Texas Deputy’s Life Matters

Any movement crosses a line when it starts advocating violence.

Deputy Darren Goforth was gunned down at a Harris County, Texas, gas station when he stopped to fill up his vehicle Friday evening. He was 47. The execution appeared unprovoked. Security footage shows the murderer, who is black, come up behind and shoot 15 rounds into Goforth, who is white. The suspect, Shannon J. Miles, made his first appearance in court Monday, but no definitive reason was given why he allegedly emptied his pistol into the sheriff’s deputy, other than an obvious intent to target law enforcement. Miles’ rap sheet includes charges ranging from disorderly conduct with a firearm to evading arrest to lying to police. Law enforcement, however, has a theory to why Miles did it. In a press conference over the weekend, Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman pinned the blame on this murder on the angry rhetoric surrounding the Black Lives Matter protests. “This rhetoric has gotten out of control,” he said. “We’ve heard ‘black lives matter,’ ‘all lives matter.’ Well, cops’ lives matter, too. So why don’t we just drop the qualifier and just say ‘lives matter’?” To be clear, the Black Lives Matter movement is one born out of the democratic form of government, and the First Amendment protects its message. But any movement crosses a line when it starts advocating violence.

Powerful reaction today from Harris County DA Devon Anderson and Sheriff Ron Hickman! They address the negative national rhetoric about police officers that’s invading social media following the “cold-blooded execution” of a HCSO deputy last night while he was getting gas for his patrol car. Watch their reaction here!
