A Battle the President Can't Win

· Saturday, February 4, 2012

His decision on Catholic charities makes Romney's big gaffe look trivial.

What a faux pas, how inept, how removed from the essential realities of America. Yes, I'm referring to President Obama. But let's do Mitt Romney first.

He's taken heavy fire for his interview with CNN's Soledad O'Brien, in which he said, "I'm not concerned about the very poor."

Every criticism has been true. It was politically inept, playing into stereotypes about Republicans and about his own candidacy. It was Martian-like in its seeming remove from the concerns of everyday citizens. We're in a recession here! It was at odds both with longtime American tradition and with rising conservative concern over the growth and changing nature of what used to be called the underclass.

So: inept.

Advice? Treat the mistake as an opportunity. First, admit the blunder. A political communications expert would add, "And move on." But don't. Use this mistake, and others -- "I like being able to fire people" -- as the basis for a true, thoughtful and extended statement that will allow people more deeply into the mind of Mitt Romney. Call it "Let me tell you about my gaffes." Use it to deepen people's understanding of your views not only on poverty but on the whole American picture.

Three reasons to do this. First, the networks, in their Romney gaffe reels, will have to use some of the lengthier address for the appearance of fairness. Second, it's good to dwell on this problem now because Democrats want it to go away. That's because they want to bring it back fresh in the fall, when people have forgotten it. The third reason has to do with still-widespread conservative unease with what Mr. Romney really thinks and why he thinks it. He should set himself to giving a fuller picture of his thoughts.

* * *

Which leads us to the Republican establishment, and how it feels about Mr. Romney.

That establishment is not what it was decades ago, when it was peopled by seasoned veterans who made decisions and got people in line. That's gone. What has replaced it is a loose confederation of groups and professionals -- current and former elected officials and their staffs, activists, the old party machinery, bundlers and contributors, journalists, radio and TV stars, mostly but not exclusively based in Washington.

The great myth of the election year is that they are for Mitt Romney. They are not. They are almost all against Newt Gingrich because they know him, they've worked with him. But they mostly do not love Mr. Romney.

The establishment didn't get its candidate: Mitch Daniels or Jeb Bush, John Thune or Paul Ryan, Haley Barbour or Chris Christie. It is, secretly, as bereft as some of the grass roots.

Why doesn't the establishment like Mr. Romney? Because they fear he won't win, that he'll get clobbered on such issues as Bain, wealth, taxes. Because when they listen to him, they get the impression he's reciting lines his aides came up with in debate prep. Because if he wins, they're not sure he'll have a meaning or mandate.

But mostly because his insides are unknown to them. They don't know what's in there. They fear he hasn't absorbed any philosophy along the way, that he'll be herky-jerky, unanchored, merely tactical as president. And they think that now of all times more is needed. They want to reform the tax system and begin reining in the entitlement spending that is bankrupting us. They don't read him as the guy who can perform those two Herculean jobs, each of which will demand first-rate political talent. And shrewdness. And guts.

Mr. Romney doesn't have the establishment in his pocket. He needs to win it. All the more reason for him to get serious now. If he is serious.

This is the authentic sound of the establishment: At a gathering in Washington last week, I spoke to a grand old man of the party who enjoyed high and historic appointed position. "Where is the Republican Party right now?" I asked.

"Waiting for Jeb," he said. Waiting for rescue.

That's what Mitt Romney's up against, not Newt.

* * *

But the big political news of the week isn't Mr. Romney's gaffe, or even his victory in Florida. The big story took place in Washington. That's where a bomb went off that not many in the political class heard, or understood.

But President Obama just may have lost the election.

The president signed off on a Health and Human Services ruling that says that under ObamaCare, Catholic institutions -- including charities, hospitals and schools -- will be required by law, for the first time ever, to provide and pay for insurance coverage that includes contraceptives, abortion-inducing drugs and sterilization procedures. If they do not, they will face ruinous fines in the millions of dollars. Or they can always go out of business.

In other words, the Catholic Church was told this week that its institutions can't be Catholic anymore.

I invite you to imagine the moment we are living in without the church's charities, hospitals and schools. And if you know anything about those organizations, you know it is a fantasy that they can afford millions in fines.

There was no reason to make this ruling -- none. Except ideology.

The conscience clause, which keeps the church itself from having to bow to such decisions, has always been assumed to cover the church's institutions.

Now the church is fighting back. Priests in an estimated 70% of parishes last Sunday came forward to read strongly worded protests from the church's bishops. The ruling asks the church to abandon Catholic principles and beliefs; it is an abridgment of the First Amendment; it is not acceptable. They say they will not bow to it. They should never bow to it, not only because they are Catholic and cannot be told to take actions that deny their faith, but because they are citizens of the United States.

If they stay strong and fight, they will win. This is in fact a potentially unifying moment for American Catholics, long split left, right and center. Catholic conservatives will immediately and fully oppose the administration's decision. But Catholic liberals, who feel embarrassed and undercut, have also come out in opposition.

The church is split on many things. But do Catholics in the pews want the government telling their church to contravene its beliefs? A president affronting the leadership of the church, and blithely threatening its great institutions? No, they don't want that. They will unite against that.

The smallest part of this story is political. There are 77.7 million Catholics in the United States. In 2008 they made up 27% of the electorate, about 35 million people. Mr. Obama carried the Catholic vote, 54% to 45%. They helped him win.

They won't this year. And guess where a lot of Catholics live? In the battleground states.

There was no reason to pick this fight. It reflects political incompetence on a scale so great as to make Mitt Romney's gaffes a little bitty thing.

There was nothing for the president to gain, except, perhaps, the pleasure of making a great church bow to him.

Enjoy it while you can. You have awakened a sleeping giant.

That sleeping giant, along with many others, needs to be awakened, and it is a positive thing that this leopard has now shown a few more of his socialist spots. That would just be the beginning of his usurpation of freedoms that Americans have always taken for granted. It turns out they are now under assault from within from the very government that is sworn to defend them.

Only a dreamer would think that politics and voting for one party over another doesn't matter. It doesn't matter as much as it could and should but it does matter in the big fundamental things that are right out in the open.

I hope that the large number of liberal Catholics won't view this mandatory requirement as something they support because it benefits them personally, while ignoring the greater issue of government control over Church policy, -just like in Cuba and China.

Peggy Noonan has nailed it. There was no other reason for the ruling other than ideology. This incident or revelation defines more of the fundamental change behind the progressive movement in the transformation of America. For three years this movement has asserted its agenda. Much of the nation has learned the intent and the reality before them. Hopefully, what has now occurred with this ruling, even non-catholics should take notice. This amounts to persecution against faith and reveals more the secular, socialist nature of the present ruling class.

Essentially, on an almost daily basis, the change agents are on their mission. As each day goes, we are losing a little more of our country's soul to a humanism that will lead to its only conclusion: tyranny. If more of the people's power is subverted to the state we will become weaker to be able to confront it.

Our counter to this real danger must not wait until the elections. Our movement needs to stand up in all manner of peaceful protest to strengthen our resolve, to give our legitimacy real hope.

Not since the founding revolution and the civil war have we been faced with the loss of our liberty foundation. We have a lot to lose and as many of you know as I do, too many do not even know what is going down. Grow the concern; it is warranted. Our founders gave us all that we would need to preserve liberty-not only in a Constitution but also in their resolve sacrifice in blood for posterity.

Can't help getting continually fired up. Let's all do the same. Unity.

RE: Mitt - if he wins the nomination he needs a man such as Marco Rubio or Allen West to run as his VP. Both men are articulate, not white and would be perfect in terms of succession planning for 2020 and beyond.

RE: Barack & Cathy's Road Show - if only the GOP will use it until people can repeat it in their sleep and the media will report it, the GOP will have a much better chance at getting the Catholic vote.

This is a direct blow at the freedom of conscience clause of the Constitution for every American, not just Catholic Americans! This is in effect an EDICT coming down from the heights of the ideology of the Obama Administration Obama and ilk should be finished off in the 2012 election if for no other reason than they are acting like Chicago thugs trampling the rights of every American. The contraceptive theme being placed on this fight is planned to obfuscate the real attack on religious freedom. The media is complisant with this slant and as always doing the bidding of the liberal left.

Noonan is right! This is going to decide the 2012 election more than any other factor. We freedom loving Americans have to get this one right! Vote Republican!and preserve American freedom ...for all!

I'm more pessimistic. The press won't mention it till they have to. Then Obama will back out of it. Then the press will ignore it. He's no fool. He's a tyrant and a clever one. Like a bat, he hears echoes and adjusts.

What an absolutely horrendous decision! Where does this administration come up with these ideas? Is it possible that they could not foresee the repercussions that would result from such a decision or don't they care? They have indeed awakened a sleeping giant and as for Obama, I think he just lost the election! God indeed moves in mysterious ways...

Arrogance, as well as ideology.

Remember the tactics of the left. They just keep pushing harder and harder, to see how far we will let them go. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If we push back they adjust their tactics and push in another way.

Like a rising tide of floodwater, they flow over, around, or under any obstacle. They never stop. Their determination to impose their will is absolute, every waking minute of their lives. We must be more resolved than they are. Prepare.

Well, why in the hell were Catholics in bed with a liberal, who thinks late term abortions are just dandy, in the first place?

Could it be all that socialist crapola from the pulpit, which stopped me from going to church years ago?

Now all those bishops - hands spread apart, mouths agape mummbling whathappened????

Lie with a whore you get screwed, morons - get a clue.

I'm with mmccrindle, "What were they thinking in 2008?"

Well, you voted for Obama in 2008 to show you weren't a racist, now, in 2012, vote against Obama to show you're not an idiot.

Not a week goes by without this sorry administration giving us another opening to attack. Fast and Furious, all of the green failures, Biden mocking Indian people, this attack on the Catholic Church, dietary facism, bogus unemployment figures, we can all think of at least five. When are we going to hear our candidates hammering this collection of fools and their leader with these facts? Obama is extremely beatable, but so was Clinton please folks, don't give this clown a second term!

Why weren't the Catholics who voted for Obama paying attention in 2008? You would have seen this coming. Thanks alot! Obama only believes in one religion. Big Government.

Ironic, isn't it, how muslims were allowed out because of religious objections but not Catholics? No prejudice on the part of the administration on this one.

Not two months ago we were hearing the annual "Separation of Church and State" re Christmas decorations, songs, etc.

Where is that same outrage now when it really needs to be loud and long. This is another trampling of the First Amendment by this bunch of slimes.

JTG--I agree with your assessment of Obama and Sibelius. She has nothing to lose, Obumpter has everything. Just to think, He wants four more to complete the destruction he started 3years ago. He will unless America wakes up.

Everyone knows that Romney didn’t mean to say he didn’t care about the poor, anymore than Obama meant to say 57 states. But opponents in both parties are pouncing, pretending he meant what it sounds like, because that’s good to spin to the voters. And, no, I’m not a Romney supporter, but not because of this, or Bain, or that he likes to fire people—taken out of context, but boy do we need a lot of firings in Washington. What I think he meant and should have said is, “The poor have a safety net, and the rich don’t need help. But if we don’t stop the three-year slide into poverty, or the safety net won’t hold, because the economy will collapse.” I will link to this from my Old Jarhead blog.

Per Noonan, Catholics voted 54% to 45% for Obama in 2008. This begs the question: WHY?

Did they believe he would get the US out of wars in the middle-east? Did they believe he would be deliver a tax cut to 95% of Americans? Did they believe he would cut the deficit in half in his first term? Did they believe his government run health care would fix things?

Apparently, there were millions of Americans taking stupic pills in 2008 OR that vote was simply an ANTI-BUSH vote and McCain was seen as more Bush.

"To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical. "

---Thomas Jefferson

Americans voted for TYRANNY in 2008 and got it. As HL Mencken would say, we're getting it "good and hard." The Democrats started with Obamacare that nobody wanted... then piled on with bailouts and stimulus pork.

Everyone knew in 2008 that Obama would push the abortion lobby's agenda and force everyone into their "choice" on the issue. Obama's government health plan was so predicable, Catholics should have seen this coming.

Obviously, the United States Constitution defines a Republic, but in practice we're acting like it's a democracy (which always morphs into tyranny).

H.L. Mencken had it right: "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it, good and hard."

Obama has, also, offended another group of voters who had supported him; The Otrhodox Jewish vote. Orthodoxy prohibits abortion in the same way as tha Catholic Church prohibits it.

I hope that he takes a stand against entitlements (yeah, right) so that he can lose all the voters at once.

First off, I am not a Catholic but I know quite a few and if they go to war over this I'll be there beside them. What else can you expect from a president, and I use that term loosley, who has multiple choice answer boxes to check off?

Perhaps he (Obama)expected the Catholics to wait in the White House kitchen with the Israeli diplomats. He got what he wanted and now its time. "Under the bus with you too!"

The only surprise is that the American Public is surprised. You got what you voted for!
