Why the Right Fears Transforming America -- and the Left Seeks It

The giveaway regarding presidential candidate Barack Obama's plans for America was his repeated use of the words "fundamentally transform."
Some of us instinctively reacted negatively -- in fact, with horror -- at the thought of fundamentally transforming America.
The "us" are conservatives.
One unbridgeable divide between left and right is how each views alternatives to present-day America. Those on the left imagine an ideal society that has never existed, and therefore seek to "fundamentally transform" America. When liberals imagine an America fundamentally transformed, they envision it becoming a nearly utopian society in which there is no greed, no racism, no sexism, no inequality, no poverty and ultimately no unhappiness.
Conservatives, on the other hand, look around at other societies and history and are certain that if America were fundamentally transformed, it would become just like those other societies. America would become a society of far less liberty, of ethically and morally inferior citizens and of much more unhappiness. And cruelty would increase exponentially around the world.
Conservatives believe that America is an aberration in human history; that, with all the problems that a society made up of flawed human beings will inevitably have, America has been and remains a uniquely decent society. Therefore, conservatives worry that fundamentally transforming America -- making America less exceptional -- will mean that America gets much worse.
Liberals worry over the opposite possibility -- that America will remain more or less as it is.
Two famous statements encapsulate the operative liberal worldview.
The first was attributed to Robert F. Kennedy by his brother Sen. Edward M. Kennedy:
"There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask, 'Why?' I dream of things that never were, and ask, 'Why not?'"
The other is one of the most popular songs of the last 50 years, John Lennon's "Imagine":
"Imagine there's no heaven. It's easy if you try. No hell below us, above us only sky. Imagine all the people, living for today.
"Imagine there's no countries. It isn't hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion, too, Imagine all the people, living life in peace.
"You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will be as one.
"Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can. No need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man. Imagine all the people, sharing all the world.
"You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one."
Regarding the Kennedy quote, a conservative would respond something like this:
We conservatives look at America and ask, how did something so decent, so different from other societies, ever get created and last over 200 years? Of course, we always seek to improve it. But more than anything else, we seek to preserve it and its core values. We do not "dream of things that never were." We dream the same dream as our American forefathers did -- to maintain a society committed to the values of E Pluribus Unum, Liberty and In God We Trust. As for utopian dreams, we believe they are more likely to result in nightmares -- horrors that would engulf America and the world if America were to be transformed.
To Lennon's song, a conservative would respond:
Lennon's utopia is our dystopia. A world without God to give people some certitude that all their suffering is not meaningless is a nightmare. A world without religion means a world without any systematic way of ennobling people. A world without countries is a world without the United States of America, and it is a world governed by the morally imbecilic United Nations, where mass murderers sit on its "human rights" councils. A world without heaven or hell is a world without any ultimate justice, where torturers and their victims have identical fates -- oblivion. A world without possessions is a world in which some enormous state possesses everything, and the individual is reduced to the status of a serf.
Liberals frequently criticize conservatives for fearing change. That is not correct. We fear transforming that which is already good. The moral record of humanity does not fill us with optimism about "fundamentally transforming" something as rare as America. Evil is normal. America is not.

The obamanation was elected in large measure as American's absolute rejection of Bush's policies. He brought us $12T in national debt, he used his office to pay off Wall Street executives for their greed, he destroyed many rights and protections afforded American citizens under our Constitution, he allowed congressional democrats to create the housing bubble that their law-changes had made into a leveraged house of cards, and he bailed out businesses, abandoning free market principles to save the free market. America needed transformed, back to the principles that had created this nation and made it great. Instead? We got MORE OF THE SAME. Today we have King Louis Hussein and Queen Michele Antoinette telling us night is day, welfare equals jobs, spending into endless debt is prosperity, black-mailing and coercing our enemies is the prelude to peace. Their idea of peace and safety is a secure prison of tyranny for every American citizen. Now it's time for pay back. With a vengeance.

Fundamentally transforming America means enslavement of its citizens. There is no Constitution. There are no constitutional rights. It means there's no limit to the government's power. We have all gotten doses of unlimited power over the last eighteen months. It also means comrade is coming to your neighborhoods in one form or another. It also means the indoctrination of future generations, "Barrack, Barrack Obama umh, umh, umh. Remember that. And with the huge debt he has created it also means our taxes will keep climbing; everyday we get reminders of what's coming. They'll be taxing our gardens shortly.
And now another stimulus. So who really ran the bus into the ditch? Barrack did.

Lennon (both John and Vladimir) preached a Utopian world, but, as with Most Liberal dreamers, they practiced do as I say, not as I do - the phrase from the song "Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can. No need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man. Imagine all the people, sharing all the world." was just part of the preaching that was never followed - I don't recall any good that John Lennon put his possessions to, but believe he protected his copyrights with vigor, which was his right, but showed his hypocrisy.

The neocommies, are first and foremost secular humanists. They're belief that man is the highest form of life is predicated by their non-belief in God.
Secondly, they observe that man is not perfect, however they believe that man can be governed towards perfection via laws and regulations. Sadly, they fail to take into account the very imperfection that they have observed. Said imperfections will lead individuals to chafe under the yoke of law and regulations imposed upon a society by a group of elites. The only way such laws can be effective is through coercion.
The federalist papers consistently warn about the nature of man and all his flaws and failings. It speaks on the pitfalls of other societies, such as the Greek City/States, that fought amongst themselves during the Peloponnesian War. These lessons are lost on those who would try to bring about heaven on earth.

Being from a family of Academics, I can relate to your assessment of the state of academia with total agreement. I even encouraged my Son to complete all his degrees, and, go into the educational field (for reasons that escape me in this latter day). He has been the President of a division of the International Mathematical Association for 9 of the last 10 years (hosted their International Convention last year), yet, still believes that the "Speed of Light" is a barrier that can never be broken. I wonder sometimes whether he's aware that they have slowed the speed of photons to a velocity of 'less than Zero,' and, pushed photons to more than 400 times the speed of light (as of about a year ago).
He now teaches Physics, Computer Science, and, English, reads, writes and teaches 13 different Languages (but, hasn't a clue about the real world), while pushing a left agenda that wreaks of Medieval Science, and, Keynesian economics (Profit is BAD), and, all the while, insisting that his Academic Perks are unimpeachable Rights handed down by Karl Marx.
Someday, I'll work up the nerve, and, ask his Mother where he came from.

Hello America,
Accolades to Mr. Praeger and his America first piece. Liberals will never catch on to what we freedom loving nationalists learned years ago from people that cared for us enough to tell us the the true history of 'God and Country'.
We know our founders like we know our immediate families, for we saw them as the heads of our national household. We also learned that God Jehovah was symbolized by the torch in Lady Liberty's outstretched hand, beckoning the worlds down trodden to let His light guide them to our shores led by the inner core of their being that moves people toward freedom.
That is who we are, and no radical Son of Darkness is ever going to change that.

When Lennon came out with that song I was living in an area where most people supplemented their income by selling a little of this and a little of that.
Being a VietNam veteran, we had some very agitated discussions over what was worth fighting for (war) and what wasn't.
After "Imagine" came out, I asked if they would fight when somebody came along to take away their pot. To a man and a woman, they all said, "Nobody would ever do that."
Keep the populace happy — or stoned -- and you will stay in office. No argument means no opposition.

I believe that Leftists of the academic, privileged, elitist persuasion all grew up on Disneyland. They think that, like Disneyland, everything is supposed to stay the same and be perfect. They, the chosen ones, deserve it.
They whine about man-made global warming and that we have to stop it, but never stop to consider that the history of the earth's climate has been climate change.
Of course, there are all those juicy education grants from leftist politician that really keep the academicians on board.

Lennon was stoned, and shot, No heaven/hell. No God means man is judge, This has been tried time innumerable times throughout all human history, always ending in failure because it requires force.
Elites who think this are naive simpletons.
Conservatives do not want status quo. But change should be.very deliberate, methodical, after extensive and exhaustive analysis of every source of info, and still require 2/3 vote, and even then subject to legal challenge, executive veto, and even repel. Accordingly appropriate. Conservatives are tired of judicial tyranny ane elite executives exercising unconstitutional authority.
We will know we need a new Conctitution when it. Is tested and fails. HasnLt happened yet, but Libs seem determined to rush into that end.

Lennon's song -- and the Left's ideology -- isn't just about Socialism or Collectivism. Mr. Prager has written about this before, and he's right. Nor is he alone in noticing this. Thomas Sowell, Dinesh D'Souza and Evan Sayet are just a few of the many who have made this connection.
The key line, and the keystone of Leftist thought, is "nothing to kill or die for." What kind of life contains nothing for which you would willingly die? That does not speak of love or passion or duty or any of the other things that make Humanity something truly special. Nothing to kill or die for means nothing worth defending or protecting.
We see this increasingly in Left-programmed young people these days. Some years ago, a commotion outside my apartment brought me before two young couples, squealing and cowering in the hallway. They insisted there was a "monster" trying to attack them. It turned out to be a bat, and not a very big one. But the point is, the males were HIDING behind their girlfriends and refused to even attempt to deal with the bat. Their protective instinct was totally absent.
That's what Liberals want. People so morally bankrupt, so empty and self-centered, that they will not stand up for each other or themselves. They'll just selfishly pursue their own pleasures without regard to morality, decency, or societal mores.
Nothing to kill or die for, not even an all-intrusive tyrannical government that tries (but fails) to be everything to everyone, to take care of every need, and relieve us of the duty to support ourselves.
What's frightening is, we're most of the way there. The Liberals have nudged us, inch by inch, clear over the horizon from a society full of morally decent people to one of selfish knuckleheads who don't care about anything but their immediate gratification. This is what Glenn Beck and others have been talking about: restoring Honor. Without that, we can elect all the Republicans we can find, and it will simply be a slower road to Liberal victory. The only way to stop them -- really stop them -- is to utterly reject their ideology. And the only way to do that is to re-create the same morally decent society the Founders believed was essential to liberty.

Then of course there are the rest of us peons that live well beyond the ivy (or is it ivory) towers of the elites. The end game is of course "social equality" or as I am wont to say "shared misery"
The only joy I ever get, and seldom at that, is when one of the neocommies acts so shocked as to why he or she is unemployed, has little hope of future employment, and is forced to take handouts from the feds, just to maintain a basic existence. This type is still waiting for his/hers stimulus check....

Micheal/SSEC, you are absolutely right! What you are said my husband and I have been saying for some time now. We may have to start from the beginning with a new constitution and thereby preserving the old. In grammer and middle schools they have no hit policys in the extream and won't let the kids play sports or games that have winners and loosers! When I was in school, many years ago, we were taught sports and games from the first grade on to learn how to win and how to lose. The schools are emasculating the males on a daily basis and college professors are even worse. Most of our lawyers are taught by social progressives and who goes to Washington to serve in congress or, God help us, as president. Now the same ones taught from an esrly age not to fight ever and the same ones taught in higher education by social progressives or outright communists! Our country is being overun by illegial aliens while congress sits on their collective rear ends and does nothing! Most of the things they have done and the things they have failed to do should be seen as sedition if you will treason! I ascribe to the notion if you won't help at least do no harm! Read the Declaration where it says "When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another....reqires that they should declare the caused which impel them to the separation." Read it in it's entirety to better understand what it says then think about where we are today!!

Lennon was a talented songwriter, but if you consult the historical record, you will notice that he did NOT give away all his possessions or the millions of dollars he earned with his music. As is typical of elitists, he was mainly interested in *everyone else* giving away their property.

Vimum - you misreprestnt the author's words by using selective editing. That's a polite way of saying either you can't read well or are rail splitting intentially.
There are ethically and morally inferior citizens in many countries including this one. The author's point is that societies which promote and practice low humanist principles tend to be more oppresive politically, stratified financially, and cruel to their own citizens as well as neighbors. While not perfect this nation remains the light of the world in terms of liberty and unity; ergo E Pluribus Unum. The current administration, and it's minions, threaten that every day.
