With the box office hit “Captain Phillips” in mind, cargo ships off the east coast of Africa have discovered a new deterrent to pirates. Turns out that broadcasting Britney Spears “music” over loudspeakers is so offensive to Muslim pirates that they avoid boarding the ships blaring such music. One British security advisor noted, “Playing loud pop songs has been proven as one of the most effective ways of fending off attackers. As a tool against pirates, it is pretty effective.” Unfortunately, this also proves that we have something in common with Somali pirates!
