Make Washington for the People Again

Donald Trump aims to change Washington, DC, from the oppressive bureaucratic state it has become.

It’s a big job — indeed, one might call it “yuge” — but Donald Trump is bound and determined to see it through. In his continued quest to make America great again, Trump has returned to office with a clearer perspective on the myriad of problems besetting Washington. More importantly, he has a strategic plan for directly addressing the things that have turned the nation’s government into more of a leftist good ol’ boys club than a representative republic.

In just two weeks, Trump has boldly and aggressively challenged The Swamp’s administrative state. He has identified and targeted two big issues: wasteful spending and DEI. His goal with both is simple — he wants to eliminate them entirely.

For the first time in a long time, a president has made it his mission to fundamentally reform Washington and restore the federal government to its original purpose: serving the best interests of the American people.

It’s a culture change as much as it is a policy shift.

For far too long, bureaucrats in Washington have seen themselves as lording over the American public with a distant attitude of superiority. People were attracted to jobs in Washington with grand ideas and ambitions to use the levers of power to change the world. Service to the American public was often the least of their motives. Too often, Washington elites view the rest of the country as a bunch of dull and backward rubes who need more to be directed and forced toward “progress” rather than capable people to be served and prioritized.

Also, Washington’s culture is corrupt. If one can get a government job, one is in a secure position, and the chances of losing one’s employment, position, and benefits are much less likely.

To be fair, many individuals in government put in long hours, work hard, and seek to do the best job they can. Yet, even in these instances, there remains an elitist culture within the Beltway. Furthermore, the predominant attitude is one of increasing the size and scope of the federal government, not limiting or, God forbid, actually decreasing it to regain constitutional parameters.

Trump’s actions in firing a number of department and agency inspectors general, along with his ordering the shuttering of all DEI offices and programs across the federal government, are directly tied to his aim of fundamentally changing the culture in and around the District of Columbia. Federal jobs should be held by the best people, and there should be fewer of them.

Trump has moved so fast and decisively that much of the Washington bureaucratic class is spinning and wondering what hit them. While some have responded with threats of lawsuits and resistance, Trump has not backed down but instead has continued to press the issue. Indeed, he has welcomed the lawsuits, as he sees this as a winning opportunity for him more than a setback.

To affect lasting change across the country, Donald Trump has to start with Washington.
