Barack Obama relented Thursday and will allow states to pick up the tab for reopening some national parks such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Zion. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, however, said that while states can pay for it, the feds will maintain control and won’t reimburse the cost of reopening them. Utah estimates it will cost $50,000 per day to operate Zion National Park, but that it’s too important for the communities surrounding the parks to ignore.
