Here’s a spooky statistic for you: According to The Washington Free Beacon, “More than 8,000 federal workers and contractors with security clearances owe $85 million in unpaid taxes to the IRS, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).” Here’s the kicker: That number’s bad enough, but it only includes DHS, DOE and State Dep’t employees and excludes intelligence and Defense Dep’t staff. One employee allegedly owes Uncle Sam nearly $2 million. The GAO notes that “Federal law does not expressly prohibit an individual with unpaid federal taxes from being granted a security clearance,” but don’t expect to get away with unpaid taxes if you’re a Tea Party “terrorist.”
