When we talk about cities that are overrun with crime, drugs, and homeless encampments — where it’s unsafe to walk the streets after 6:00 p.m., business owners are constantly on high alert for theft, and residents know not to draw attention to themselves with jewelry or high-end clothing — many cities might come to mind, but immediately most of us think of San Francisco.

The sunny oceanside destination was once full of life, scenery, culture, and excitement. Businesses thrived from both local consumer and tourism activity, and it was a popular vacation hotspot for both families and those living the single life.

However, over the last decade, the home to the famous Golden Gate Bridge has plummeted into something of a third-world country. The area has become well known for high rates of drug activity, rampant and uncontrolled crime, and homeless tents lining most city blocks. Innocent people have accepted that the constant potential of being mugged, harmed, or worse is a normal part of life. Used needles, piles of human feces, and unconscious human beings are common findings along the streets, and residents and store owners often complain of the stench of urine permeating through the air.

Those who live in this area have been begging for years to have their city cleaned up and restored to the beautiful community it once was. They have voiced their concerns for their safety and well-being, simply wanting to go to work, attend school, or run errands without having to step over bodies or worry about being attacked or robbed in the process of daily living.

Yet their pleas for a crackdown on homeless camps, drugs, and crime and to clean up the streets have long been ignored, while these problems have only gotten significantly worse. Most of us have started to believe that we would never see a pristine version of the city ever again, wondering if it’s even possible to reverse so many years of neglect.

As it turns out, it is possible. It happened. And it happened in record time.

Just a few days ago, upon the announcement that Chinese dictator Xi Jinping would be visiting California — specifically the bay-area city — city workers and politicians quickly joined forces to sweep streets, pick up needles, wash away human excrement, find a place for the homeless population, and essentially turn around years of deterioration on every front almost overnight.

When questioned about the sudden action on turning around the landfill that San Francisco had become so quickly, Newsom responded: “Anytime you put on an event, by definition, you have people over to your house, you’re going to clean up the house. You’ve got 21 world leaders. You’ve got tens of thousands of people coming from all around the globe. What an opportunity to showcase the world’s most extraordinary place.”

“I know folks say, ‘Oh, they’re just cleaning up this place because all these fancy leaders are coming into town,’” he added. “That’s true because it’s true. But it’s also true for months and months and months prior to APEC, we’ve been having different conversations.”

Of that there is no doubt. They have known for a while that California would be hosting these top world leaders — it was just a matter of figuring out which city would need the emergency cleanup crew in order to give the global elite the false impression that their American Democrat allies are effective leaders who run a tidy ship.

However, considering the type of government that would preside over a country like China, those who are visiting San Francisco from other countries are no more under the impression that their far-left American colleagues care any more about the health and safety of their constituents than they do.

As demonstrated by Governor Newsom, the abominable conditions that the locals have been forced to live in for years are purely by choice. Their elected officials have the power, resources, and authority to create clean, safe spaces while regulating the crime, filth, and chaos that make their way into the area. They can make things happen quickly and efficiently, and they are capable of allocating the tax dollars of their base to wherever is necessary to provide the type of utopia that their supporters vote them in to establish.

When the city descends into total chaos and decay, it is because the political leaders of that area have actively chosen it.
