FDA Bans Red Dye No. 3
It’s almost like Team Biden wants a little credit for what Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to do.
Many moms across America feel vindicated today, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just banned the use of Red Dye No. 3 in foods.
This dye is commonly used to make foods appear more palatable and attractive to consumers. However, like so many other food dyes, Red 3 can adversely affect people’s health. In fact, Red 3 is known to cause cancer and has been banned from cosmetics for 35 years as a result. The ban “was a long time coming,” according to Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor at NYU. “There needs to be a consistency between what we put on our skin and what we put into our mouths.”
The fact that it was taken out of cosmetics while consumers were ingesting it is rather frightening. It’s also worth noting that Red 3 is severely restricted or banned entirely in other countries, including Australia, Canada, Japan, and the European Union.
The timing of the ban is rather interesting. President-elect Donald Trump is set to take office on Monday, and it seems like the Biden FDA is trying to get credit for what Trump will accomplish these next few years. Part of his incoming cabinet will likely include Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as head of the Department of Health and Human Services. While RFK’s stance on abortion is troubling, his championing of healthy living has brought many otherwise anti-Trump moms to the MAGA camp. Kennedy has declared a new movement — Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) — that has gotten concerned mothers everywhere very upbeat.
Synthetic chemical food dyes have been observed to cause behavioral issues in children, though Red 40 has been the main culprit for some of the more severe reactions.
Red 3’s expiration date in food is January 2027, and for drugs and medicine, January 2028. This ban affects roughly 3,000 different foods. Red 3 is also very commonly used to color cough syrups and gummy vitamins. Some of these highly recognizable red dye-enhanced items include Skittles, Starbursts, M&M’s, Trix, Lucky Charms, Fruit Loops, maraschino cherries, and acetaminophen.
If RFK is confirmed to the helm of HHS, here are some other dyes that are hopefully on the chopping block: Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Blue 1.
The FDA has taken a step in the right direction. Americans are struggling with preventable illnesses and obesity, and a big part of the problem is a tainted food supply. Sugar is in almost everything we eat. Processed food is convenient but slowly killing us. Chemical additives introduced to our food supply actively make our food less nutritious. They also mess with our mental and behavioral state. It’s long past time for these concerns to be addressed.
Americans are sick and tired of being sick and tired.
