Wicked Actresses Go on Cringe Media Tour

The weirdness of the movie and its lead actresses will nonetheless appeal to a certain segment of moviegoers.

The highly anticipated film adaptation of “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande as “Glinda” and Cynthia Erivo as “Elphaba,” opened in theaters recently. As such, clips of a media tour with the two leading actresses, including several interviews with various outlets and clips of their high-profile appearances, took over social platforms.

“Wicked” has long been a beloved musical, written and produced as the prequel to the already iconic tale of The Wizard of Oz, which was first published in May 1900. The film version of that book came to life 39 years later. The story focuses on a young girl landing in Oz, meeting the good witch, Glinda, and being told that if she wants to get home and return to her Auntie Em and Uncle Henry’s farm, then she needs to follow the yellow brick road to the castle of the Wicked Witch of the West, defeat her, and meet the Wizard himself, who will fly her home in his hot air balloon.

Throughout the story, we meet the munchkins of Munchkin Land, a lion with no courage, a scarecrow with no brain, and a tinman with no heart, as well as other unrealistic characters scattered throughout the story. While the themes of the feature have been debated over the years as possibly having political undertones or messages linked to deeper issues, none have suggested that the true nature of the Emerald City was to promote gay, lesbian, and queer pride, nor that the chickens in the film were actually gay.

Until now.

The Independent reported on a conversation the main two actresses had with The Gay Times: “Ahead of the premiere, Grande and Erivo discussed the inherent queerness of both Wicked and the world of OZ created by author L. Frank Baum. ‘Every day in the Emerald City is a Pride parade, right?’ the 31-year-old [Grande] said. ‘Even, like, the chickens. Those chickens are gay.’”

I think it’s safe to say that Mr. Baum would be the first to be surprised at the news of Oz’s chickens having questions about their sexuality. But leave it to those infected by the woke mind virus to infuse messages of pride and queerness into every nook and cranny these days. In the same interview, “Grande even went on to suggest that Shiz University’s goat professor, Dr. Dillamond, played by Peter Dinklage, is a ‘gay icon.’”

The cringeworthy takes on this popular production didn’t end there. One particular moment between the duo went viral after Erivo became emotional in response to a strange comment made by “Out” reporter Tracy Gilchrist, as she informed the Elphaba actress that people were “holding space” with the lyrics of “Defying Gravity.”

In Gilchrist’s own words, “I’ve seen this week, people are taking the lyrics of ‘Defying Gravity’ and really holding space with that, and feeling power in that.”

Acting as if she had just been told she had cured childhood cancer, Erivo responded, “That’s really powerful. … That’s what I wanted.” Grande demonstrated the now widely memed gesture of holding her costar’s finger in support.

Instead of delving into the confusing idea of what it means to “hold space” for the song’s lyrics, the pair’s eyes welled up with tears. This added to the long list of instances when the two cannot hold back their emotions while discussing the film. They seem to believe this is a historic and life-changing work of art, which many will hold space for in the future.

As for the reception of this film, some simply won’t support it, preferring instead to send a message for Hollywood to stop infusing woke ideas into every storyline, even when it’s especially irrelevant. However, while the boycotts of other films have led to box-office bombs as audiences have refused to support the far-Left activism of the main performers — the Wicked movie is one that will likely survive and succeed due to carrying an already dedicated audience, and thus escaping what may have been a catastrophe for their profits by forcing us to deal with another set of psychotic lead actors.
