Someone once said that there are only three certainties in life: death, taxes, and the Left’s hatred of America.

Actually, I’m not sure anyone’s ever said that until just now. But why not? The first two items have proven themselves over the centuries, and the last item has become such a staple of American life that it now merits little more than a shoulder shrug.

Take, for example, a new Gallup poll, just in time for the Independence Day holiday. Its headline tells us that American pride has slipped to a new low. A new low? Wasn’t the old low low enough?

“Pride among Democrats tumbles,” the Gallup subhead reads, “while independents also hit new low, more than offsetting increase among Republicans.”

Digging into the data of this survey, which has been taken annually since 2001, we find that 58% of respondents are “extremely” (41%) or “very” (17%) proud to be American. That’s down 9% from last year — last year, when a near-catatonic Joe Biden was auto-penning his way through the presidency and America was getting sand kicked in its face by China, Russia, Iran, the European Union, and every south-of-the-border country that emptied its prisons and its mental institutions and sent its dregs northward. Furthermore, that 58% number is down 5% from the previous record low, which was registered in 2020.

Weird, huh? Last year, we were the unmitigated laughingstock of the world, and our nation was in the throes of the worst and most embarrassing presidency in American history. And yet this year — this restorative year — we hit a record low in American pride.

How are we to explain this? Two words: Trump and Democrats.

As Gallup reports: “Democrats are mostly responsible for the drop in U.S. pride this year, with 36% saying they are extremely or very proud, down from 62% a year ago. This is only the second time Democrats’ pride has fallen below the majority level, along with a 42% reading in 2020, the last year of the first Trump administration. That poll was conducted during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and shortly after the murder [sic] of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers.”

Thus, the return to the Oval Office of Donald Trump — the man whom both Saudi princes and Israeli prime ministers are now hailing, the man who recently registered a record-high job-approval number, the man who last week enjoyed a series of events and outcomes that are perhaps unrivaled in the 249-year history of our nation — has caused the Democrats’ pride in our nation to tank.

Who knew that the restoration of American prestige around the globe could be such a downer for those on the Left?

Frankly, everyone knew. Democrat disdain for America is nothing new, even if it’s reached new, er, heights under Donald Trump. Here at The Patriot Post, we’ve been covering this terrain for quite some time.

Going back even further, we all remember the self-directed fear and loathing immediately after 9/11, after that murderous jihadist attack on our nation. “We had it coming” was a common refrain on the Left. So was, “This is a case of the chickens coming home to roost.”

Of those and other slurs, author Daniel Flynn, who in 2002 literally wrote the book on the Left’s hatred of America, had this to say:

Such misguided statements weren’t uttered in Tehran or Baghdad but in American college towns with more familiar-sounding names — Madison, Morgantown, and Boulder. As the rest of America came together in the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks, some on campus exploited the tragedy to bash the United States and attribute the cause of the attacks to old grudges. Patriotic students and faculty were punished, and pro-America speech was stifled.

Indeed, like the scorpion that stings the frog, blaming America is a reflexive act on the Left. It’s what they do.

As for those of us on the Right, it’s perhaps predictable that our patriotic quotient would be sky-high under Trump. But more telling is how our patriotism holds up even during the worst of times for our nation. As Gallup points out: “Republicans’ level of national pride has been much steadier, typically registering above 90%, including 92% this year, up from 85% in 2024. The only years in which fewer than nine in 10 Republicans were proud were 2016 and 2020 through 2024. All but 2020 were when a Democratic president was in office.” (If you’re keeping score at home, that 56-point chasm between the Democrats and the Republicans is the greatest gap since Gallup began its polling on this topic.)

So there you have it. When it comes to hating America, Democrats seem intent on proving that their loathing knows no bounds — that, yes, you actually can fall off the floor. Republicans, on the other hand, will no doubt speak out when they think their country has lost its way — but they love her just the same, come hell or high water, come Obama or Biden.

And that’s just as it should be.
