Culture Challenge of the Week: Campus Bias
Last week we headed south to launch our daughter on the next phase of her life: college. It was wonderful to see her eyes twinkling with excitement and expectant hope for the future. We have confidence in her strength of character and strong sense of vales, and know she chose her college for all the right reasons. But we still worked hard to prepare her for the reality that, on most college campuses, the prevailing orthodoxy seeks to challenge and even opposes both Christian values and conservative principles.
Let me give you a few examples of what your son or daughter might encounter.
A recent survey at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. found that in the last election 92% of faculty donations were to Democratic candidates. The professors’ leftwards leanings influenced the courses available to students—it’s easier to find courses on gay films, minority cultures, and feminist theory than on the classics of Western Civilization. Even in southern Virginia, 82% of Virginia Tech professors supported Democratic candidates. And at Texas’ Southern Methodist University, home to the Bush Presidential Library, liberal student organizations outnumber conservative groups by five to one. Such odds are common across the country.
Colleges typically send summer reading lists to incoming freshman, encouraging them to read books considered foundational to their education. The 2010 summer reading lists were dominated by selections from the liberal thought police: the top two categories were "multiculturalism, immigration and racism" and "environmentalism, animal rights and food." The report from the National Association of Scholars said the selected books foreshadow what students can expect to encounter in class: attitudes that are “anti-Western, anti-business, multicultural, environmentalist and alienated.”
And then there are the freshman orientation programs that require everything from gay role-playing to graphic “safe sex” discussions. At Yale University, peer “health” educators advise students on where to get free condoms (Yale gave out over 14,000 free condoms in 2009) and how to use condoms and dental dams during oral sex—and that all happens even before the school’s annual “Sex Week” begins.
How to Save Your Family and College-Bound Kids
It’s crucial to take the time to understand the college landscape. Three great resources for insight on course offerings, dorm environment, and the intangibles of the college experience from a more conservative perspective are CampusReform.Org and College Guide.org and the website of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. (Isi.org)
Evaluate the students as much as the courses. Peers can easily reinforce or break down what you have taught your child. A wise college selection process includes considering how easy it will be to find like-minded friends. Our daughter, for instance, spent a lot of time exploring campus ministries before making her final selection of a college with several strong Christian student organizations. She even made it a priority to participate in some of their meetings as part of her campus visits. Such investigation is important for more than just the friendships your child will make. A 2009 Harris poll shows that among recently married couples, the top three “offline” ways they met were through work, friends, or college.
Finally, stay connected to your child. Help your son or daughter locate a strong church that has a vibrant college program. Attend services with them each time you visit. It’s also vital to pray for them like you never have before, and let them know that you are. Make it a point to talk at least once a week so you can share their excitement and challenges in real time, and detect early if there are signs of trouble.
And don’t forget to write. Yes, old-fashioned hand-written letters that are filed with encouragement, reaffirmations of the truths you taught them when they were young, and clear declarations of your unending love. When you take the initiative to speak form your heart on a consistent basis, they will be better prepared to fend off attacks and cling to what they know to be true.

NOT ME. I never suggested that my children go to "college". Better they work and get "sensibility that comes from work" then to "subject them" to the "wolves".
The "intimidation of the crowd" in such a setting as "college", is too overwhelming. I would suggest at this time, with the "wolves and vultures circling" to devour the young, we'd be better to keep our young people "in common sense situations".
Colleges and Universities are notorious for "destroying the young people".
Perhaps, there is a "college" that would not "corrupt and destroy the souls of the young" but that would be an "exception to the rule". Walk circumspectly.

Demonization of opponents is a fundamental characteristic of the left. It was also Hitler's most successful tactic in creating the Third Reich and plunging the world into total war. Expect the same result this century.

Heading back to college after 3 yrs of military service gave me a leg up against the liberal professors. I especially enjoyed wearing my Army emblosed shirts in the front row of lectures.

Good for you, Kevin. You have the "authority" to be in the "front row" and how can the "wicked" gainsay your sacrifice.
I believe you are ready for "college". Do damage to the enemy that is "domestic" as you did to the enemy that was "foreign" in the battlefield.
May the Lord, the master of Armies, give you what you need to possess the land. To God be the Glory.

This has been going on for a long time. We took our son to college in 1985 and were told in parent orientation that some of their beliefs would change and they would be coming out with some new ideas. How little did we really understand that. Our son went to college as a Christian and came out not believing and with a whole new mindset.

Good article...but why do Americans that claim to be Christian continue to support education that goes against what they believe to be the truth? Why do we not have institutions that teach correctly? I think that we do. There are numerous accredited Christian universities that can prepare a child for the same careers as the secular ones. Should we help them by giving them our money, or risk our children coming home with different views then when they left? Is it for the money?? Will your child be better off financially? As a Christian I would rather have a child develop spiritual maturity while learning his vocation for lesser money than to sacrifice his beliefs on the altar of riches and being subjected to a liberal, godless education.

There's a BIG difference between this generation and mine. When we went to college, we learned to challenge authority, to ask questions and get answers, and to mobilize to stop the government - specifically to get out of the war in Vietnam. We learned from Watergate, Nixon, and SE Asia. Today? We have a generation of politically correct sycophants that grow up tellin' Massah jus' what he wanna hear so's to get that paycheck. Don't be surprised at the outcome. When people grow a brain and a backbone that connects with it - we might actually return this country to where it never should have left. But there might have to be a lot of guts spilled doing it.

And I'll also add the fact that if we don't there'll be a lot more guts spilled than if we do. Sheep die a lot faster than lions and eagles.

In regard to the proposed NYC mosque and the resistance of many to its construction, why is it a problem for people to realize that we are asked to tolerate a religious philosophy that calls for the death of non Muslims? They are our enemies, not our friends. If they are peace loving people, why don't they straighten out their own house and subdue these shameful members?

Why is it that Christians are so self-centered that they talk as if liberals only target THEM? Why can't Christians take just a little time to actually think about how they are not the only conservatives in America?
If Christians would only stop wailing and moaning for just a few seconds about their plight in politically correct places like our schools, universities, media and government, they would realize that it is simply not all about them. Once Christians actually recognize that they are an integral part of a bigger whole that is America, the liberals who shoot at them now freely can in turn be shot quite handily with bigger, truly American guns.
Christians absolutely need to start thinking like Americans if they want any meaningful changes in the direction our national culture has taken. The rest of us conservatives don't need to accept views unique to Christians to defeat liberalism, but it sure would help if Christians made it easier by talking and acting like Americans first.
Memo to Christians: stop acting with the same insular self-centeredness of liberals. Open your eyes a lot wider to take in the freedom of what it means to be American and stand on that ground firmly with the rest of us. If you insist on being isolated because you place your own interests and beliefs first, then you will continue to be isolated in your certain marginalization and defeat by liberalism. That is an unnecessary and complete waste of your spirit and energy in achieving a true reclamation of our American culture.
Wake up and start being the Americans you already are and should be to the rest of us. All of us might reclaim a better America if you do.

Sunforester doesn't realize that Christianity is the origin of American philosophy, in the sense of the traditional values that Americans have always held: free enterprise, personal responsibility/liberty, soberness, obedience to authority, honesty, property rights, heterosexual marriage, monogamy, even our form of government are all based on the clear teachings of Judao-Christian scriptures. Christianity has been the rock on which this nation is anchored since its begiinning days. We now have many competing wrongheaded philosophies whose adherents have been trying to cut the rope attached to that anchor - those are the ones we all should fight, whether we are Christians or not. But, make no mistake about it - they want to kill Christianity first and foremost, for it casts a bright light on all their nefarious plans, and they much prefer the darkness.

This week I had a discussion with three young men who "think" they would "do better" with school, both high school and college, if exposed to public education at its "finest". So, I proceeded to tell them a few things I experienced in college, waaaay back in the 70s:
Professors that preyed sexually on both girls and boys.
A homosexual professor that made it virtually impossible for a girl to get a good grade in his English class.
A professor who plopped a tape recorder down in front of the class and walked out so he could do something "more important"... daily.
Seven girls that ended up pregnant on my dorm floor within one month of the beginning of SUMMER SCHOOL....
On and on it could go. To make it worse, I actually sought out support from the Baptist Student Union and was snobbishly ignored. (Some help there!)
I know it is WORSE now. If you feel you MUST send your children to these leftist propaganda houses, then good luck with them retaining a Christian conservative mindset... And to think they'll come out with twisted views and thousands of dollars of debt, all ready for American life as we have grown to know it. LOL

I completely agree with Sunforester. I am Jewish and am so sick of the Christians shoving their religion down my throat. Many people vote Democrat just for this reason. There are many other religions and beliefs in this country besides Christianity.
Women want the freedom over their bodies, how dare anyone say otherwise. People in this country want freedom from big government and freedom from big religion. America is about being free!
If the Christians take over the Republican Party again then the Democrats will be a force that will rule this country.

My daughter told me that one of her class assignments as a junior in college was to 'find the origin of the F word.' Unbelieveable. How would that assignment prepare my daughter for the adult working world? All it did was reinforce what Hollywood has preached -- that it is a common, acceptable, everyday expression. Sickening.

One excellent way to help prepare young people for entering colleges and universities is to send them to Summit Ministries in Manitou Springs, Colorado, for a two-week session in how to recognize differing worldviews and how to defend the Biblical one. CHeck it out at www.summit.org

My college student is in an Ethics class that is taught by a pregnant lesbian with another 4 yrs old at home. He got in a discussion with her about progressivism the other day while helping her move some desks. I was very proud of three things: 1. He was helping a pregnant woman move furniture because it was the right thing to do and 2. He had a discussion with her, not a debate, not an argument, and he learned a lot about her as a person and her educational background. and 3. He sees through the progressive bias she presents as ethics and is determined to do his best to present truth to the class when he can.
If your kids are not prepared to battle this stuff before they go to college, they should not be going...or at least you should not be surprised when they come home a lesbian or a progressive. Sad thing is we are spending a lot of money for him to attend a class that's sole purpose seems to be to undermine America, his faith and his faimily. Although he sees it and is not being affected by it, it is a shame that he has to pay to attend a class that he basically has to ignore. Weird times.
