House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) documented his nauseating experience last week when trying to enroll through D.C.‘s ObamaCare exchange. After many failed attempts and a phone call to the DC Health Link help line, the speaker finally received enrollment confirmation hours later. “So here’s the bottom line,” a spokesperson explained. “Before Obamacare, through the program for all federal employees the Boehners’ monthly premiums totaled $433 with a $700 deductible. Now, the Boehners will pay around $800 per month, with deductibles somewhere near $2000.” Boehner’s office acknowledged that “the speaker and Mrs. Boehner are fortunate enough to be able to afford these higher costs,” but these premium hikes – even among lawmakers – helps explain why Congress was so insistent on keeping their generous health insurance subsidies.
