Arguably, the best thing to have come out of the U.S. helping to host the FIFA World Cup is all the tourists getting to see the real America firsthand and falling in love with it. It’s a modern retelling of Alexis de Tocqueville’s experience in the early days of our country.

“Freddy,” an anonymous German tourist whose social media account on X was one of the most viral, came stateside for the World Cup and has documented his all-American road trip. On his journey through the southern U.S., he experienced Waffle House at 1 o'clock in the morning, ate a Buc-ee’s brisket sandwich on top of deer feed, went to a country music concert featuring Ella Langley, visited NASA’s Space Center in Texas, and so much more.

Freddy charmed us all with his discoveries, which most Americans take for granted. He was also among the first World Cup tourists to express their love and appreciation for the United States and its people. Unfortunately, though, as much as Freddy got to experience American greatness, he also got to experience toxic cancel culture thanks to America-hating leftist trolls sitting in their mothers’ basements with nothing better to do than stew in their misery.

The grouches and ne'er-do-wells of X decided to cancel Freddy. They insisted that he was an elaborate propaganda scheme put out by the Right to jazz up the America 250 love before the July 4th celebrations.

With the glee of middle school mean girls, they started digging through his X profile history and thought they struck gold with this first nugget: Freddy had been to the United States before. In fact, he lived in Santa Barbara, California, for a year.

Freddy never claimed this was his first visit, though many assumed it was. Regardless, he had only been to the enclaves of the coastal elite during his previous visits, and this road trip was his first experience of “real America,” as he explained.

Of course, the trolls weren’t done. Their first “revelation” didn’t really land, so they went digging for something controversial in his past. And by golly, they found something that was worthy of leftist pearl-clutching — i.e. a commonsense observation about hypocrisy.

Back in 2023, Freddy, who is white, dared to comment about the use of the N-word at rap concerts. “I was at some concerts in the USA, and no one gave a d**n about it,” he said. “It’s just the song lyrics. In rap songs, the lyrics are 50% made up of that word. Then you practically aren’t allowed to sing along anymore.”

Find me the lie. Back during the era of peak cancel culture, a white teen boy lost his opportunity to attend his dream college because he posted a video of himself singing a rap song, N-word and all. So for leftists, this factually correct observation is blasphemy. For the rest of us, their pearl-clutching is stupidity clothed in the garments of virtue signaling.

The other “controversial” comment Freddy made was declaring that racism isn’t merely the sin of white people against every other race. He wrote: “Racism can be directed toward any racial or ethnic group. And whites are definitely a racial group.” The horror.

I suppose as a German who has been well instructed on the terrible racism of his own country’s Nazi Party toward Jews and other ethnic minorities, that comment may have been more controversial in Europe. For the rest of us, though, it was just common sense.

Freddy was so hounded by Internet trolls that he decided to deactivate his X account. He did, however, continue posting about his journey on Instagram, which for him was a more positive social media landscape to document his road trip in peace.

Freddy got to experience the best and the worst of American culture. Sadly, it drove him from a large social media platform.

For the other World Cup tourists, we hope that their love of America isn’t being stifled by the self-hating leftists and that they enjoyed the 4th of July — especially if they are Brits.
