites? Is that really what we intend to pass on to our kids? Thanks, Joe

Finally, someone is asking the right question!Thank you Dr Williams.Let us shout it from the rooftops. "Is such government involvement in our lives permissible under the U.S. Constitution? "That should always be our first question.

What we need is a second party. The first party has two squads. The republicans will do everything the democrats are doing but at a slightly slower rate. I have yet to hear the republican leadership (still an oxymoron) say Federal control of healthcare is not authorized by the Constitution. Rememeber when the Republicans took over Congress in 1994 and promised to change things. Can you name one agency, department, bureau, law, regualtion, etc. that was abolished? And don't forget the leadership of both parties are members of the Council on Foreign Relations and/or the Tri Lateral Commission. Anyone for a New World Order? James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington call your office.

Is it inevitable that a prosperous people with all basic needs met and an insatiable appetite for material goods, pleasure, and entertainment while at the same time "educated" to revile objective truth, accept moral and ethical relativism, confused about the real meaning of words, coddled by a group of secular humanist's who teach that since there is no God there is no sin, nothing one does is wrong if it makes them feel good, and a majority of greedy and corrupt lusters of power control corporations, companies, and all forms of government that this society they have created would not collapse? Two generations of Americans have succeeded in destroying the foundation and institutions necessary for a prosperous society to survive. The baby-boomers began our descent to hell on earth with their brain-destroying, mind-destroying, body-destroying, soul-destroying hatred of authority and tradition and their offspring added their hatred of the very nature of humanity to the mix as radical environmentalist's, sexual perverts, and radical feminism begun by their mother's while being raised with no sense of shame or guilt and a sense of entitlement never before imagined.America as it existed for almost 200 years before these two generations is extinct.

I appreciate the idea of handing God a "bill of rights" or a "declaration of inedpendence." The rule of law, notwithstanding, is necessary in an evil world.

Dr. Williams ... should you ever decide the needs of our nation calls you to elective office - you will have my vote and that of my family. The unbroken line of GOP and DEM "professional politicians" who have not held a regular job MUST end. We neither want, nor need, a government of "elites" - like lawyers who then write laws that benefit themselves directly if/when they leave public office.

The wisdom of our founders was a true blessing for America. With men like Walter Williams, the blessing endures. I hope our country is listening.

You are absolutely correct that the proper question is whether their proposed actions are constitutional or not. Clearly, many of the actions of our congressional representatives are not, and, as you say, it seems that they couldn't care less.We have few statesmen in Washington, and probably nobody with the integrity and understanding of the Founders all in one package. They are tearing to shreds their promises to defend and protect the constitution of our great country. Thanks for continuing to put your fingers in the dike.

Dr. Williams,Another great piece. But, the next question I believe that should be asked is how do we get rid of these unconstitutional laws that have been passed? I understand that it is through the court system, but besides spending 3 to 5 years getting a law degree, how does the average person go about getting these laws off the books? I'm guessing the Supreme Court has ruled that just because I am a tax payer, that does not give me enough reason to petition the court to declare these laws unconstitutional.

Your sense is not common, your ideas, once called classical, are revolutionary. The Minute Men of history are no more and the Constitution is waste paper blown into the gutter by winds created by the rush of the horde to get their share of the goodies. Bye, bye America! Thy good once crowned by brotherhood is no more. Socialism's head is now supported by the masses who delight in the redistribution of others' means and who are blind to the monster turned to devour them. Self adulating 'leaders' will, in their turn, fall because a benevolent God will not suffer evil to long prevail. Thank you for being a faithful harbinger of things to come.

The nation and the world would be far better of if Walter Williams had been elected the first black president. Maybe we can get him to run as the second black president.
