The horrific shooting of two National Guard members right before Thanksgiving was the final straw for Donald Trump and the American people. The attack was carried out by an Afghan immigrant who escaped from the resurgent Taliban under Joe Biden’s failed withdrawal.

Given that this act of terror came on the heels of a massive Somali fraud scandal in Minnesota, President Trump concluded that a crackdown was in order for those who have come to the U.S. but are unwilling to assimilate.

On Thanksgiving, Trump published a very long post on X in which he not only calls out Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Somalia) but also explains how he intends to fix the immigration problem.

America is dealing with not only millions of illegal aliens but also refugees. What Trump wants to do is end legal immigration from “third-world countries,” deport those who eschew our heritage and refuse to assimilate, denaturalize immigrants who disturb the peace, and deport foreign nationals who are criminals.

One may be tempted to think that Trump went too far, particularly with calling Minnesota’s governor “seriously retarded.” However, it’s the federal government’s job to step in when states fail to protect their citizens and allow themselves to be defrauded of over $1 billion.

Governor Walz is facing heavy scrutiny and even calls for a federal investigation for enabling the fraud. One group of Minnesota Department of Human Services employees posted a long letter on social media, indicting Walz and implying that he was actually running interference for those committing the fraud and silencing those blowing the whistle.

For his part, Walz only takes responsibility for the fraudsters’ arrest. The rest he blames on Trump — even though the fraud predates Trump’s second term.

The other Minnesota politician to come under fire, Somali refugee Ilhan Omar, is a prime example of the kind of mendacious stuff that happens among many Somali immigrants. Omar has long been rumored to have married her brother to skirt immigration law and remain in the U.S. She also hates American ideals and has openly stated that her loyalty is to Somalia. Omar and those like her should face denaturalization and deportation.

As for the other policy proposals Trump mentioned, what would those look like on a practical level? The first step would be singling out prospective Americans and vetting them thoroughly. This would weed out many of the troublemakers, though it wouldn’t necessarily have flagged last week’s assailant, as he worked with the CIA in Afghanistan. Ergo, there needs to be something more.

“A more rational approach,” opine the editors of National Review, “would be to end illegal immigration (which Trump has made strides toward doing) and weight the legal system much more toward selecting for merit — education levels, work skills, English proficiency, and other qualities that suggest an immigrant would assimilate and succeed here quickly.”

We want immigrants who have a decent chance at speedy assimilation and finding success so that they aren’t a burden on taxpayers. These qualifications seem to be a good place to start.

That said, how do you vet for those who lie? Well, the reality is that you can’t catch every single individual who lies his way to permanent residency or citizenship. However, there must be an easy way to deport or denaturalize non-native Americans if they display treasonous behavior or are eventually caught lying.

President Trump didn’t call out Dearborn, Michigan, but that city is another example of a community that has refused to assimilate into American culture. Instead, it’s home to thousands from countries that hate America.

We have allowed the barbarians to breach the walls, and they are destroying communities, cities, and even states. Reform is desperately needed because we have already seen the terrible fruits of indiscriminate immigration in Europe. Let’s hope President Donald Trump is serious and successful in his policy proposals; they would go a long way toward getting our country back on track.
