The Palin Perplexity
· Tuesday, November 23, 2010
Sarah Palin is the best thing that's happened lately to the right and the left, both at the same time. Much of the right pays her obeisance for mobilizing the troops and smart-alecking the left -- which in turn loves her for splitting (so the left hopes) the right over her personality and track record.
The best way for a conservative to incur a black eye and a "country club Republican" label is to suggest that the mother of Bristol Palin and host of "Sarah Palin's Alaska" hasn't it in her to lead the world's -- still, we hope -- leading nation.
Not requiring a black eye at the moment, I decline to enter the contest. There's a basic question to consider, all the same: Must we take it for granted that a best-selling author and all-purpose celeb has presidential aspirations we are obliged to sort through?
Might it not prove the case that she's merely enjoying celebrity and the accompanying paychecks and royalties? The ex-governor's nimble instincts don't -- yet -- prove anything about her save that she's quicker on her feet than Bristol; with a matchless eye for what was once called the main chance; not to mention, as Americans used to say, the nerve of an Army mule.
If we grant her celebrity status, that takes care of a lot of problems. We don't have to psychoanalyze her constantly, as if she were Barack Obama. Conservatives can settle back and let her give speeches (which she does with enormous enthusiasm, if less-than-great pitch and intonation) for any candidate she wants to endorse. There's really no Palin problem in this event. She's a free lance, like the roving European knights whose military careers gave rise to the name. A free lance is fine.
What if she does, though, after all, want to be president? The Sarah conundrum rises at this point to a higher, more feverish pitch. I might circle around the matter cautiously and suggest that the pathway to the White House is less promising than it once was for inspirational speakers with great life stories. A principle reason for this is Barack H. Obama.
Once bitten, twice shy, is the folk adage. A couple of years ago, the public -- especially that portion susceptible to the political love bug -- fell hard for a barely known Illinois senator, one Mr. Obama. He was too cool for words -- an opinion that everyone now is sure he shares. Two years later ... well, why go into what everyone knows?
The parallels between Obama and Palin are marked: thin resumes, large talents for getting attention. Some of the backlash against Palin's overnight fame actually resembles the sniping and disdain that has followed Obama since the election. Whereas once he could do no wrong, he now seems incapable -- as the left sees it -- of doing any right.
Palin comes on, politically, like the upperclassman a sorority pledge met late one night at the "Twilight" costume party: best abs ever and, oh, those discreet tattoos! -- but will he still respect me in the morning?
There is no reason to suspect Palin of attempting a con job, saying what she says, in the way she says it, for mere personal aggrandizement. On the other hand, before we hand over the country to her, we need to take the lady's measure in terms of character, intelligence and skills. We need to know her philosophy, her ideals -- not just in glittering outline but instead in specifics. How would she save Medicare? How would she deal with Putin, Karzai, Chavez and Ahmadinejad? How would she like America to integrate newcomers into its national life? How would she have us protect unborn life?
Voters need not to guess at these things; they need clear understandings from candidate A or B, or P, as to what proposals they would advance.
President Palin? We can't rule that out in the long run. But please not in 2012. There isn't time for that -- not a fourth of it, not a tenth. She needs to grow on us as our problems, our challenges, our opportunities grow on her.

Well, let's see, got a corrupt Legislature? Palin will kick 'em into the street...GOP? Democrook? She doesn't care who or what you are, if you're not doing your job, or, doin' a job that don't need doin', or, stealing us blind...you're gone.
Putin? Karzai? Chavez? Ahmadinejad? She'll spit in one hand and slap th' crap out of 'em while they're watching the hand she spit in.
Medicare? No question...there's really no answer, but, I'm bettin' she'll have better proposals than we've seen so far.
Newcomers? You seem to have missed the idea that it's not our job, not America's job, to "integrate Newcomers" into our National life: it's their job to find a place in the sun...to BECOME Americans.
Do I think she is ready to handle the job? Name someone, other than Ronald Reagan, who actually was ready when they stepped up to Bat. It's not a job that one can ever really be prepared for, educated for, or, trained in advance to handle every crisis he/she will face.
Having said that, I would still much rather see Mrs Palin serve at least one term as Vice President, before ascending to the Oval Office. I'd vote for a Bill Whittle/Sarah Palin Ticket, if someone could actually convince Mr. Whittle to run. We need another Thomas Jefferson in Washington, and, Bill Whittle is as close as we're ever going to experience in this lifetime.

I feel comfortable in knowing that Palin would make the correct decisions. After all, it's the general movement to the right that we want and I know that I would get that from her. I'd first like to see her as the RNC chair and then VP before running for presidency.

I have to agree with Mr. Murchison. What we know about Sarah is that she is a tireless cheerleader for conservatives - but we also know she resigned as governor of Alaska halfway into her term. That resignation would work very much against her and the left would not hesitate for a second to capitalize on that.
I worry that her ability to inspire a crowd will be mistaken for the ability to lead the country. They are not the same thing. Don't get me wrong, I think she is bright, articulate and has done an enormous amount for the conservative movement. However, aside from the fact that I too find her resume a bit thin, everything that we have complained about with Obama will be thrown up in spades about Palin. She now has a reality show - which is fine if you want to be a celebrity but I don't see the rest of the country as viewing that as something a serious candidate would do.
And while her numbers are through the roof with Republicans, they are low for all other demographics. She would have to convert an enormous amount of voters for her to win a presidential election.
I must say too that comparing her to Reagan is misguided at best. She is no Reagan. Sorry but you will never convince me of that. Reagan had multiple terms as the governor of CA, has countless articles, delivered hundreds of radio addresses and was brilliant in the ways of politics and history and governance. While Palin may have the potential for that - she definitely isn't there.
I pray that she passes on a run this time out - if she doesn't we may very well end up with yet another dem in the White House.

Fortunately, we do not have to make that decision just yet. I like much about Sarah Palin. But, as for whether I want her for our next president, it depends on who else is in the race at the time and what we can know about all of them. That is why we have Primaries.
I like her; but, she is not the only person out there who I like. I'm not certain, however, that her TV program about Alaska was a good idea.

Hello America,
As much as I like and admire the chutpah in Sister Sarah Palin, I am with Annie. She doesn't have the political credentials of a Ronald Reagan, although she quite Reaganesque . . . that gives her the potential for greatness.
The Vice Presidency, once again would be a great stepping stone for her and our future without progressives. We need a seasoned political veteran to lambast the Bama in a heads up brawl in 2012, with Ms. Palin as a second.
Had it not been for this virtual unknown in 2008, I don't think Big John would have come as close as he did to pulling it off. Compromising mavericks are out. We need a straight on red white and blue Reagan style conservative to fill the post this time around.
I want to see Sarah Palin in the White House for two terms, but not before she is seasoned and ready to face head on the firestorm that is coming at us at home and abroad. I want a person in the White House, who is she decides the UN is not good for the United States, they will be given their walking papers and don't let the door hit you in the rear end. I thinks Sister Sarah with a compliant red white and blue conservative congress could pull that off.
I like Christie, Pawlen and Thune a lot, but they still don't have the man about the world credentials that it is going to take to make the necessary sacrifices to bring us back to our once greatest nation in history status.
Brother Mike Huckabee, though a fine Christian brother compromises to much for my satisfaction. The two that would be formidable, Newt and Mitt are up to the task . . . BUT. They are establishment guys that give in to easily to the siren song of Washington, which is why we are in the dire straits we are in.
Obama came in with a very far left fringe agenda in mind. We have suffered mightily for being taken in by this greenhorn from the mean political streets of Chicago. Once bitten twice shy, as proved this past Election Day, but we have two more years of this Commie first, last and always. He has an executive order pen that can only immerse us deeper in the septic tank.
My favorite, though she too isn't well seasoned, but she is super savvy is Rep. Michelle Bachman. I think she would make a formidable president. That is why I favor Team Bachman/Palin in the year of the conservative woman.
Women are soft for their men. They are straight up cat fighters in the tradition of the big cats in a one on one no holds barred. They go for the jugular where men spar trying to wear down their opponent . . . Margaret Thatcher proved that. We need a battler instead of those who spar in 2012.

But in a way, elections really are popularity contests. TV has too much to do with it. I used to think William Shatner would be a strong candidate. Wouldn't everyone recognize Captain Kirk in the White House?
So we're still looking for one.

These are the sort of questions and musing that we need so that we can determine who will be the leaders of conservatism going into 2012. But, I take offense at the authors suggestion that Palin's political record is ANYTHING akin to Obama's. She successfully transformed Alaska in her first tenure as Governor, she was run out of office by the petty lawsuits filed to defame and distract her work. I have great respect for her for putting Alaska's needs for solvent government ahead of what, even here, is labeled "quitting" on Alaska. She is a woman of extreme integrity, she is NOT of the elite establishment, as shown by B. Bush's recent condemnation of her, and she does have a plan. If we the people will listen, instead of slandering, we might just hear it! As to the claim of The Patriot Post being a "highly acclaimed" advocate of Essential Liberty, the jury is still out for me after stumbling onto this sight through a facebook posting. We shall see.

I'm sick and tired of this "she's not qualified" argument. She had more political experience than BO going in, and yet nobody here seems to whine about THAT.
People used to say Reagan was a joke too, "oh, he's just an actor," etc. I bet they felt pretty damn foolish once his term was done. But here we go again, she's on tv, she's this, she's that... shut up, all of you!
In this last election, she was on the trail supporting Tea Party candidates and conservatives. Romney? Silent. Huckabee? Silent. Sarah does the heavy lifting then everyone kicks her to the curb.
Do you know why she left the governorship? Because of an idiotic Alaksa law, many friviolous lawsuits had been brought against her by partisans trying to take her down... suits that would have cost the state millions to defend. Rather than hurt her state, she decided to take away the target, herself. Is her noble gesture recognized? No. The whiners on our side once again misconstrue it as "quitting." Yeah, and a RINO is a "moderate," right?
You really want another Reagan, it's Sarah. A true conservative? Sarah.
You want another good ole boy clubber? Pick Romney. Another RINO? Pick Huckabee. Another of both? Pick Newt. Go ahead, play the old game, and we'll lose again to the more media savvy Dems.
But if you really want bold colors, as Reagan said, you better be ready to pick boldly and fight boldly. I hope Sarah runs, and I hope Bachmann is her VP tap.

Before you become too mesmerized by Palin's aura take a close look at New Jersey's Christie - now there's a comer! And, oh, by the way, as to the person we place in the White House having "man about the world credentials" I'm not quite sure what is meant by that in the context it's presented, but let me say this; I've had quite enough of Washington politicians who are concerned with global issues. I want a President whose first and overriding concern is the United States - period! It's my considered opinion that we're mesmerized by this global perspective as it works to further the progressive agenda. This Country became what it is (was) as a result on focusing on ourselves! We don't have to fear anyone or anything if we just stick to our guns (and we've got the biggest one's around)and do what's good for the U.S. FIRST. You don't have to be a psychic to see what the global agenda has precipitated - look at the E.U. and their euro problem. They merged their currencies "for the betterment of all". Look at the world! All of this concern for global problems at the expense of our problems right here at home may sound altruistic and benevolent, but, for criminy sakes, look at the condition the world is in! Remember what your folks told you before you went away to college and got educated?, "charity begins at home." For my money you can have your global thinking experts, I'll take mom and pop!

Yeah, it would have been nice to know that Mr. Obama thought the "Constitution is fundamentally flawed because it only tells governments, state and federal, what it can't do to you. It doesn't say what it MUST do FOR you."
But we didn't get that news, did we?

I long for a "True Statesman" to once again, free America from the blender of politics, to stand tall, strong and proud, unashamedly declaring the greatness of this country. Mr. De Barrows is correct in that the "family" focus, the eye on our borders, our economy, our education, our infra-structure, our own huddled masses, must become our leaders motivation for service. I'm sick of America's left, wimpering, blubbering and begging forgiveness in honor of thier leader instead of standing up for the rights of it's own citizens. Palin simply says it like it is and I greatly respect her for it. I doubt we could find a truer American. As much as I admire her however, I haven't heard anything from her that tells me that she has a clue. I can tell you what's wrong, but that's just half the battle. I've waited this past year to hear her SAY Something, and I've been sorely disappointed.

Mr Murchison,
Well said, but the point I wish to make is the disparity between conservative candidate's vitas, and the progressive candidate's vitas.
It seems that ever since Tyler, it has been about sound bites and slogans.
It all matters about celebrity, not capability.
How often is it reportred that GWB had a higher gpa than algore?? But GWB is an ignoramus.
Remember the ad hominems against Reagan??
This field is tilted, and I call you on this point.
DID Sarah Palin have more experience as an Executive, as of 2008, than Barack Obama??
If So, then why your column?
Do YOU think has he learned anything in his two years of OJT as THE Executive??
Anything that would make YOU vote for him?
Anything that would make you persuade me to vote for him?
COULD you explain to me hiow his policy choices are good for this Republic?
If so, please enlighten me.
Respectfully, JS

Well PattyD; I hope you stick around enough to learn. I was able to tell on my first visit and so to were most of those here, I imagine. As for the rest of you whinners worrying about her creds or her so called reality show, all the reality shows in the world do not come within a continents breath of Sharah Palin coming within spitting distance of two grizly bears fighting. I feel sure they were protected by, someone off camera, with, at least, a Win300 Mag. Not someplace I'd want to be with my wife and kids, no matter what was protecting me from out of sight. She had more political savvy, in her little pinky, than Huessin Obama had in all his short political career of voting "present". He is just using his time as president to score vacations a normal man would have sense enough to stay away from when a war is going on. I bet he wouldn't give up anything for Ramadan or Lent or whatever religion he pretends to follow.

The rest of the story of of those pesky lawsuits is that they weren't lawsuits per se but claimed ethics violations that were able to be filed anonymously in Alaska and that they had already cost the Palins about 1/2 million dollars of their own money to defend. With no end in sight burning both time and cash, with a compromised ability to act as governor, Sarah Palin resigned. This is hardly "quitting." This is doing what you can do limit damage to your cause and family. It is a wonder to me that the law in Alaska allows those ethic complaints to be made anonymously, but that is probably thought to protect the "whistle blower." Obviously the law was abused and the law needs some modification. As I recall, the law requires public officals to pay for their own defense, but the investigations are paid for by the government, and each one must be investigated.
How about a Jindal-Palin ticket?
