Tensions between Japan and China continue to escalate following China’s provocative move to implement an “air defense identification zone” over disputed islands in the East China Sea. So, naturally, Barack Obama sent our best and brightest to Beijing to soften the situation (or inflame it). This quarrel isn’t the only issue at play for Joe Biden, as The Wall Street Journal’s Gerard Baker notes: “[T]he U.S. has privately told South Korea that its new plan to use Chinese telecom firm Huawei could lead to communication lines becoming less secure. Remember: the Pentagon has accused China of hacking American computer networks. Meanwhile, we find that China’s efforts to gain influence in the world economy might be paying off: The yuan recently overtook the euro and the yen to become the second-most used currency in trade finance after the dollar.”
