The Right Opinion
Another Mysteriously Motivated Attack
A couple of weeks ago, on the occasion of the annual hajj, in which 2.5 million Muslim pilgrims fulfill their obligation to travel to Mecca, prominent Muslim clerics from Asia, Africa, and Europe, along with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Iraq denounced violence in the name of Islam and issued a manifesto, signed by all, declaring that "murder of innocents is never justified and violates the teachings of Islam."
If you haven't heard about this, it's because it never happened. I conjured it to clarify the nature of the problem. Well-intentioned non-Muslims never tire of asserting that Islam is a religion of peace. Muslims themselves are a lot less forthright. (The Council on American-Islamic Relations has issued formal denunciations of terrorism, but coming from an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terror financing case, such pious declarations are worthless.)
Still, before considering the response to the latest outrage perpetrated by a jihadi convinced that mass murdering Americans gathered to light the Portland, Ore., Christmas tree would land him in Paradise, it's important to pause and notice that while Muslim leaders leave a lot to be desired, average Muslims are heroes in this story.
The LA Times reports that the FBI was alerted to 19-year-old Somali-born Mohamed Osman Mohamud's increasing radicalization by someone who knew him well. Other sources suggest that Mohamud had quarreled with his family and felt "betrayed" that they did not support his violent ambitions. Reading between the lines, it seems likely that one or both parents (both of whom, by the way, are described as loving America) alerted the FBI.
Further, the elaborate sting orchestrated by the FBI had to involve agents posing as Islamic radicals. I'm guessing here, but it seems unlikely that the agents were non-Muslims. There are probably too many subtle things a non-Muslim would get wrong. So kudos to whoever tipped the FBI to the danger, and to the (presumably) Muslim agents who saw the thing to fruition and arrest.
On the other hand, those Americans who think that respecting the majority of non-violent Muslims requires a mealy-mouthed denial of reality are doing no one any favors.
Some criminal lit a fire at a Corvallis, Ore., mosque a day or so after Mohamud's arrest. This elicited a scolding declaration from the U.S. Attorney, Dwight Holton. Did he denounce the resort to violence by anyone? No. He intoned, "The fact is that violent extremists come from all religions and no religion at all. For one person to blame a group, if that's what happened here, is uniquely anti-American and will be pursued with the full force of the Justice Department."
Of course whole groups should not be blamed for the actions of individuals. Yes, the Justice Department should pursue the arsonist. And, yes, violent extremists can be motivated by all sorts of things. But it is fatuous to pretend that Islam is no more likely than Buddhism, Christianity or Judaism to produce mass killers. When a Christian says "Praise God," people nod politely or in agreement. When a Muslim shouts "Allahu Akbar," everybody ducks.
If a Christian or a Jew suddenly becomes more devout, there is very little chance that he or she will become violent. Quite the contrary. By contrast, religious zeal among Muslims is often expressed with bombs and the blood of innocents. Thousands of imams worldwide preach violent jihad, Islamic schools instill contempt for other faiths, and terrorists actively recruit killers willing to commit massacres for Allah.
Yet Attorney General Eric Holder cannot bring himself to say, under questioning before Congress, that terrorists might be motivated by "radical Islam." The State Department and the Department of Homeland Security banned the words "jihad" and "mujahadeen" from official statements about terrorism. And the president removed the term "Islamic extremism" from the National Security Strategy.
Why is it so hard to tell the truth? The truth is that while the vast majority of Muslims are peaceful and law-abiding, there is a powerful strain within the religion that encourages murder and mayhem. Muslims, sooner or later, must deal with this, along with the rest of the world. But to suggest that acknowledging Muslim extremism amounts to bigotry, as this administration seems to, is both dishonest and cowardly.

I think Kevin that is the one awkward paragraph in a well written article. I understand what she is saying, but it is open to missinterpretation. But I can't even spell, so good article Mona and no stones do I cast.

As an affirmed and decidedly conservative atheist, I find zealots of any religious discipline can be a dangerous sort. Please note the term zealot, not devout in mentioning such practitioners of faith. That being said, truly only the Islamic zealots are the ones I find particularly scary! While the above article rightly points out that all practitioners of the Islamic faith are not bent on the destruction of our country, just as surely there are radical factions within that faith who do.This raises this faith to a distinction I cannot apply to any other faith. I've never heard Catholics, Protestants, Taoists, Buddists or any other segment of the theocratic world openly declare that the US citizens should either be converted to Islam or killed. This seems to be a claim embraced by ONLY Muslim/Islamic extremists, and yes Virginia, that is indeed frightening!Until the overwhelmingly ridiculous constraints of new-speak we all know as political correctness is rejected and true words can be utilized in discussing this issue, we will always find ourselves at odds with the reality.Though political correctness seems continually to stymie many areas within the realm of public discourse and confound progress on many levels regarding a plethora of socio-economic issues, none of them can begin to compare to the overall threat and impact that denying logical discourse regarding Islam and its radical elements can place upon our nation.

I just read Joel Richardson's book, "The Islamic Antichrist". All religion aside, the chapters on the Qur'an or Koran's view of Deception (lying) and Jihad are alone worth the price of the book. It extensively quotes the Qur'an/ Koran with published commentary by many noted Islamic scholars. This totally avoids the possible accusation of taking Islam out of context. You'll never look at Islam the same way again. "Kevin" has it exactly right....

Thank you Mona; excellent article and one that our illicit government should take to heart.I have said from September 11, 2001 through today that I still wait to hear "muslims" condemn that act. They should be outraged over it ever taking place, and they should have already turned-in osama to the US for Justice. The muslim leaders around the world generally, but mostly (and at the least) the muslim leaders in the US of A should be heard daily condemning that horrific act, and leading their “religion” toward true peace..However, I still wait !!! The islam/muslims overwhelmingly sit quiet. Their non-actions and their non-condemnation speak very loudly of their agreement with attacking USA and killing innocent citizens. islam/muslims deserve absolutely "no" politically-correct considerations, and absolutely "no" peace considerations. They are executing their plan and they are attacking, and we had better wise-up very quickly.

The endorsed popular view of Islam is one that is based upon wishful thinking and the politically correct idea that if we just be nice and accommodating there will be no need for any Muslim to become a radicalized terrorist.I will try to shed the light of truth upon the foundation and principles of Islam in a readers digest version.Prior to Mohammad, Allah was one of the moon gods and shared powers with other celestial gods. This was not much different from the view of the gods of Roman Mythology; the moon god group was mostly a regional thing for the nomadic desert dwellers.Mohammad, a warlord and leader of a nomadic clan, in order to raise his station and power conceived the plan to become the prophet of the greatest of those gods and to convince those who already worshiped the group of moon gods to accept Allah as the greatest of the moon gods with him as that god’s representative on earth, giving him infallible earthly authority as a prophet. To convert the regional population to his way of thinking he used what he termed holly war. You either convert or die, not a hard choice for many. Once converted it would be a sin to accept any other religion and to do so was punishable by death. In Mohammad’s quest for power it was declared the whole world would need to convert and it was the responsibility of all believers to fulfill that directive in any way needed.Today nothing has changed. Islam is populated by fighters and occupiers. Both have the goal of converting the world to Islam using any means possible, the methods have been outlined in the Koran to follow. Principles of other religions are not based upon a foundation of violent conversion. Islam is alone with that This current battles are just the most recent in the war that has raged for 1400 years. If anyone believes that any follower of Islam is not a threat to Judeo Christian principles and other peaceful societies have a real lack of understanding and have not studied anything but the liberal pogressive crap being fed by MSM.How can we accept the lie that Islam is a religion of peace and Islamic followers are in any country for anything other than to conquer when Islamic principles are truly understood?

To TheVonz, you wrote “However, I still wait !!! The islam/muslims overwhelmingly sit quiet.” I absolutely agree with Ms. Charen’s, your and others views on the stupidity and resulting harm of political correctness in not stating the facts regarding the connection between Islam and terrorism. I have searched many hours for a Muslim voice on the web that also agrees with that view and believe that I may have found one, albeit one.http://www.freemuslims.org/I would be interested in the views of this website from anyone reading this. On the surface it seems to be just what it claims to be, Muslims speaking out against “…terror in Islam” Anybody out there have knowledge of this organization?

Inquisitive; It is all the same, just another tactic. A vicious dog with its tail between it legs to deceive. Do not be fooled into thinking the goals have changed because an organization has candy coated their intent.Imagine living under Islamic law!

Inquisitive:I looked at the site; the only thing that really stands out to me is that even they are acknowledging that the high majority of islam/muslims truly are Terrorists. And as Anton Rehling stated, they just lie in order to deceive as they move continually forward with their agenda. How can you ever trust an entity (muslims) whose entire intent is to take over the world by any means possible. They state their objectives as:1) killing/eliminating all who will not convert2) eliminate/burn Isreal; (Isreal, our true ally, even though our current illegitimate government has turned their back on them); 3) eliminate the great satan (USA); 4) they are a terrorist movement without State boundaries;5) they quietly infiltrate countries until when strong enough they begin riots and destruction thereby taking over sections, then cities, then...6).....The US of A is a Christian Judeo nation who truly wants peace, and because of that we are passive to the threats against us, thereby creating this politically-correct approach... until it is too late.

I sure find agreement with TheVonz statements above. The closest historic analogy I can make in our treatment of the Islamic situation in our country as well as abroad is in how the appeasement moves granted towards Hitler worked. As he led his armies into one country, then another, and another across Europe the rest of the continent seemed to look at one another and say "If we allow this, maybe the Germans will stop here", which of course they did not.The continued encroachment of Islam and the spread of Sharia law that has accompanied it throughout Europe seems eerily all too similar and their continued appeasement seems to have made the same amount of logic in tackling the real issues today that it did in Hitlers time.To my knowledge one of the few voices of sanity in Europe today is a politician named Geert Wilders and sadly it's also lead to constant death threats against him as well as a required 24/7 security entourage just to allow him to keep drawing breath. Google him up for an education on the fight he's had even within his own government and see if it doesn't tell a(nother) tale about this whole issue that our press here NEVER even mentions ... surprise, surprise :>/With sections of Paris now closed off for their afternoon prayers as thousands of Muslims take to the streets and prevent any public passage in these areas during these prayers, it would seem France is pretty much done for as we speak. Though we all know of the Frenchs' penchant for acquiescing to invading forces anyway, such an admonition does little to down play what is truly a frightening trend there.Islam coupled with the demand for acceptance of Sharia law as an eventuality once the Muslim population reaches a tipping point is seemingly nearing that point in many of our metropolitan areas. It only seems a matter of time until demands for acceptance of Islamic sanctioned Sharia courts will be placed upon US citizens by these encroachments that we will find even more unacceptable than the demands they already have made upon us.With our current Appeaser-in Chief at the helm and the all too obvious leanings he's made on their behalf, I hope there's something left for us to save by 2012.And ... if he winds up being re-elected for a second term I'm not sure the US we know and love will still exist by 2016 :>(
