The Silver Lining of the Left in Power

· Tuesday, November 17, 2009

There may be a major silver lining for conservatives and for America's future thanks to the foreign and domestic policies of President Obama and the Democrat-controlled House and Senate: For the first time in their lives, millions of Americans are coming to understand the left.

It is difficult to overstate how important this is. For decades, the left has largely controlled the news media, the arts, the universities and the entertainment media. And vast numbers of Americans have imbibed these leftist messages and the leftist critiques of conservatives. What these Americans have never been able to do is to see what the left would actually do if in power.

Of course, all one had to do was look at California and see how a left-wing legislature brought the country's largest state economy to near insolvency and bankruptcy, chased away many of its most productive citizens, and wasted tens of billions of dollars thanks in large measure to union domination of the state's politics.

But most Americans do not observe other states. Most Americans are preoccupied with their lives and, unfortunately, with what is on television.

Now, this has all changed. Americans are watching California enacted on the national stage.

And it is scaring all but the ideologically committed left -- a rather small, if profoundly influential and powerful, minority. This is why last week, Gallup reported an extraordinarily dramatic and quick shift of independent voters' electoral preferences. In the Gallup Poll's words: "Over the course of the year, independents' preference for the Republican candidate in their districts has grown, from a 1-point advantage in July to the current 22-point gap."

In half a year, there has been a 23 percent shift from Democrats to Republicans among independent voters. And nothing particularly bad had occurred -- no further economic meltdown, no terrorist attack from abroad (the Poll preceded the Fort Hood attack).

Now Americans see the left's policies for what they are:

1. The left wants America to abandon its defining commitment to individualism and replace it with a European-style nanny, or welfare, state. At most Americans' core is an abiding belief that we are supposed to take care of ourselves, our families and our neighbors, and not rely on the state to do so.

2. The left is naive about evil. Most Americans deemed Communism evil; the left ridiculed President Ronald Reagan for calling the Soviet Union an "evil empire" and often undermined the fight against the Communist world. So, too, the left is naive about Islamic terror and undermines the fight against it.

The smoking gun was the nearly universal denial by the left that his Islamic beliefs had anything to do with Maj. Nidal Hasan's mass murder of fellow servicemen at Fort Hood. One of many examples was this reaction to the shootings by Evan Thomas, Editor at Large at Newsweek: "I think he's probably just a nut case. But with that label (Muslim) attached to him, it will get the right wing going..."

3. The left is more interested in redistributing wealth than in creating it. This should have been as obvious to Americans as the brightness of the sun. Finally, Americans are coming to realize that the left's goal is now, as it always has been, equality, not prosperity.

4. The left is far more interested in power than the right is. This, too, should have been self-evident, but finally, people are realizing that those who are preoccupied with creating an ever-expanding state are obviously far more interested in amassing power than those who want a smaller state.

5. The left is preoccupied with America being loved, and in pursuit of that end, compromises some of America's core values. Examples abound here, too. To cite a few: the Obama administration's neglect of those in Iran risking their lives for freedom in that tyranny; the administration's refusal to meet with the Dalai Lama when the Tibetan leader visited Washington, lest the president annoy China's dictators; the American government siding with Hugo Chavez against the Honduran government, which had legally removed a Chavez clone from the Honduran presidency; and the president's obsequious apologies for America wherever he goes.

A motto of my radio show and of my life is "Clarity is our friend." It is certainly so here. Clarity about the left will be a blessing to America.

Sir, I would like to politely disagree with you. First of all, I would suggest defining some of the words you use, such as evil and values. It is naive to call something evil, for how do we define evil? Do we define it by the often simplistic Judeo-Christian standard? That applies also to the definition of values. Also, the reason why Obama voluntarily apologizes to allies and hostiles alike is because his predecessor has royally messed up our political standing in the world. Unlike previous right-leaning presidents, our current president has decided to follow a road of moderation and diplomacy, instead of an ethnocentric attitude. One last thing. By creating wealth and still having the socio-economic structure we used to have, still will leave us in financial ruin. The redistribution of wealth is important, because the old "trickle-down" theory of economics has been proven irrefutably wrong. I suggest you look at the quote by Samuel Adams a bit closer. "If you love wealth better than liberty, which is what a purely capatalistic system not only is defined by, but demands.

oh, CALIFORNIA. isn't there some dude governing the state there, that you lot were talking about AMENDING THE CONSTITUTION FOR, so he could run for president? i can't remember his name, just that he ran on a "fiscal conservative" soundbite. er, platform.

sarah palin is the future of the republican party. sorry. that's the face of the GOP, that's the brains of the GOP, that's the SOUL of the GOP. you got nothing to offer, and you arrived at this loathsome state by choice.

there are lots of serious flaws in the direction of the democratic party, but every one of them can be summarized as "insufficient contrast with the previous eight years"

And the Silver Lining is?

A justifiable hope of Republican Victory?

I'm not sure if that's your thing, Mr Prager, but it's a note I keep hearing and I want to draw a distinction. We're all smelling something very strong in the air here, but too often romping down the wrong trail. Let's take a another whiff and look a little harder into the deep dark woods.

Not only is America seeing Twiddly Dee of the Democratic far left on plain display, but the mask has slipped a bit on Twiddly Dum of the Republican lip-service "conservative" scammers.

At least we can lend some scant respect to lefties. Their lies have become transparent rituals, as if expected sacrifices to the obvious God of Greater Government. Thet're not really even trying to fool us any more about their intentions. It's ALMOST honest?!?!

I'll be happy when the Republican Party has been as thoroughly exposed, and we ARE getting there. What good is really happening when the opposition to the party of Big Gov Straight Up is merely the party of Little Gov Liars.

When a genuinely conservative movement sees the Republican Party for the lying cheating Lout that it has become and gets a divorce it can stop "socializing" with it and keep it all to business, just business, and then only when it concerns the well-being of the children, Freedom, Faith and Country.

Last time I checked, EVERY leftist regime in the World, Past and Present has ended with a DICTATORSHIP!

If that's what you all want? Move to Venezuela!

Taking my money to provide for those that won't get off their own rearends just ain't right!

Andrew, lets define evil:

Slaughtering 100 million of your own citizens as Communist Russia did is evil. The death of millions in China who are still dying even as I write this is evil. You saying that we shouldn't call things good or evil, or that it's too simplistic makes the first line of #2 resoundingly true. It seems to be a curse of the hyper-educated left to be so smart as to miss the obvious.

As for values the same holds true. Judeo-Christian values are what has made the world what it is today. (I'm sure you'd agree but in the opposite direction...) Those values, which prize human life and dignity above all else are the foundation of every democratic endeavor toward greater liberty that mankind has ever known. You may not ascribe to any religous doctrine but you should thank your lucky stars that others have and do.

One last thing. When Obama apologizes, the world doesn't see him apologizing for President Bush. They see him apologizing for the American way of life. They see it as verification of their twisted logic that the non-violent, self-correcting, individualistic idea of American liberty is simplistic and wrong. If there is anyone to whom he should bow in apology, it should be to us, the proud American people.

Dennis Prager is right in the five points he made in regards to the Leftists. And in response to some of the previous comments I'll present these two quotes..

Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the object worship of the state. It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance. - Winston Churchill

The Modern Liberal believes in the supremacy of the state, thereby rejecting the principles of the Declaration and the order of the civil society, in whole or part. For the Modern Liberal, the individual's imperfection and personal pursuits impede the objective of a utopian state. In this, Modern Liberalism promotes what French historian Alexis de Tocqueville described as a soft tyranny, which becomes increasingly more oppressive, potentially leading to a hard tyranny (some form of totalitarianism). As the word 'liberal' is, in its classical meaning, the opposite of authoritarian, it is more accurate, therefore, to characterize the Modern Liberal as a Statist. ... The Statist ... knows that despite his successful usurpations, enough citizens are still skeptical and even distrustful of politicians and government that he cannot force his will all at once. Thus he marches in incremental steps, adjusting his pace as circumstances dictate. Today his pace is more rapid, for resistance has slowed. ... The Conservative does not despise government. He despises tyranny. This is precisely why the Conservative reveres the Constitution and insists on adherence to it. An 'effective' government that operates outside its constitutional limitations is a dangerous government. ... The Conservative is alarmed by the ascent of a soft tyranny.... He knows that liberty once lost is rarely recovered. He knows of the decline and eventual failure of past republics. And he knows that the best prescription for addressing society's real and perceived ailments is not to further empower an already enormous federal government beyond its constitutional limits, but to return to the founding principles. A free people living in a civil society, working in self-interested cooperation, and a government operating within the limits of its authority promote more prosperity, opportunity, and happiness for more people than any alternative. Conservatism is the antidote to tyranny precisely because its principles are the founding principles."

My only fear is that the backlash from these radical, far Leftist Socialist/Marxists will be the emergence and election of radical, far-Right, Ultra-Nationalists. Neither is conducive to a Constitutional Republic! Stay alert, and listen to what the Right is saying as well.

Dennis Prager is correct. Americans are FINALLY realizing what a collection of insufferable Socialists the Liberal Democrats are. We've been trying to tell people for decades, but apparently it was necessary for the country to SEE the Liberals at work to fully grasp the enormity of their beliefs.

What's astounding to me is the defense of the Left in these comments. Are these people truly so blind that they continue to defend the Left even when utter failure stares right in the face?

The woman who conveniently blames Governor Arnold for California's woes, apparently didn't see any of these problems before the RINO got elected. I have been quite vocal in my criticism of Arnold's policies, because they have been the opposite of Conservative. He's proven to be just another Liberal, which is the last thing CA needed. The woman inarticulately blames the Governor, completely ignoring the union corruption, the high taxes, the massive deficits, the utterly stupid energy policies, even the stunning water mismanagement and more that all contributed to CA's demise. They can't even agree on whether there's a problem, so there's really not much chance of solving it anytime soon.

So naturally, Liberals liked that EPIC FAIL so much they decided to emulate it on the national level. Liberals never met failure they didn't love. So here we have Obama passing unprecedented deficit spending. Funny how people like these commenters rip Bush for spending, but it never dawns on them that Obama's deficits that are many times that of Bush's are even more alarming.

Fortunately, regular Americans ARE waking up. 2010 will be a bloodbath at the ballot box as Americans dismiss Liberals en masse. Democrats will simply have to learn that this is NOT France. Americans are made of different stuff. When the (Socialist) wolves were at the door, France welcomed them in. Americans will turn them into fur coats.

That is, if we can survive that long.

BTW, for the fellow who claimed evil does not exist. It most certainly does, and it's YOU.

The most part of America IS NOT commie, libs,or lefties.

America does not like and will never like these agendas, that is why they all have to lie to get into office.

Frankly, all their ideas and points of view suck. Read the Constitution once, huh?!

Get the hell out of America and go live in Cuba,or N Korea or something, stop messing with OUR, "We The People"'s country, Losers!

I am a Democrat- Liberal Party supporter and I believe in God, I gave up supporting the lying, hypocritical, Pharisaical Conservative party. It was also very clear to me that Sarah Plain's family did not live what she herself had preached to the others too. http://mccainvrsobama.wordpress.com/

One inappropriate graffiti on a Jewish Center wall in Calgary Alberta makes the national news of Canada.. many Palestinian homes torn down in Israel makes very little news, What real unacceptable Hypocrisy. Peace in the middle east is never possible but it is not just the Arabs but the Jews themselves clearly who are part of the unacceptable problem. None of this is politically correct.

US 'dismayed' by Israel's new settlements in Jerusalem Telegraph.co.uk - The White House has said it is dismayed by Israel's decision to build new settler homes in Jerusalem saying it makes it harder to kick-start the peace talks.

Tim, Mark Levin is absolutely right. This is what has been going on and is happening in Europe. I can see how little by little the change is coming about and it is frightening. The system has become already too powerful. It started really going bad in 1989. If you want to read up on it I'll enclose a link. I don't believe this could happen in America, I certainly hope not. I hope that many eyes have opened to see what the Left can destroy!

Thank You for the link to the article Myriam,

what Vladimir Bukovksy points out that has happened and is happening with the EU is comparable to what the Leftists have done and are doing here in the USA.

thenonconformer it all boils down to one truism that I'm sure you've heard but probably refuse to believe.

If the Arabs laid down their weapons there would be peace in the Middle East. If Israel laid down their arms there would be no more Israel.

Look no further then the Gaza Strip. It was handed to the Palestinians on a silver platter. Rather the use it as a base for a state they used it as a base for terrorism.

There will be peace in the Middle East when the Arabs become serious about being peacefull.

Thomas M.

Where do I begin? The comments are all over the place, so here is my take. I don't think I agreed with amending the Constitution to allow naturalized citizens to be President. Also, what President Bush did to "supposidly ruin our status around the world" was partly due to the main stream media and partly because of the snooty Europeans perception of GW Bush. Guess LBJ back in the 60's was more to the Europeans liking...both LBJ and GWB were from Texas.

The liberals have been slowly destroying this country for decades now. First through the public educational system, then the media, next came the government...and you see what the government have been doing now. We need to give the the congress a messgae next year and fire the whole lot of them with our vote.

Andrew, sir. I would politely suggest that you need to study your history more closely. You have to put Sam Adams' quote in context as regards to person, place and time. Those words were addressed to the other members of the Second Continental Congress in 1776 in the debates leading up to the Declaration of Independence. Most of the gentlemen in that Congress, particularly those few who were resistant to a complete break with Britain, had wealth and much to lose should things go badly with the revolution. Sam Adams was addressing those resisters to a Declaration of Independence. He certainly was NOT condemning wealth or capitalism. Sam Adams, a businessman and then a tax collector himself, was one of THE most ardent patriots speaking and acting in opposition to excessive and abusive taxation, as well as a Monarchial (or Oligarchial) government taking every liberty with the rights and property of it's citizens in the colonies. He was great friend of Thomas Paine and wholeheartedly supported the Paines philosophy outlined in the pamphlet "Common Sense." I have no doubt, if Sam Adams were alive today, he would slap across the mouth any man who suggested his words were meant to favor an all powerful government that imposes it's absolute will over the liberty and rightful property of the individual. Rethink your position sir. The evil propagated by governments following the Marxist ideals an all powerful central government exercising the policies of wealth redistribution that you embrace and espouse, far far exceed any wrong done by the American government founded by the men, who along with Samuel Adams, signed that declaration. I swear... The mental illness of Modern Liberalism never ceases to amaze me.

Mark. You have a misconception of what the "Left - Right" continuum looks like in reality.

In truth, Socialist/Marxists and Ultra-Nationalists (or National Socialists - Nazi's and Fascists) are on the far left end of the scale together. All powerful, centralized government. At the far right of the scale would be anarchy, or no government whatsoever. Our Constitutional Republic falls in the middle... or at least it used to. It has been marching drastically to the left of late and stepping all over the Constitution in doing so.

For more clarification, I would suggest the following link to a short video presentation by Dr. Richard A. Gabriel, Professor of History and Politics U.S. Army War College and Professor of Hunanities and Ethics at Daniel Webster College.
