Barack Obama is facing a big challenge getting congressional support for his desired attack on Syria, “We’re not counting for the conference, but some of us are keeping tallies, and it’s looking horrible,” says one GOP source. “I’d say 30 to 40 Republicans, at most, are privately supportive.”

The count is looking so bad for the president, in fact, that Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who favor action in Syria, are working to boost GOP support, even going so far as to advise Obama on how to win Republican votes. Establishment Republicans have enough trouble with grassroots conservatives – this will only add to it.
